Forskare bland personal och elever : Forskningssamarbete om språk- och identitetsutvecklilng på en flerspråkig skola

- Den här boken visar hur rektor, lärare och forskare i samverkan kan påverka attityder och föreställningar om språkliga resurser så att det leder till långsiktiga förändringar i skolverksamheten. Flera röster från intervjuer, inspelningar och skrivna texter som samlats i ett forskningsprojekt lyfts fram i boken som också innehåller forskarnas funderingar om att bedriva tvärvetenskaplig forskning i samarbete med personal och elever.Forskningen genomfördes på en F–6 skola med elever som till stor del har ett annat förstaspråk än svenska. Syftet med projektet var att studera och utveckla en undervisningsmiljö med särskild tonvikt på elevernas språk- och identitetsutveckling. Det fick det långa projektnamnet Interaktion för språk- och identitetsutveckling i flerspråkiga klassrum och finansierades i tre år av Nämnden för lärarutbildning vid Linnéuniversitetet.Forskare från tre discipliner: språkvetenskap, litteraturvetenskap och pedagogik arbetade i projektet både inom sitt eget vetenskapliga område och i samarbete med varandra. Projektet ledde till ett antal forskningspublikationer och presentationer på vetenskapliga konferenser, vilket beskrivs kortfattat i sista delen av boken. Merparten av boken rymmer i stället det samarbete som genererades på skolan och som berikade både skolverksamheten och forskningen.Boken vänder sig till alla som intresserar sig för skolutveckling – såväl skolledare och verksamma lärare som lärarstudenter, lärarutbildare och forskare.

- Individual voice and speech characteristics are important for earwitness identification. A target-absent line-up with six foils was used to analyse the influence of voice andspeech features on recognition. To create ecologically valid conditions for voice recognition,the present study used voices in conversation in the target event and for the foils.The participants were particularly successful in rejecting the two voice foils that weremost dissimilar to the target voice in articulation rate and pitch. These two foils werealso given somewhat higher confidence judgments than the other foils, although the levelof that confidence was still somewhat low. In fact, participants as a collective wereunderconfident for these two foils but were overconfident for the other foils. In addition,they showed somewhat better ability in their confidence judgments to distinguish correctand incorrect responses for the two most dissimilar foils than for the four foils for whichtheir identification responses were less successful. For the other four foils, which weremore similar to the target voice, the participants showed in their confidence judgmentsvery poor ability to distinguish between correct and incorrect identifications. Laterpositions in the parade were more often (erroneously) identified as the culprit, regardlessof the specific foils used in those positions.

- According to Tulving and Thomson (1973), similarity in encoding and recall contexts will facilitate recall. We investigated if similarity between the original voice event and the voice lineup helps people to identify the target from a voice lineup and helps improve the realism in participants’ confidence judgments of the identification reports. Participants (n = 199) tried to identify a voice heard in a dialogue context that simulated two males, 22 and 27 years old, planning a burglary. In the Text-lineup condition six male speakers read a text from a book and in the Dialogue-lineup condition the same speakers had a dialogue with another male speaker. Each recording lasted approximately 30 seconds. The Text-lineup condition showed better identification accuracy, lower overconfidence and better calibration compared with the Dialoguelineup condition. These results deviate from Tulving and Thomson’s encoding specificity principle in memory psychology, maybe because text reading provides more useful voice features compared to dialogues.

- Swedish has – like other Germanic languages – flexible stress placement, which underlies morphological rules and is also based on the individual word’s origin. The achievement of the correct usage when learning Swedish is challenging. As second language learners of Swedish in the classrooms present speakers of a variety of first languages (L1s), the opportunity has been taken to have a closer look on how stress in L2 is handled. For that reason, learners with Somali, Albanian, Vietnamese and Farsi as their first language were recorded when speaking L2-Swedish. These languages exemplify a variety of systems in regard to the usage of stress. The recorded speech was analysed and the observed way of administering stress in L2 was compared to the organisation of stress in L1.

- Based on observations of the rhythmic structure of L2-speech produced by L1-speakers of Albanian – which suggest the occurrence of transfer – a study is presented here that compares durational aspects between the two languages. In order to do this, speech read by Swedish and Albanian L1-speakers was recorded and investigated, and normalized durational factors were analysed. The results, however, do not support the assumption that there is variation in the rhythmic structure between the two languages. According to the results, transfer cannot explain previous observations.
