- This article analyzes strategies and practices among Swedish Humanities scholars in relation to the demands of “internationalization” and in a framework of academic capitalism. The article is based on 30 qualitative interviews with scholars in philosophy, Romance languages and history. There are signs of cognitive dissonance, with conflicting set of norms. Benefits for the academic CV, along with a discipline’s ideals, traditions and its perceived role in society are the main context in which internationalization is understood, implemented and contested, with individual variations in international practices as e.g. international mobility, networking or publication strategies.

- This chapter explores what happens when well-educated, highly skilled professionals leave their country of origin to work abroad to make use of their skills and competences in another organizational framework and cultural context. Do they experience any limits regarding the acknowledgement of their seemingly transnational competences and diplomas? What kind of obstacles do they meet and what are their strategies for reestablishing professionalism and status in a new setting? We present the results from our ethnographic study “Polish Doctors in Swedish Medical Care” as a point of departure for a Bourdieu-inspired discussion on negotiations regarding symbolic capital in another national medical field (cf. Bourdieu 1984, 1988) and the conditions and limitations of transnational mobility of symbolic capital.

- Mattering as a central part of well-being has not been studied in the context of newly arrived young migrants in Swedish schools. Neither have studies on mattering included material and spatial conditions. This article draws on data collected from ethnographic fieldwork to address this. The theoretical contribution is based on the combination of the concept of mattering with Ahmed’s feminist and postcolonial theory of orientation and a critical view of lived experience as social and bodily orientation devices. Combining these theoretical frameworks, we explore social, spatial and material conditions for mattering in newly arrived youths’ everyday school lives. The overall outcome of our analysis illustrates that mattering is not only a question of social relations but also related to spatial and material dimensions. A conclusion is that Swedishness as an unspoken norm of whiteness is ‘built into the walls’ of Swedish schools and that (in)directly discriminates newly arrived young migrants.
