  • How does Modernity Taste? Tomatoes in the Societal Change from Modernity to Late Modernity
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Culture Unbound. Journal of Current Cultural Research. - : Linkoping University Electronic Press. - 2000-1525. ; 3, s. 439-454
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this article is to discuss how changes in tomato food regulation, production and consumption, can be seen as part of a broader societal change from Modernity to Late Modernity. Based on evidence from the Swedish and European food systems we demonstrate how a system, which has been successfully managing development in food production for several decades by stressing rationality, homogeneity and standardization, is being challenged by a system that has adapted to, and also exploited, consumer preferences such as heterogeneity, diversity and authenticity. The article shows how tomato growers develop differentiation strategies, adapting to and cultivating this new consumer interest, and how authorities responsible for regulations of trade and quality struggle to adapt to the new situation. As the products become more diversified, taste becomes an important issue and is associated with a view that traditional and natural are superior to standardized and homogeneous products. The analytical approaches for the discussion come from two study areas: ethnological, and marketing and policy perspective, thus showing a multidimensional picture of a changing food system.

  • Fridge stories and other tales from the kitchen : A methodological toolbox for getting closer to everyday food practices
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Food, Culture, and Society. - : Routledge. - 1552-8014 .- 1751-7443. ; 23:5, s. 608-626
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we present a methodological toolbox as a useful research approach for investigating domestic food practices. Consumption research often relies strongly on interviews or surveys. While helpful, such methods inevitably create a distance between the verbalization of the studied practice and the practice itself, inviting post hoc rationalization. The toolbox helps the researcher to get closer to the studied practice by combining interviews with methods based on observation, visualization and verbalization, in or close to practice. The toolbox holds a variety of methods and we describe fridge stories, food mapping, shop-alongs and food diaries. Through a practical discussion of the advantages and difficulties of these methods, and their combined use, we hope our paper can be useful to other researchers and students interested in everyday food practices.

  • A Narrative Review of Ecomuseum Literature: Suggesting a Thematic Classification and Identifying Sustainability as a Core Element
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of the Inclusive Museum. - 1835-2014. ; 7, s. 15-29
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ecomuseology has become an important transdisciplinary field, but until now there is no overview of the existing scholarly literature. In this review we analyzed scholarly articles on ecomuseums thematically with the aim to provide a comprehensive knowledge base for future research and to distill a common denominator for ecomuseum research. Using pre-defined inclusion criteria we identified 61 articles and a comparative thematic analysis revealed the following six themes: “concepts and theories”, “landscape”, “culture and anthropology”, “development”, “management”, and “evaluation”. Though represented in varied thematic expressions, sustainability emerged as a core element in ecomuseology. This demonstrates that sustainability is an implicit and coherent element in ecomuseology. Most of the literature was conceptual, but a few studies included empirical material. Several themes hold potential for future transdisciplinary research as well as for collaboration with museum and community practitioners. The field has the potential to contribute to the larger field of sustainable community development.

  • Freshwater Fishing Strategies in Early Modern Sami Households
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Arctic Anthropology. - : University of Wisconsin Press. - 0066-6939 .- 1933-8139. ; 57, s. 197-211
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fish were absolutely necessary for survival for many households in preindustrial societies. Because fishing waters are considered a common-pool resource, it is difficult to exclude users, and the catch is subtractable. To learn what strategies were in place to avoid fish-stock depletion and secure continuous harvests, we investigated how Indigenous Sami households in Lule lappmark, Sweden, used low-productive freshwaters between 1660 and 1780. Our aim is to show how they conducted fishing and how it was linked to rules for fishing. Our sources are contemporary 17th- and 18th-century accounts and local court rulings. Rules for fishing were developed in a self-governance context. Users and fishing areas were well defined, and users often had exclusive rights to fish. Inheritance was important but not a sufficient prerequisite to obtain access. Our research covers a period during which abundant but low-yield fishing waters per household declined, making it more difficult to survive.

  • An Exotic Tree in a Foreign Country : A Cultural Biography of the Lodgepole Pine in Sweden
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Environment and History. - : Liverpool University Press. - 1752-7023 .- 0967-3407. ; 30:3, s. 483-506
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The movement of plants, animals, and microorganisms by humans, consciously or unconsciously, has changed both ecosystems and societies throughout history. This article focuses on one such transformative species, lodgepole pine, and its relocation from northwestern America to northern Sweden in the mid-twentieth century. A cultural biography of the lodgepole pine’s existence in Sweden examines how this tree has been linked to different value regimes, which creates a historical pattern. Through so-called ‘thinning processes’, powerful actors, in both production forestry and the environmental movement, have tried to reduce the importance of the species to a limited meaning and context. At the same time, more arguments, knowledge and changed contexts have made the lodgepole pine a ‘thick thing’, with superimposed values and meanings. Although the tree has moved far geographically, from one continent to another, its importance has continued to be framed by interacting international, national and local perspectives. The lodgepole pine, however, is not just an inert thing that is determined by cultural discourses. It is a living tree, with its own ability to act and whose life in a foreign land has created a dynamic that crosses the border between nature and culture.

  • "But how true that is, I do not know": the influence of written sources on the medicinal use of fungi across the western borderlands of the former Soviet Union
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: IMA fungus. - 2210-6340 .- 2210-6359. ; 15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Fungi have been used for medicinal purposes for many centuries. This study, based on 35 historical written sources and 581 in-depth semi-structured interviews from eight countries in the western borderlands of the former Soviet Union, investigates the medicinal use of fungi by local communities. We compared the taxa and uses obtained from fieldwork and historical sources with works that advocated fungi use within Soviet herbals, representing the centralised medical system. During fieldwork, we identified eight locally used fungi and one lichen. The highest numbers of medicinal uses were documented in Russia, Estonia and Ukraine. Studies published before the Soviet era listed 21 fungal taxa and one lichen species used in the study region. However, only six of these taxa were mentioned as used by people in our field studies (Amanitamuscaria, Boletusedulis, Lycoperdon, Morchella, Phallusimpudicus and Cetrariaislandica). Notably, these same six taxa were consistently endorsed in Soviet herbals. Of the remaining three taxa recorded in the fieldwork, none were mentioned in historical written sources. However, they were promoted either in Soviet herbals (Inonotusobliquus, Kombucha) or later popular publications (Cantharelluscibarius). This highlights the significant influence of written sources on the use of fungi for medicinal purposes within the studied local communities.
