  • Engineering Terrorismmindedness: A Scientometric Study of the 9/11-effect on STEM Research, 1989-2022
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Digital Humanities in the Nordic and Baltic Countries Publications. - 2704-1441. ; 5:1, s. 188-202, s. 188-202
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study terrorism’s shaping of STEM research through the development within engineer-ing research of a ‘terrorismmindedness’, i.e. terrorist threat domestication through integra-tion in research practice. This is done by a distant reading of how research in the engineer-ing sciences is increasingly addressing terrorism-related topics. By means of an in-depth bibliometric analysis of some 3.000 terrorism-related scientific articles published 1989–2022, we construct within the subject area ‘Engineering’ in Web of Science its research subfield ‘Terrorism Related Engineering Research’. The publications are analysed by bib-liometric mapping, co-occurrence text measures and ‘algorithmic historiography’ using the HistCite tool. Papers cited together are mapped using VOSviewer to identify concepts and the results are clustered according to topicality, revealing the various terrorism-related re-search interests among engineering scientists.

  • Andelivets agitator : J A Eklund, kristendomen och kulturen
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this thesis is to study the formation of opinions in issues related to the problem area of Christianity and culture of Public Theologian J A Eklund (1863-1945). The concept of Public Theologian refers to a theologian, who by participating in the cultural debate, strives to convince the public that Christianity is a superior theory of life even in modern society, and of Christianity’s relevance in every area of society. The thesis demonstrates that the issue of the relationship between Christianity and culture is visible throughout most of Eklund’s rich and multifaceted authorship, and can be said to pose a life long problem for him. Many other theologians in his time were also engaged in the issue of Christianity and culture. It was a problem characteristic of the generation. For more than thirty years Spiritual Life (Geistesleben, in german) was Eklund’s ideological signature. To him the concept carries humanistic, idealistic and Christian implications. Spiritual life is a denotation for the superior, free human life as opposed to nature, guided by laws and/or instincts. At times Eklund constrains the concept and gives it a more distinct religious meaning as he, for example, speaks of spiritual life in terms of “human life from above”. One must not thereby be led to believe that Eklund limits spiritual life to the sphere of the church; rather, in contrast he stresses that spiritual life also applies to science and learning, art and literature, customs and traditions, working life etc. Eklund’s use of the concept is highly connected to his interest in the problems pertaining to Christianity and culture. The title of this thesis – Agitator of the Spiritual Life – is explained by Eklund perceiving himself as a cross between a priest and an agitator. It is characteristic to his often unconventional approach and actions in his functions as priest and bishop that he perceived himself as an agitator, a political character who in his time was commonly referred to as the demagogue. The combination of a vehement temper, frequent controversial initiatives and an intensive will to take part in the cultural struggle earned him the name “the polemical Bishop of Karlstad”. The character of Eklund’s public theology, its agitating and often highly polemical mark, has to be put in relation to the intensive debates of the late 19:th century and the early 20:the century, between proponents of different theories of life. The issue of Christianity’s relationship to culture is treated as a group of problems in the thesis. Based on the occurrence of distinct themes in Eklund’s bibliography, a number of sub-problems have been identified. The thesis discusses Eklund’s view of the relationship between: 1) Christianity and science 2) Christianity and humanities 3) Christianity and philosophy 4) Christianity and fiction 5) Christianity and politics/state 6) Christianity and nationalism/ethnicity 7) Christianity and history. Finally it discusses Eklund’s view of Christianity’s standpoint in the issue of war and peace.

  • The happiness turn? : Mapping the emergence of "happiness studies" using cited references
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Scientometrics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0138-9130 .- 1588-2861. ; 103:2, s. 615-630
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article analyzes "happiness studies" as an emerging field of inquiry throughout various scientific disciplines and research areas. Utilizing four operationalized search terms in the Web of Science; "happiness", "subjective well-being", "life satisfaction" and "positive affect", a dataset was created for empirical citation analysis. Combined with qualitative interpretations of the publications, our results show how happiness studies has developed over time, in what journals the citing papers have been published, and which authors and researchers are the most productive within this set. We also trace various trends in happiness studies, such as the social indicators movement, the introduction of positive psychology and various medical and clinical applications of happiness studies. We conclude that "happiness studies" has emerged in many different disciplinary contexts and progressively been integrated and standardized. Moreover, beginning at the turn of the millennium, happiness studies has even begun to shape an autonomous field of inquiry, in which happiness becomes a key research problem for itself. Thus, rather than speaking of a distinct "happiness turn", our study shows that there have been many heterogeneous turns to happiness, departing in a number of different disciplines.

  • Normaliseringens uppkomst och tidiga utveckling i Sverige
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Handicaphistorisk Tidsskrift. - : Historisk Selskab for Handicap og Samfund. - 1399-4786. ; 28, s. 73-100
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • THE ORIGIN AND EARLY DEVELOPMENT OF NORMALISATION IN SWEDEN. Normalisation can be seen as a key concept, both in disability research and in special education. In Sweden so far, the origin of this basic approach is connected to the time period after World War II. The purpose of this paper is to nuance this perspective. The existing Swedish historiography on normalisation, to some extent written by protagonists of the concept, will be discussed. We agree on the full effectiveness of normalisation based on a reform-oriented social policy from the 1960s. However, by means of historical research and based on hermeneutic methods, this study aims to demonstrate the concept’s origin and early development in Sweden already some decades before. For that purpose historical sources from contemporary Swedish litera-ture and reports from school authorities will be analysed. In particular the so called external schools for the feeble-minded had a certain impact on the emergence and spreading of the normalisation approach. As a result of our research, and by linking it to the development of the Swedish welfare state, normalisation can be contextualised historically. This outcome is of high relevance for understanding the history of a path-breaking concept. Finally, and with regard to the future, the question of adaptability and modernity of normalisation arises.

  • Field, Capital, and Habitus: The Impact of Pierre Bourdieu on Bibliometrics
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Quantitative Science Studies. - : MIT Press. - 2641-3337. ; , s. 1-100
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study is a critical review aimed at assessing the reception received in bibliometric research by the theories and concepts developed by the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. The dataset consists of 182 documents, including original articles, editorial material, review articles, conference papers, monographs, and doctoral dissertations. A quantitative analysis was used to establish the authors and countries that most frequently make use of Bourdieu’s theories, as well as the most popular concepts, which were identified as “field”, followed by “symbolic capital” and “social capital.” Then, the article discusses the impact of Bourdieusian key concepts such as “field.” Among the findings, the following are noteworthy: the integration of his field theory into pre-existing bibliometric conceptualizations of research fields, especially when power relations are problematized; the use of the “symbolic capital” in connection with citation analysis and altmetrics; and greater interest for Bourdieu’s theories compared to his methods, although some sources have used Bourdieu’s preferred statistical method, correspondence analysis. Moreover, Bourdieu’s theoretical impact is noticeable in research on journals, university rankings, early career researchers, and gender. The paper’s conclusions point to future research paths based on concepts less used in the bibliometric literature, such as ‘delegation.’
