  • Can participants predict where ambulance-requiring cases occur at a half marathon?
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian journal of medicine & science in sports. - Köpenhamn : Wiley. - 1600-0838 .- 0905-7188. ; 28:12, s. 2760-2766
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite endurance races leading to a substantial number of ambulance-requiring cases (ARC), little is known regarding where they occur, meaning that knowing where to place medical teams, ambulance pick-up points, etc, is difficult. This article investigates whether the location of ARCs can be identified by race participants.Using the world's largest half marathon (Gothenburg half marathon) as a case, 237 runners were asked, post-race, to mark on a map which geographical point of the race was most exhausting. Using the level of agreement tests, these geographical points were then compared with the GPS positions of ARCs.According to the level of agreement tests, the most exhausting positions (MEP), as identified by participants, seem to be highly correlated to the location of ARCs. This study can also show that ambulance-requiring cases seem to be more prevalent towards the end of the race and in uphill sections.By asking participants where they found the race most exhausting it seems possible to identify high-risk places for an ARC. From a practical perspective, using this method could considerably increase the safety of competitors as well as improving the cost-effectiveness of safety interventions at endurance races. Further studies are needed to understand the specific risk factors of the high-risk areas as well as characteristics of collapsed runners.

  • Vulnerability and stressors on the pathway to depression in a global cohort of young athletics (track and field) athletes
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Scientific Reports. - London, United Kingdom : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 12:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This research set out to identify pathways from vulnerability and stressors to depression in a global population of young athletes. Retrospective data were collected at age 18-19 years from Athletics athletes (n = 1322) originating from Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania, and the Americas. We hypothesised that sports-related and non-sports-related stressors in interaction with structural vulnerability instigate depression. Path modelling using Maximum likelihood estimation was employed for the data analysis. Depression caseness and predisposition were determined using the WHO-5 instrument. Thirty-six percent of the athletes (n = 480) returned complete data. Eighteen percent of the athletes reported lifetime physical abuse, while 11% reported sexual abuse. Forty-five percent of the athletes had recently sustained an injury. The prevalence of depression caseness was 5.6%. Pathways to depression caseness were observed from female sex (p = 0.037) and injury history (p = 0.035) and to predisposition for depression also through exposure to a patriarchal society (p = 0.046) and physical abuse (p < 0.001). We conclude that depression in a global population of young athletes was as prevalent as previously reported from general populations, and that universal mental health promotion in youth sports should include provision of equal opportunities for female and male participants, injury prevention, and interventions for abuse prevention and victim support.

  • Idrottsrörelsen är inte anpassad för alla : Flickors erfarenheter om fysiska aktiviteter i och utanför den organiserade idrotten
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Socialmedicinsk Tidskrift. - Stockholm. - 0037-833X .- 2000-4192. ; :4, s. 612-620
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Doing childhood, doing gender, but not doing sports : Unorganized girls’ reflections on leisure time from a relational perspective
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Childhood. - : SAGE Publications. - 0907-5682 .- 1461-7013. ; 29:2, s. 172-186
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim is to analyze how girls from a multi-ethnic area, not doing sports, reason about their well-being during leisure time, and how they think about physical activities, social relations, and their near future. The results say that they mainly regard leisure time as a moment for rest. They have close relations in primary groups but weaker secondary relations. They reveal stereotypical opinions about gender divisions in sports. Physical activity is unwanted and tiresome, if not part of playing.
