  • Orthorexia nervosa : An integrative literature review of a lifestyle syndrome
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being. - Järfälla : Taylor & Francis. - 1748-2623 .- 1748-2631. ; 10:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bratman first proposed orthorexia nervosa in the late 1990s, defining it an obsession with eating healthy food to achieve, for instance, improved health. Today, in the Swedish media, excessive exercising plays a central role in relation to orthorexia. A few review articles on orthorexia have been conducted; however, these have not focused on aspects of food and eating, sport, exercise, or a societal perspective. The overall aim of this study was to provide an overview and synthesis of what philosophies of science approaches form the current academic framework of orthorexia. Key questions were: What aspects of food and eating are related to orthorexia? What role do exercise and sports play in relation to orthorexia? In what ways are orthorexia contextualized? Consequently, the concept of healthism was used to discuss and contextualize orthorexia. The method used was an integrative literature review; the material covered 19 empirical and theoretical articles published in peer-reviewed journals. This review demonstrates a multifaceted nature of orthorexia research; this field has been examined from four different philosophies of science approaches (i.e., empirical-atomistic, empirical-atomistic with elements of empirical-holistic, empirical-holistic, and rational-holistic) on individual, social, and societal levels. The majority of the articles followed an empirical-atomistic approach that focused on orthorexia as an individual issue, which was discussed using healthism. Our analysis indicates a need for (a) more empirical-holistic research that applies interpretive qualitative methods and uses a social perspective of health, e.g., healthism and (b) examining the role of sports and exercise in relation to orthorexia that takes the problematizing of "orthorexic behaviours" within the sports context into account.

  • Electronic sport and its impact on future sport
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Sport in Society. - Abingdon : Informa UK Limited. - 1743-0437 .- 1743-0445. ; 13:2, s. 287-299
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • According to public health and media discourses, the mere mentioning of computer gaming (E-sport) as a form of sports might be considered subversive. As a matter of fact, the two practices are considered to be oppositional. Sports are often regarded as virtuous, whereas computer gaming is looked upon as a vice. In this light, the basic aim of this essay is to discuss and analyse the ‘sporting qualities’ of competitive computer gaming in relation to the definition of sport. The reasoning will also forecast the future of competitive computer gaming. How might this new form of ‘sport’ develop and what impact will it have on future sports in general? We answer the question by presenting three possible scenarios. Might it even be that we are standing on the threshold of a new phase in the evolution of sports?

  • Balancing performance-based expectations with a holistic perspective on coaching : a qualitative study of Swedish women's national football team coaches' practice experiences
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being. - Abingdon : Taylor & Francis. - 1748-2623 .- 1748-2631. ; 12:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore how an exclusive sample of women's national football team coaches described how they implement careful coaching while facing social and organizational pressure to win medals.Method: To consider coaches' negotiations, we drew on Noddings' concept of caring. Using an interpretive research paradigm, we conducted in-depth interviews with five Swedish women's national football team coaches. An abductive approach was used to simultaneously process the theoretical framework of "ethics of care" and the empirical data. Results: The coaches unanimously adopted a holistic perspective to coaching. The coaching strategies they described included promoting players' development, well-being, and sustainable elite performance; listening to the players' voices and engaging in dialogue; and creating a positive environment and promoting fair play. Conclusions: These findings demonstrate that the women coaches, despite performance pressure, adopt caring coaching in the form of Noddings' pedagogical modelling, dialogue, and confirmation strategies, and provide an example of how coaches can adopt caring, holistic, and athlete-centred coaching while working at the highest level of competitive sport and achieving competitive success.

  • A salutogenic strengths-based approach in practice : an illustration from a school in Sweden
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Curriculum Studies in Health and Physical Education. - : Routledge. - 2574-2981 .- 2574-299X. ; 9:3, s. 237-252
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite an extensive debate and an openness of teachers to a strength-based approach to health and physical education, it is not always clear what a salutogenic strengths-based approach might look like in practice, at least not in the day-to-day work in schools. The purpose of this article is to present a salutogenic strengths-based school initiative in Sweden and to identify health discourses in the school's practice. An insider perspective is used to explore health in the school through Brookfield's four lenses for exploring one's own teaching practice. Two health discourses are identified: (1) an individual health discourse rooted in the fostering of personal development, and (2) a value-based health discourse build up around social relations and the fostering of democratic values. The individual health discourse can be understood as based in a pathogenic norm, and in the investigated school practice the individual health discourse dominated the school health initiative despite the salutogenic intentions.

  • Mindful Recovery : A Case Study of a Burned-Out Elite Shooter
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: The Sport psychologist. - : Human Kinetics. - 0888-4781 .- 1543-2793. ; 27:1, s. 92-102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research on how to recover from athlete burnout is scarce. The current aim is therefore to describe an intervention with an elite shooter suffering from burnout, and the use of mindfulness and Qigong to reestablish sport functioning as well as general well-being. The participant used mindfulness and Qigong exercise on a daily basis. Exercise frequency, exercise time, concentration level and Qigong state were noted daily, and levels of stress, energy and primordial force were self-rated weekly for 20 weeks, and followed up after 30, 40 and 50 weeks. The participant recovered from burnout to a state of general well-being (energy and primordial force changed from weak to strong), and her ability to stay concentrated in a Qigong state changed from weak to strong. Her capacity to shoot high scores was reestablished, even if her shooting endurance was not fully recovered. Mindfulness and Qigong techniques may be useful in the prevention of and recovery from athlete burnout.

  • Teaching on body ideals in physical education: a lesson study in Swedish upper secondary school
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Curriculum Studies in Health and Physical Education. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2574-2981 .- 2574-299X. ; 12:3, s. 232-250
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • ‘Characteristics and consequences of different body ideals’ are a mandatory curriculum content in Swedish physical education (PE). Didactic strategies for teaching on body ideals are, however, scarce. In this paper, we introduce a classroom-based teaching unit on body ideals and present didactic possibilities and challenges of the unit. We used a lesson study approach, drawing on Nutbeam’s concept of health literacy. Our methodology involved focus group interviews with students and teachers, lesson observations and minutes of meetings which we analysed thematically. We found teaching on body ideals to be highly meaningful to students but their engagement differed based on personal backgrounds, school context and didactic design. The gendered nature of body ideals and a lack of embodied didactics constituted challenges, while the use of storied cases emerged as a potent didactic strategy. We conclude with practical recommendations for teaching on body ideals in PE.

  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter provides an illustration of how digital technologies (DTs) are experienced by Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) students. The illustration is based on the reflections of two students at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden. The students received an assignment that involved demonstrating how a specific DT could be implemented. Three perspectives of the practitioners' experiences are provided. A Deweyan perspective shows how the students and their situations are transformed by DTs. A Foucauldian perspective focuses on the regulating aspects of technology. An applied Information Technology perspective demonstrates how DTs become part of the social practices of physical education. © 2017 Ashley Casey, Victoria A. Goodyear and Kathleen M. Armour. • Why do Wii teach physical education in school?
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Swedish Journal of Sport Research. - : Swedish Association for behacioural and social research in sport. - 2001-6018 .- 2001-9475. ; 2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Videogames including bodily movement have recently been promoted as tools to be used in school to encourage young people to be more physically active. The purpose of this systematic review has been to explore the arguments for and against using exergames in school settings and thus facilitate new insights into this field. Most of the arguments for and/or against these of exergames can be organised in relation to health and sport. In relation to health, the dominant theme is about fitness and obesity. In relation to sport, the two main themes were skill acquisition, and exergames as an alternative to traditional PE. Theidea why Wii teach PE in schools is that children are becoming more obese, which in turn threatens the health of the population. Schools seem to be an appropriate arena for this intervention, and by using exergames as an energy consuming and enjoyable physical activity a behaviour modification and the establishment of good healthy habits is argued to be achieved

  • Could Interdisciplinary Research be a Way to Re-think the Organization of Volunteers?
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Interdisciplinary Sciences. - : ORDT: Organization for Research Development and Training (P) Ltd. - 2594-3405. ; 7:2, s. 1-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Volunteering is a global phenomenon and different type of volunteers can be found in different types of organizations. Societal changes in how people volunteer and in how organizations use volunteers have made researchers call for a re-examining of organizing of volunteers. Therefore, this study aims to explore how different types of volunteering are organized in different types of organizations. The study uses an interdisciplinary research (IDR) approach with two perspectives, which in this paper are called Volunteer management (VM) and Volunteer coordination (VC). Four different Swedish organizations with different type of volunteers, two different types of sports organizations, one social organization and an entrepreneurial network are used as cases. The data consists of 18 interviews with project managers and volunteers. The data is analyzed in three IDR-inspired steps using both qualitative and quantitative analyses. This study reveals that understanding how to organize volunteering benefits from viewing volunteer organization in a proposed two-dimensional model. This model includes management strategies in different phases as well as relational perspectives and strikes a balance between organizational structure and climate. Merging research traditions can contribute to new knowledge in a changing society. Voluntary organizations need to work with everyday structures that allow them the flexibility to develop a sustainable volunteer organization by both managing and coordinating their volunteers.

  • Impact of emotional distress and pain-related fear on patients with chronic pain : Subgroup analysis of patients referred to multimodal rehabilitation
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine. - : Foundation for Rehabilitation Information. - 1650-1977 .- 1651-2081. ; 49:4, s. 354-361
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Multimodal rehabilitation programmes (MMRP) for chronic pain could be improved by determining which patients do not benefit fully. General distress and pain-related fear may explain variations in the treatment effects of MMRP.Design: Cohort study with a cross-sectional, prospective part.Patients: Chronic musculoskeletal pain patients referred to 2 hospital-based pain rehabilitation clinics. Methods: The cross-sectional part of this study cluster analyses patients (n = 1,218) with regard to distress and pain-related fear at first consultation in clinical pain rehabilitation and describes differences in external variables between clusters. The prospective part follows the subsample of patients (n = 260) participating in MMRP and describes outcome post-treatment.Results: Four distinct subgroups were found: (i) those with low levels of distress and pain-related fear; (ii) those with high levels of pain-related fear; (iii) those with high levels of distress; and (iv) those with high levels of distress and pain-related fear. These subgroups showed differences in demographics, pain characteristics, quality of life, and acceptance, as well as the degree of MMRP participation and MMRP outcome. Conclusion: Among patients with chronic pain referred to MMRP there are subgroups with different profiles of distress and pain-related fear, which are relevant to understanding the adaptation to pain and MMRP outcome. This knowledge may help us to select patients and tailor treatment for better results.
