  • Orthorexia nervosa : An integrative literature review of a lifestyle syndrome
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being. - Järfälla : Taylor & Francis. - 1748-2623 .- 1748-2631. ; 10:1
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Bratman first proposed orthorexia nervosa in the late 1990s, defining it an obsession with eating healthy food to achieve, for instance, improved health. Today, in the Swedish media, excessive exercising plays a central role in relation to orthorexia. A few review articles on orthorexia have been conducted; however, these have not focused on aspects of food and eating, sport, exercise, or a societal perspective. The overall aim of this study was to provide an overview and synthesis of what philosophies of science approaches form the current academic framework of orthorexia. Key questions were: What aspects of food and eating are related to orthorexia? What role do exercise and sports play in relation to orthorexia? In what ways are orthorexia contextualized? Consequently, the concept of healthism was used to discuss and contextualize orthorexia. The method used was an integrative literature review; the material covered 19 empirical and theoretical articles published in peer-reviewed journals. This review demonstrates a multifaceted nature of orthorexia research; this field has been examined from four different philosophies of science approaches (i.e., empirical-atomistic, empirical-atomistic with elements of empirical-holistic, empirical-holistic, and rational-holistic) on individual, social, and societal levels. The majority of the articles followed an empirical-atomistic approach that focused on orthorexia as an individual issue, which was discussed using healthism. Our analysis indicates a need for (a) more empirical-holistic research that applies interpretive qualitative methods and uses a social perspective of health, e.g., healthism and (b) examining the role of sports and exercise in relation to orthorexia that takes the problematizing of "orthorexic behaviours" within the sports context into account.

  • Can Wearable Sweat Lactate Sensors Contribute to Sports Physiology?
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ACS Sensors. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2379-3694. ; 6:10, s. 3496-3508
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The rise of wearable sensors to measure lactate content in human sweat during sports activities has attracted the attention of physiologists given the potential of these "analytical tools" to provide real-time information. Beyond the assessment of the sensing technology per se, which, in fact, has not rigorously been validated yet in controlled conditions, there are many open questions about the true usefulness of such wearable sensors in real scenarios. On the one hand, the evidence for the origin of sweat lactate (e.g., via the sweat gland, derivation from blood, or other alternative mechanisms), its high concentration (1-25 mM or even higher) compared to levels in the blood, and the possible correlation between different biofluids (particularly blood) is rather contradictory and generates vivid debate in the field. On the other hand, it is important to point out that accurate detection of sweat lactate is highly dependent on the procedure used to collect and/or reach the fluid, and this can likely explain the large discrepancies reported in the literature. In brief, this paper provides our vision of the current state of the field and a thoughtful evaluation of the possible reasons for present controversies, together with an analysis of the impact of wearable sweat lactate sensors in the physiological context. Finally, although there is not yet overwhelming scientific evidence to provide an unequivocal answer to whether wearable sweat lactate sensors can contribute to sports physiology, we still understand the importance to bring this challenging question up-front to create awareness and guidance in the development, validation, and implementation of wearable sensors.

  • The correlation between the imaging characteristics of hamstring injury and time required before returning to sports : a literature review.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Exercise Rehabilitation. - : Korean Society of Exercise Rehabilitation. - 2288-176X .- 2288-1778. ; 12:3, s. 134-142
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Injuries to the hamstring muscles are common in athletes. Track and field, Australian football, American football and soccer are examples of sports where hamstring injuries are the most common. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether there is a correlation between a hamstring injury prognosis and its characteristics of imaging parameters. The literature search was performed in the databases PubMed and CINAHL, and eleven articles were included. Seven out of the 11 articles showed a correlation between the size of the hamstring injury and length of time required before returning to sports. Different authors have reported contrasting results about length of time required before returning to sports due to location of injury within specific muscle. Majority of the articles found hamstring strain correlated to an extended amount of time required before returning to sports.

  • Sport and Social Entrepreneurship : A Review of a Concept in Progress
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sport Management. - : Human Kinetics. - 0888-4773 .- 1543-270X. ; 31:2, s. 191-206
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social entrepreneurship represents a new organizational form reflecting a time of societal change. The concept of social entrepreneurship has in recent years received an increased academic interest from the field of sport management. This review therefore aims to outline the scope and focus of, as well as theoretically position, the utilization of the concept of social entrepreneurship in the current body of peer-reviewed research within the field of sport and social entrepreneurship. Thirty-three English language peer-reviewed articles were selected and analyzed using Gartner’s (1985) variables of entrepreneurship and three schools of thought within social entrepreneurship. The findings show that the scope of research into sport and social entrepreneurship is limited and that sport plays a minor role in the articles. The articles focus on the processes of social entrepreneurship, but the manner in which the concept of social entrepreneurship is used differs between articles and is seldom defined. These findings indicate that much can be done to better understand sport and social entrepreneurship. Emerging directions for future research are provided.

  • Piecing the puzzle together : case studies of international research in health-promoting sports clubs
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Global Health Promotion. - : Sage Publications. - 1757-9759 .- 1757-9767. ; 23:1 (Suppl), s. 75-84
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper seeks to review the current international health-promoting sports club (HPSC) research, drawing together findings based on case studies from various countries to illustrate the status of HPSCs. In addition, future challenges for HPSC research and implementation are considered. The review includes six case studies from five countries. In summary, there are two major research themes in this area, namely ‘research into HPSC activity’ and ‘research into HPSC networks’. The first theme investigates the extent to which sports clubs and/or national sports organisations invest in health promotion (HP) – both in policy and practice. The latter theme is driven by an intention to widen the scope of HPSCs to reach novel internal actors, like parents, siblings, etc., and/or external non-sporting bodies, like communities, schools, etc. The future challenges for HPSC research require a better understanding of the motives, barriers and capacities of sports clubs and coaches. Sports organisations, clubs and coaches generally support the intent of the HPSC concept, but even with the best evidence- or theory-based HP programmes/guidelines/standards, nothing will happen in practice if the nature and capacities of sports clubs are not better acknowledged. Therefore, a call for embracing implementation science is finally made to enhance implementation.

  • What Is Known About Mindfulness and Self-Compassion Among Sport Coaches? : A Scoping Review
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Sport Coaching Journal. - : Human Kinetics. - 2328-918X .- 2328-9198. ; , s. 1-12
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mindfulness and self-compassion are two constructs positively related to well-being and mental health outside sport. Within sport, these constructs are emerging in research, yet the extant work has primarily been conducted with athlete samples. The aim of this scoping review was to provide a broad synthesis of the literature on mindfulness and self-compassion among coaches. Fourteen articles were included, 11 of them published 2019–2022. Of the 14 publications, the concepts studied were mindfulness (n = 10), self-compassion (n = 2), and a combination of both (n = 2). The samples were predominantly male coaches (68.7%), and most of the studies targeted coaches at the elite or competitive level. The most common area studied was developing and testing interventions and programs, followed by depicting relationships of mindfulness or self-compassion with desirable outcomes. This review significantly extends the current knowledge by illuminating critical issues in this rapidly moving area of research; the need for conceptual and contextual clarity of mindfulness and self-compassion; methodological considerations, such as measures that may allow reliable comparison across studies; and the need to further explore the potential benefits of mindfulness and self-compassion for coaches for sustainability and performance.

  • The effect of muscle loading on skeletal muscle regenerative potential : an update of current research findings relating to aging and neuromuscular pathology
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: American Journal of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. - Baltimore : Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. - 0894-9115 .- 1537-7385. ; 88:2, s. 145-155
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Skeletal muscle is a dynamic tissue with a remarkable ability to continuously respond to environmental stimuli. Among its adaptive responses is the widely investigated ability of skeletal muscle to regenerate after loading or injury or both. Although significant basic science efforts have been dedicated to better understand the underlying mechanism controlling skeletal muscle regeneration, there has been relatively little impact in the clinical approaches used to treat skeletal muscle injuries and wasting. The purpose of this review article is to provide an overview of the basic biology of satellite cell function in response to muscle loading and to relate these findings in the context of aging and neuromuscular pathology for the rehabilitation medicine specialist.

  • The relation between teaching physical education and discourses on body weight : an integrative review of research
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Curriculum studies in health and physical education. - : Taylor & Francis. - 2574-2981 .- 2574-299X. ; 12:3, s. 287-305
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this integrative review of research is to contribute to knowledge about the relation between teaching physical education (PE) and discourses of body weight. The review consists of summarising and synthesising features focusing on how discourses on the relation between teaching PE and body weight in scientific literature in different ways shape the idea of the role of PE. The results of the review reveal that the purposes, content, and forms for teaching PE constitute three discourses of teaching PE in relation to body weight: (i) a risk discourse, (ii) a critical obesity discourse, and (iii) a pluralistic discourse. From these discourses, five different roles of PE are identified; (i) Solving obesity and inactivity, (ii) Including overweight pupils, (iii) Rejecting an obesity epidemic, (iv) Supporting and understanding overweight pupils, and (v) Transforming PE in relation to a plurality of perspectives on body weight. As a consequence, we urge practitioners to take a reflective distance towards the purpose, content, and the pedagogies they are employing in relation to discourses on body weight in order to make informed decisions regarding PE curricula.

  • Managing Sport: Governance and Performance: Best Papers from the “Sport as Business”-Track at the EURAM Annual Meeting in Rome 2010”, special issue Sport Business and Management: An International Journal
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Sport, Business and Management. - 2042-678X. ; 1:3, s. 214-218
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The papers accepted for the “Sport as a Business”-SIG Track at EURAM in Rome (2010) were divided into four major groups: governance, football, individual/teams and branding/sponsorship., Five of the best papers out of those groups, were included in the present SBM volume. The first two articles are on governance: Leigh Robinson and Brian Minikin give a general picture on strategic capacity in one type of sport organization the Olympic organization and Mathieu Winand with three colleagues- Benoît Rihoux, David Qualizza and Thierry Zintz- elaborates on the ten key determinants leading to high performance in sport organizations in one country. After these two governance featured contributions the third article is on football. Benoit Senaux analyses the increasing commercialization in France and the shifts in its institutional logics. Winfried Ruigkrok and his two colleagues, Peder Greve and Martin Engeler shed light on the individual aspect i.e. all 736 players in the World Cup 2006, the project teams and team performance. The fifth article, representing the fourth of our four groups, is on sponsoring and the German Bundesliga. Christoph Breuer and Christopher Rumpf report from an examination of the stimuli on consumers’ memorization of sponsoring brands in a TV context.

  • Measurement of physical activity in clinical practice using accelerometers.
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of internal medicine. - : Wiley. - 1365-2796 .- 0954-6820. ; 286:2, s. 137-153
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Accelerometers are commonly used in clinical and epidemiological research for more detailed measures of physical activity and to target the limitations of self-report methods. Sensors are attached at the hip, wrist and thigh, and the acceleration data are processed and calibrated in different ways to determine activity intensity, body position and/or activity type. Simple linear modelling can be used to assess activity intensity from hip and thigh data, whilst more advanced machine-learning modelling is to prefer for the wrist. The thigh position is most optimal to assess body position and activity type using machine-learning modelling. Frequency filtering and measurement resolution needs to be considered for correct assessment of activity intensity. Simple physical activity measures and statistical methods are mostly used to investigate relationship with health, but do not take advantage of all information provided by accelerometers and do not consider all components of the physical activity behaviour and their interrelationships. More advanced statistical methods are suggested that analyse patterns of multiple measures of physical activity to demonstrate stronger and more specific relationships with health. However, evaluations of accelerometer methods show considerable measurement errors, especially at individual level, which interferes with their use in clinical research and practice. Therefore, better objective methods are needed with improved data processing and calibration techniques, exploring both simple linear and machine-learning alternatives. Development and implementation of accelerometer methods into clinical research and practice requires interdisciplinary collaboration to cover all aspects contributing to useful and accurate measures of physical activity behaviours related to health.
