  • Sport management. Del 3 : Idrottens marknader och konsumtionskultur
  • 2020. - 1

• Post retirement experiences of former Swedish elite athletes
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: ECSS 2014.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Introduction Previous studies have shown that successful sport careers are often based upon the notion that athletes are living a life in harmony, and that positive adjustment to retirement is dependent on the athletes coping strategies and adjustment skills adapted during the sport career (Patriksson, 1995; Stråhlman, 2006). The aims of this study are to describe; (1) the perceptions and experiences of the road through the elite sports career, (2) experiences of the transition from elite sport to a post retirement life. Method 36 athletes were interviewed (26 men -10 women) all with experience of top-level sport on international basis. One third of the group had finished their career before or during the 1990s and the others in the 2000s. The respondents represented various sports. The issues discussed highlight the aims of the study, and the questions where formulated to grasp the essence of the respondents’ experiences. Results The career ended for many of the respondents as a conscious planned decision, even if one third made a comeback. Only a few ended in an abrupt way. The decision to end the sport career was often a combination of reasons; lack of motivation, injury - health problems and age. The transition from elite sport went for the majority smoothly and the respondents enjoyed their retirement lives, although a small portion of them experienced problems as a direct result of their career ending. Sport still played a central role and sport related properties were important for the respondents’ lives. No one regretted their elite sports career but they underlined the importance to prepare for the post retirement life. The majority of the respondents found new jobs, most sport related, and they were satisfied with their lives. Discussion It is important not only to focus on the elite sport career, but on career support in general, especially for those with problematic adjustment. Unproblematic voluntary adjustment is often linked to the possibility to prepare in advance for retirement. Since no one reported having severe injuries that predominantly affected their post retirement life, they could put their new ambitions in other areas. Sport organisations, public authorities and individuals are all responsible for the athlete’s retirement. References Park, S., Lavallee, D. & Tod, D. (2013). • Perceptions of leadership behavior and the relationship to athletes among Scandinavian coaches
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Sport Studies Forum. - 2000-088X. ; 5, s. 131-148
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the perceptions of leadership behavior and coach–athlete relationship in Scandinavian coaches. A secondary purpose was to investigate if differences in national sport education, level of coaching and coaching experiences in individual or team sport have an influence on leadership behavior and coach–athlete relationships. One hundred and forty nine coaches at international level or national top level from Denmark, Norway and Sweden participated in this study (134 male and 15 female). The methods of investigation were Chelladurai’s Leadership scale of sport (LSS) (Chelladurai & Saleh, 1980) and Jowett’s coach–athlete relationship perspective (Jowett & Wyllemann, 2006). The results showed that the most frequent self-reported behavioral components between the described coach–athlete relationship subscales and preferred leadership behavior among Scandinavian top-level coaches were training and instructions, positive feedback and democratic behavior, respectively. The study also revealed a positive coach–athlete relationship between (1) commitment and training and instruction, (2) positive feedback and social support, and (3) between complementarities and training and instruction behavior. A significant difference was found between top coaches in Denmark and Sweden on commitment and complementarity, and more experienced coaches used significantly more training and instruction and social support in their coaching than did less experienced coaches. Coaches in team sports reported more autocratic behavior and less democratic behavior than coaches in individual sports.

  • A guess by an expert or a joint accumulation of experience? A study of the admission process in Swedish sport schools: perspectives from school sport teachers
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Sport Coaching Review. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 2164-0629.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article we use the concept of Communities of Practice (CoP) to understand how Swedish school sport teachers enact the admission process, the identification and selection of student athletes, to Swedish national upper secondary elite sport schools (SNESS). Data were gathered by conducting six focus group interviews involving 18 school sports teachers representing six different sports. The findings indicate that the admission process is influenced by and enacted through sport-specific CoPs and include a strategic identification of athletes, a set of tools – physical aptitude tests, sport-specific training, interviews, social activities – and documents (matrices, forms, interview-guides). While the process constitutes individual subjective assessments of athletes, the findings also imply that the teachers’ common engagement is the central enterprise of their collective actions. The admission is a cooperative process where the teachers expend their collective competence, joint cumulative experience, to identify, assess, and select student athletes.

  • “It’s an impossible task, but I have the task” – on the process of selecting student-athletes to sport schools
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: SVEBI 2022. ; , s. 33-34
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction Sport schools are designated for those who have been identified as talented athletes with potential to achieve sporting success at elite level. However, research suggests that talent identification and selection is complex, and highly based upon coaches’ subjective judgements. In Sweden, all pupils in 9th grade can apply to sport schools in upper secondary education. The schools have a restricted entry, governed by the educational act and administered by the Swedish sports confederation (RF). School legislations states that the applicant who is thought to have the best chances of utilizing the school sports program should be given priority when selections are made. RF states that the purpose with sport schools is to support talents with the prerequisite skills to reach national or international elite as adults. Consequently, identification and selection of young athletes are indispensable. Aim and theoretical framework The aim of this ongoing project is to study school sport teachers’ perspective on the admission process in Swedish sport schools, and furthermore to analyse current methods used to assess and select future student-athletes. The concept community of practice (CoP) (Lave & Wenger, 1991) is used to analyse the data. A CoP is a group of people with shared interest in a specific domain. This group collaborate, share information, and actively work on advancing the general knowledge of the domain. Method We undertook conversational interviews in focus groups with 18 school sport teachers (male = 13, female = 5) representing six individual sports (alpine skiing, canoeing, cross-country skiing, orienteering, swimming, and track and field). Results The results indicate that the time-consuming admission-process involves, identification of, outreach to, and pre-selection of young athletes, evaluation of applicants on site (via tests, training, interviews, and social activities) and a collective final selection based on systemized assessments, summarized overall pictures, of the applicants. Furthermore, the admission-process constitutes individual subjective assessments of young athletes. However, our findings imply that the final decision, and selection of student-athletes is a collaborative process. The teachers use their shared competence (professional knowledge), joint accumulated experience, and practical sense, to select the applicant who is thought to have the best chances of utilizing a school sports program and have the prerequisites sport-specific skills to reach national or international elite as adults. Discussion and conclusions In our preliminary discussion we argue that the admission process is influenced by, and negotiated through, a sport-based community of practice. In this community, the inherent sport culture is reflected through school sport teachers’ assessments of applicants who preferably have the right character, (a positive) attitude, willingness to train, and work hard. On one hand, the teachers in the community deepen their knowledge and expertise in the admission process by interacting on continuing basis, it enhances the validation of, and justifies, their selections. On the other hand, a community with recurrent obligations may limit its development by imposing implicit boundaries, and reproduce, i.e., values and beliefs. To avoid path dependency, it is essential that members of the community continuously renew, renegotiate, and reflect upon, their practice.

  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim and Research Questions: Internationally, the concept of school sports usually refers to competitive sports organised in a school setting. In Swedish upper secondary education, school sports is practised within the school subject “special sports” and is taught by teachers having a degree in special sports. Special sports as a subject is equivalent to other school subjects as it has its own syllabus and grading criteria (Ferry & Lund, 2018). The subject is designated for young athletes with potential to achieve sporting success at elite level and all pupils in 9th grade can apply. However, the admission to this subject is restricted, i.e., there is a selection of applicants. On an overall level, the admission process is governed by both the Swedish Education Act, and school sport policy documents issued by the Swedish Sports Confederation (SSC). The Education Act states that the applicant who is considered to have the best chances of utilizing special sports should be given priority when selections are made. SSC states that the purpose with school sports is to support talents with the prerequisite skills to reach elite level as adults. Consequently, identification and selection of young athletes are indispensable, and are performed by the special sports teachers. Against this background, the aim of this paper is to study special sports teachers’ perspective on the admission process, and furthermore to analyse current methods used to assess and select student-athletes.Theoretical Framework and Literature Review: Previous studies have showed that individual practitioners’ subjective judgements of recognizing and “seeing” talent are essential when assessing young athletes’ potential(Christensen 2009, p. 372; Roberts et al., 2019). In this paper we propose that the admissionprocess can be viewed as a social practice performed in a specific community. Therefore, the concept community of practice (CoP), as described by Wenger (1998), is used to frame the discussion. Wenger suggests that a CoP displays three characteristics: (a) a shared practice;(b) a common engagement forged in participating in a practice together; and (c) a set of tools developed to help in the practice’s performance. Hence, the special sports teachers can be considered as a community who share a practice, a common engagement in the practice and aset of domain-specific tools.Research Design, Method, and Data Analysis: This paper is designed as a multiple case study. Data were collected through six focus group interviews with 18 special sports teachers (male = 13, female = 5) from six individual sports (alpine skiing, canoeing, cross-country skiing, orienteering, swimming, and track and field) at eleven upper secondary sport schools. The teachers were divided into groups based on their sports. The interviews were conversational, researchers and participants were perceived as collaborators discussing the admission-process and methods used for assessing the applicants. Thereafter, a theoretical thematic analysis, as suggested by Braun and Clarke (2006), was undertaken where the interest was to find in what ways the characteristics of a CoP appeared in the data. Results: The results indicate that the admission process involves: (a) identification of, outreach to, andpre-selection of young athletes; (b) evaluation of applicants on site (via tests, training, interviews, and social activities); and (c) a collective final selection based on summarizedoverall pictures of the applicants. Furthermore, the admission-process constitutes individual subjective assessments of young athletes. However, our findings imply that the final selection of student-athletes is a cooperative process. The teachers use their shared competence and joint accumulated experience to select the applicants considered to have the best chances of utilizing special sports and have the potential to reach elite level as adults.Discussion and Conclusions: The results imply that the admission process is influenced by, and negotiated through, acommunity of practice. In this community, the inherent sport culture is reflected through special sports teachers’ assessments of applicants who preferably have the right character, willingness to train, and work hard. On one hand, the community deepens their knowledge and expertise in the admission process by interacting continuously, which should enhance the validation of their selections. On the other hand, the community may limit its development by imposing implicit boundaries and reproducing values and beliefs. To avoid path dependency, it is essential that communities continuously reflect upon, renegotiate, and renew their practice.
