I den här artikeln ska vi försöka bena ut begreppet ”plötslig hjärtdöd inom idrotten”: Vad är det? Vad beror det på? Och vad kan man göra för att förhindra det? I början av juli hölls en konferens vid Stanford Universitetet i USA där världsledande experter i ämnet var samlade.

- Here we presented a review of our two articles presenting the prevalence of cardiovascular disease and diabetes in neurocognitive disorders; Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, mixed dementa and Lewy body disease. Cardiovascular disease and diabetes showed a significantly lower prevalence among cases with Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body disease, both neurodegenerative disorders, compared to cases with vascular dementia. These findings strongly argue against the suggestions of Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia sharing risk factors. All neurocognitive disorders where confirmed through neuropathological examination.

- Aims: To investigate mortality, re-admission, hospital days, and number of primary health care contacts of patients with congestive heart failure in relation to level of care. Methods: The records of 175 patients were reviewed and divided into groups depending on who was responsible for the follow up: a cardiologist, a general practitioner or a nurse-led heart failure clinic. Results: The mortality rate was substantial, 22% during 12 months, and in 13.7% of the cases due to a cardiovascular diagnosis. Mortality was 3.6 % in the nurse-led group, 20% in the cardiologist group, and 27% in the general practitioner group. The mean age of patients was higher in the general practitioner group compared with the other groups. Statistical significant differences between the cardiologists and the other groups occurred concerning the combination of ACE-inhibitors/beta-blockers and diagnosis with echocardiography. Nurses had significantly fewer patients that were treated with diuretics. Patients followed up by the nurse had fewer re-admissions and fewer hospital days than did patients in the other groups. Conclusions: The study indicates that a follow up by a nurse is of substantial value for patients with congestive heart failure. Breakfast consumption and CVD risk factors in European adolescents : The HELENA (Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence) Study

- Objective To examine the association between breakfast consumption and CVD risk factors in European adolescents. Design Cross-sectional. Breakfast consumption was assessed by the statement 'I often skip breakfast' and categorized into 'consumer', 'occasional consumer' and 'skipper'. Blood pressure, weight, height, waist circumference, skinfold thickness, total cholesterol (TC), HDL cholesterol (HDL-C), LDL cholesterol (LDL-C), TAG, insulin and glucose were measured and BMI, TC:HDL-C, LDL-C:HDL-C and homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) were calculated. Setting The European Union-funded HELENA (Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence) Study. Subjects European adolescents, aged 12·50- 17·49 years, from ten cities within the HELENA study (n 2929, n 925 with blood sample, 53 % females). Results In males, significant differences across breakfast consumption category ('consumer', 'occasional consumer' and 'skipper') were seen for age, BMI, skinfold thickness, waist circumference, cardiorespiratory fitness, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, TC:HDL-C, LDL-C:HDL-C, glucose, insulin, HOMA-IR and LDL-C; in females, for cardiorespiratory fitness, skinfold thickness, BMI, insulin and HOMA-IR. In overweight/obese males significant differences were also seen for TC and LDL-C, whereas no differences were observed in non-overweight males or in females regardless of weight status. Conclusions Our findings among European adolescents confirm previous data indicating that adolescents who regularly consume breakfast have lower body fat content. The results also show that regular breakfast consumption is associated with higher cardiorespiratory fitness in adolescents, and with a healthier cardiovascular profile, especially in males. Eating breakfast regularly may also negate somewhat the effect of excess adiposity on TC and LDL-C, especially in male adolescents.
