  • Peripheral Hole Acceptor Moieties on an Organic Dye Improve Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell Performance
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Advanced Science. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 2198-3844. ; 2:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Investigation of charge transfer dynamics in dye-sensitized solar cells is of fundamental interest and the control of these dynamics is a key factor for developing more efficient solar cell devices. One possibility for attenuating losses through recombination between injected electrons and oxidized dye molecules is to move the positive charge further away from the metal oxide surface. For this purpose, a metal-free dye named E6 is developed, in which the chromophore core is tethered to two external triphenylamine (TPA) units. After photoinduced electron injection into TiO2, the remaining hole is rapidly transferred to a peripheral TPA unit. Electron-hole recombination is slowed down by 30% compared to a reference dye without peripheral TPA units. Furthermore, it is found that the added TPA moieties improve the electron blocking effect of the dye, retarding recombination of electrons from TiO2 to the cobalt-based electrolyte.

  • Geometrical and energetical structural changes in organic dyes for dye-sensitized solar cells probed using photoelectron spectroscopy and DFT
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Chemistry, Chemical Physics - PCCP. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 1463-9076 .- 1463-9084. ; 18:1, s. 252-260
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effects of alkoxy chain length in triarylamine based donor acceptor organic dyes are investigated with respect to the electronic and molecular surface structures on the performance of solar cells and the electron lifetime. The dyes were investigated when adsorbed on TiO2 in a configuration that can be used for dye sensitized solar cells (DSCs). Specifically, the two dyes D35 and D45 were compared using photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The differences in solar cell characteristics when longer alkoxy chains are introduced in the dye donor unit are attributed to geometrical changes in dye packing while only minor differences were observed in the electronic structure. A higher dye load was observed for D45 on TiO2. However, D35 based solar cells result in higher photocurrent although the dye load is lower. This is explained by different geometrical structures of the dyes on the surface.

  • Solvent-Dependent Structure of the I-3(-) Ion Derived from Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Chemistry - A European Journal. - : Wiley. - 0947-6539 .- 1521-3765. ; 21:10, s. 4049-4055
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the solvation of LiI3 in four different solvents (water, methanol, ethanol, and acetonitrile) are employed to investigate the molecular and electronic structure of the I-3(-) ion in relation to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Simulations show that hydrogen-bond rearrangement in the solvation shell is coupled to intramolecular bond-length asymmetry in the I-3(-) ion. By a combination of charge analysis and I 4d core-level XPS measurements, the mechanism of the solvent-induced distortions has been studied, and it has been concluded that charge localization mediates intermolecular interactions and intramolecular distortion. The approach involving a synergistic combination of theory and experiment probes the solvent-dependent structure of the I-3(-) ion, and the geometric structure has been correlated with the electronic structure.

  • Surface Molecular Quantification and Photoelectrochemical Characterization of Mixed Organic Dye and Coadsorbent Layers on TiO2 for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 114:27, s. 11903-11910
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Different molecular layers on TiO2 were prepared by using the p-dimethylaniline triphenylamine based organic dye, D29, together with the coadsorbents decylphosphonic acid (DPA), dineohexyl bis(3,3-dimethylbutyl)phosphinic acid (DINHOP), and chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA). The surface molecular structure of dye and coadsorbent layers on TiO2 was investigated by photoelectron spectroscopy (PES). A focus was to determine the surface molecular concentrations using characteristic photoelectron core levels. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) were prepared from the same substrate and were further characterized by photoelectrochemical methods. Together the investigation gives information on the arrangement of the mixed molecular layer and a first insight to the extent to which the coadsorbents exchange with dye molecules on the TiO2 surface for the examined conditions.

  • Valence Level Character in a Mixed Perovskite Material and Determination of the Valence Band Maximum from Photoelectron Spectroscopy : Variation with Photon Energy
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 121:48, s. 26655-26666
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A better understanding of the electronic structure of perovskite materials used in photovoltaic devices is essential for their development and optimization. In this investigation, synchrotron-based photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) was used to experimentally delineate the character and energy position of the valence band structures of a mixed perovskite. The valence band was measured using PES with photon energies ranging from ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (21.2 eV) to hard X-rays (up to 4000 eV), and by taking the variation of the photoionization cross sections into account, we could experimentally determine the inorganic and organic contributions. The experiments were compared to theoretical calculations to further distinguish the role of the different anions in the electronic structure. This work also includes a thorough study of the valence band maximum and its position in relation to the Fermi level, which is crucial for the design and optimization of complete solar cells and their functional properties.

  • Symmetric and unsymmetric donor functionalization : Comparing structural and spectral benefits of chromophores for dye-sensitized solar cells
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Materials Chemistry. - : Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). - 0959-9428 .- 1364-5501. ; 19:39, s. 7232-7238
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A series of organic chromophores have been synthesized in order to investigate the benefits of structural versus spectral properties as well as the absorption properties and solar cell performance with unsymmetrically introduced substituents in the chromophore. Exceptionally high open-circuit voltage, Voc, was found for the symmetrical structurally benefited dye, which also gave the best overall solar cell performance.

  • Electronic and molecular surface structure of a polyene-diphenylaniline dye adsorbed from solution onto nanoporous TiO2
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: The Journal of Physical Chemistry C. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 1932-7447 .- 1932-7455. ; 111:24, s. 8580-8586
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The surface electronic and molecular structure of a new organic chromophore useful for dye-sensitized nanostructured solar cells has been investigated by means of electron spectroscopy. Initially the use of a simple molecular system containing the polyene-diphenylaniline chromophore in a solar cell device was verified. The electronic and molecular surface structure of the functional dye-sensitized interface was then investigated in detail by a combination of core level spectroscopy, valence level spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and resonant photoemission spectroscopy. The results indicate a dominating orientation of the molecule at the surface, having the diphenylaniline moiety pointing out from the surface. Valence level spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and resonant photoemission spectroscopy were used to experimentally delineate the frontier electronic structure of the molecule, and the experimental spectra were analyzed against theoretical spectra, based on density functional theory. Together the investigation gives insight into energy matching of the molecular electronic states with respect to the TiO2 substrate as well as the localization of the frontier electronic states and the direction of the charge-transfer absorption process with regards to the TiO2 surface.

  • Highly Efficient CdS Quantum Dot-Sensitized Solar Cells Based on a Modified Polysulfide Electrolyte
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of the American Chemical Society. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0002-7863 .- 1520-5126. ; 133:22, s. 8458-8460
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A modified polysulfide redox couple, [(CH(3))(4)N](2)S/[(CH(3))(4)N](2)S(n), in an organic solvent (3-methoxypropionitrile) was employed in CdS quantum dot (QD)-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs), and an unprecedented energy conversion efficiency of up to 3.2% was obtained under AM 1.5 G illumination. The QDs were linked to nanoporous TiO(2) via covalent bonds by using thioglycolic acid, and chemical bath deposition in an organic solvent was then used to prepare the QDSSCs, facilitating high wettability and superior penetration capability of the TiO(2) films. A very high fill factor of 0.89 was observed with the optimized QDSSCs.

  • How the Nature of Triphenylamine-Polyene Dyes in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells Affects the Open-Circuit Voltage and Electron Lifetimes
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Langmuir. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0743-7463 .- 1520-5827. ; 26:4, s. 2592-2598
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Three donor-linker-acceptor triphenylamine-based cyanoacrylic acid organic dyes used For dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) have been examined with respect to their effect on the open-circuit voltage (V-oc). Our previous study showed a decrease in V-oc for DSCs based oil dyes with increased molecular size (increased linker conjugation). In the present study, we investigate the origin of V-oc with respect to (i) conduction band (E-CB) positions of TiO2 and (ii) degree of recombination between electrons in TiO2 and electrolyte acceptor species at the interface. These parameters were Studied its it function of dye structure, dye load, and I-2 concentration. Two types of behavior were identified: the smaller polyene dyes show a surface-protecting effect preventing recombination upon increased dye loading, whereas the larger dyes enhance the recombination. How the different dye structures affect the recombination is discussed in terms of dye surface blocking and intermolecular interactions between dyes and electrolyte acceptor species.

    • Org. sensitizers comprising of donor, electron-conducting, and anchoring groups are designed and developed for dye-sensitized solar cell applications. A solar cell employing 3-(5'-{4-[bis-(4-hexyloxy-phenyl)-amino]-phenyl}-[2,2']bithiophenyl-5-yl)-2-cyano-acrylic acid dye spiro-OMeTAD as a hole-transporting material exhibits a short circuit photocurrent d. of 9.64 mA/cm2, an open-circuit voltage of 798 mV, and a fill factor of 0.57, corresponding to an overall conversion efficiency of 4.4% at std. AM 1.5 sunlight. Photoinduced absorption spectroscopy probes an efficient hole-transfer from dyes to the spiro-OMeTAD.
