  • Requirements for a business process model repository : A stakeholders’ perspective.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Business Information Systems. - Berlin : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 9783642128141 - 9783642128134 ; , s. 158-170
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reuse of business process models is the act of designing business processes by using existing process models. Reuse of business process models has been considered as a way to reduce the cost of modeling business processes from scratch. In order to support reuse a critical mass of process models is required which justifies the effort of maintaining a process model repository. However, recent studies show that complete repositories which can support reuse are not yet available. One of the reasons is that stakeholder requirements for process model repositories have not been sufficiently investigated. Therefore, the purpose of this work is to define requirements of a process model repository from stakeholders’ (researchers and practitioners) perspective. In this study, we start by eliciting preliminary requirements (defined as propositions) through an exploratory study followed by an empirical validation of the propositions. Based on the analysis of the results we define as a set of requirements for a process model repository.

  • Towards a formal definition of goal-oriented business process patterns
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Business Process Management Journal. - : Emerald Group Publishing. - 1463-7154 .- 1758-4116. ; 11:6, s. 650-662
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose – Organizations of today are becoming ever more focused on their business processes. This has resulted in an increasing interest in using best practices for business process re-engineering. Two problems arise in connection to using best practices: how to find a best practice that suits particular purposes, and how to ensure that the process from the best practice has the same nature as the process under re-engineering. The purpose of this paper is to address these issues. Design/methodology/approach – The paper suggests using business process patterns, i.e. relatively high level business process models, for making near formal comparison of business processes. The paper analyzes widespread modeling techniques to find out which of them suits the task of building patterns for comparison. Based on this analysis, the state-flow modeling technique is chosen and first steps towards formal definition of business process patterns based on this technique are suggested. Findings – A pattern is defined based on the notions of state space, goal, as a surface in the state space, and valid movements towards the goal. A thinkable procedure of constructing patterns is demonstrated on two real-life examples. A hypothetical procedure for comparing process is suggested but it still needs to be verified in practice. Originality/value – The originality of the paper is the way the patterns are formulated and the underlying model, the state-flow view of processes, upon which the patterns are founded.

  • Aspect-Oriented Business Process Management
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Separation of concerns has long been considered an effective and efficient strategy to deal with complexity in information systems. One sort of concern, like security and privacy, crosses over other concerns in a system. Such concerns are called cross-cutting concerns. As a result, the realization of these concerns is scattered through the whole system, which makes their management difficult.Aspect Orientation is a paradigm in information systems which aims to modularize cross-cutting concerns. This paradigm is well researched in the programming area, where many aspect-oriented programming languages have been developed, e.g., AspectJ.It has also been investigated in other areas, such as requirement engineering and service composition. In the Business Process Management (BPM) area, Aspect Oriented Business Process Modeling aims to specify how this modularization technique can support encapsulating cross-cutting concerns in process models. However, it is not clear how these models should be supported in the whole BPM lifecycle. In addition, the support for designing these models has only been limited to imperative process models that support rigid business processes.Neither has it been investigated how this modularization technique can be supported through declarative or hybrid models to support the separation of cross-cutting concerns for flexible business processes. Therefore, this thesis investigates how aspect orientation can be supported over the whole BPM lifecycle using imperative aspect-oriented business process models. It also investigates how declarative and hybrid aspect-oriented business process models can support the separation of cross-cutting concerns in the BPM area. This thesis has been carried out following the design science framework, and the result is presented as a set of artifacts (in the form of constructs, models, methods, and instantiations) and empirical findings. The artifacts support modeling, analysis, implementation/configuration, enactment, monitoring, adjustment, and mining cross-cutting concerns while supporting business processes using Business Process Management Systems. Thus, it covers the support for the management of these concerns over the whole BPM lifecycle. The use of these artifacts and their application shows that they can reduce the complexity of process models by separating different concerns.

  • Introducing the Common Non-Functional Ontology
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Enterprise Interoperability II. - London : Springer. - 9781846288579 - 9781846288586 - 9781447171317 ; , s. 633-645
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Enterprise systems interoperability is impeded by the lack of a cohesive, integrated perspective on non-functional aspects (NFA). We propose to respond to the fragmentation in NFA research by supporting a shared, common understanding. For this purpose:- first, we propose a common NFA ontology, which generalizes and integrates the different non-functional aspects under a common top-level ontology. Second, we introduce a series of specialized ontologies on specific non-functional aspects, such as trust, risk, privacy, threat and misuse. By fostering a consensual and shared view of the non-functional aspects domain, we aim to move closer to enhancing semantic enterprise interoperability. This shared perspective on what non-functional aspects are and how they relate to the other 'functional' aspects of enterprise systems, is the key towards enterprise interoperability.

  • Towards Cross Language Process Model Reus : A Language Independent Representation of Process Models
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Practice Of Enterprise Modeling, Proceedings. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 9783642053511 - 9783642053528 ; , s. 176-190
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Process model reuse is becoming a key approach to addressing the challenges of modeling business processes from scratch. A repository is, therefore, essential to store and manage process models for future reuse. In this paper, we develop a logical data model that enables a Universal Process Repository to store process models in the form of process elements, independent of any process modelling language. In order to store process models in the process repository we propose an algorithm that automatically extracts data from the repository and converts them to process models on the fly. Finally, we use a case study to present data stored about a process model in the repository and to illustrate the development of process models from the data stored in the repository.

  • Closing the user-centric service coordination cycle by means of coordination services
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: CAiSE Forum 2010 on Information Systems Evolution. - Berlin, Heidelberg : Springer Berlin Heidelberg. - 3642177212 - 9783642177217 ; , s. 267-282
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the future vision of an Internet of Services, users take an active role in service selection and composition. In this context, web services are mostly interfaces to real services and can be classified as coordination services with respect to the latter. To enable users to perform service composition, the effect of the coordination services must be described in such a way that users are not only able to discover services but also to detect and prevent possible conflicts in their composition. To meet these requirements, a service description language for coordination services is proposed based on the REA business ontology.

  • A business process metadata model for a process model repository
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Enterprise, Business-Process and Information Systems Modeling. - Berlin : Springer Berlin/Heidelberg. - 9783642130519 - 9783642130502 ; , s. 287-300
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Today reuse of business process models is becoming increasingly important. One of the proven solutions for reusing business process models is the use of repositories. Repositories should have process models and process metadata that can help users in searching, understanding, and interpreting process models. The purpose of this paper is to propose a Business Process Metadata Model (BPMM) that would facilitate a) locating process models, b) understanding and/or interpreting process models, and c) navigating a process model repository. In order to evaluate the BPMM, an empirical study is conducted to measure consistency and correctness of annotating business processes by using BPMM.

  • From contest to market entry : A longitudinal survey of innovation barriers constraining open data service development
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: ECIS 2015 Completed Research Papers. - : Association for Information Systems. - 9783000502842
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Open data services have emerged as a research field. One important area of investigation within this field is exploration into how sustainable open data markets are created. Contests have become a popular method to propel and catalyse open data service development providing services to such markets. Recent research has identified numerous innovation barriers hampering development adjacent to the contest in developers' effort to transform contest contributions to viable digital services based on open data. Little is however known about what innovation barriers over time constrain the post-contest process to transform initial innovations to finalized open data services ready for market entry. This paper presents a longitudinal survey of innovation barriers constraining teams performing open data service development after an innovation contest. The survey provides insights into 1) 24 innovation barriers constraining development, 2) a comparison of barrier importance based on team progress, and 3) a conceptualisation of phases structuring the process from contests to market entry, stipulating different innovation barriers impact open data service development. The results contribute to the understanding of how sustainable open data markets emerge and serve as a starting point for investigating how different stakeholders can manage innovation barriers constraining open data service development.

  • Design Support for e-Commerce Information Systems using Goal, Business and Process Modelling
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Enterprises use various models to find design solutions to their e-Commerce information systems. Goal, business and process models are parts of a chain of models used for this purpose. Business modelling requires structured methods to support design and traceability. Process modelling also needs structured methods to manage design complexity, traceability and flexibility. The thesis proposes several artifacts to address these challenges.  It proposes a method to design business models from goal models. We start by analyzing strategic goals and express goal model notions using business notions. A set of guidelines is proposed to design a business model. The method provides structured business model design and traceability of the decisions from business to strategic level. The thesis also discusses a set of mappings to relate goal modelling language constructs to process modelling notions. We use BMM, i* and KAOS for goal modelling. The mappings are used to identify how these techniques can support process design. In addition, a set of mappings is proposed to relate business modelling language constructs to process modelling notions. We use the e3value model for business modelling. Based on these mappings a number of activities are identified to structure process activities from a business viewpoint. We also propose a method to design process models using goal and business models as inputs. As a bridge between two input models and a process model, the notion of an activity dependency model is introduced. The transitions between models are performed by using guidelines. The method provides structured process model design, flexibility for process models and traceability of the decisions from operational to strategic and business levels. These artifacts can be used for designing enterprise business and process models. We follow the design science research method used in information systems research. The evaluation builds on scenarios, implementations and a literature review.

  • Resource Analysis and Classification for Purpose Driven Value Model Design
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Information System Modeling and Design. - : IGI Global. - 1947-8186 .- 1947-8194. ; 1:1, s. 56-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Business and IT systems are today facing an ever more complex environment characterised by openness, variety, and change. In order to cope with this environmental complexity, organisations need effective instruments for managing their knowledge. Essential among these instruments are enterprise models, i.e. computational representations of the structure, processes, information, resources, and goals of organisations. When using enterprise modeling for analysing and designing business scenarios and networks, the reasoning should not start from business processes and activities but from notions at a higher level of abstraction. This can be done by focusing on the business motivation behind processes and expressing it in value models, i.e. models focusing on high level and business oriented objects like resources, actors, resource conversions, and resource exchanges. The declarative orientation of value models make them attractive for a number of different purposes, including profitability analysis, marketing analysis, process design, and service analysis. As value models can be used for many different purposes, there is a risk that they will become overloaded, complex, and difficult to understand. Therefore, when designing a value model, its purpose should be explicitly stated in order to focus the analysis. The goal of this article is to show how the purpose of a value model should influence its design. The approach builds on an analysis and classification of resources, resource conversions, and resource exchanges.
