- The sculpture EP9 Starlight Reserves was installed in Amerikadammen in Göteborgs Botaniska Trädgård and part of GIBCA Extended 2023. This work is situated in the expanded field of sculpture, where the negotiation with a specific situation plays a central role in material investigations of environmental and sustainability concerns. The shape and title of the sculpture derive from the container of old batteries, "Exposed Pallet 9," which the International Space Station launched into space in 2021 to circulate around the Earth for 2-4 years before entering the Earth's atmosphere and hopefully burn up. [1] Commercial interests, colonization, and tourism led by rich nations and private companies contribute to the increase of space debris. The main inquiry of this research project is how artistic work, through visualization in sculptural form, can draw attention to scientific observations and advocacy in establishing international environmental space law concerning space debris. By using recycled plastic from electronic scrap for the large-scale IRBAM printing of the sculpture, the work highlights the potential for sustainable and ephemeral materials in sculptural production to promote environmental awareness and question the validity of the standard requirement for "permanence" in public sculpture. 3D printing in collaboration with Samuel Johansson and Woodrow Wiest RISE – AM center in Mölndal, Sweden with in-kind funding. - Med utställningen Människan i skogen, skogen i människan vill projektet belysa ett antal aktuella och viktiga frågor för vår region och samtid, samlade under ett tema: skog och hållbar utveckling. I utställningen får besökaren möta kunskap och perspektiv från fem forskare och forskargrupper vid Mittuniversitetet. Forskarna är verksamma inom biologi, ekoteknik, historia, litteraturvetenskap respektive turismvetenskap. Forskningens olika perspektiv länkas i utställningen samman genom sina förhållningssätt till tid, såsom avgörande för förståelse, kunskap och handling. De olika forskningsinriktningarna visar också fram spänningar mellan olika synsätt på skog och kan tillsammans ge flera svar och berättelser om skogens värden. En arbetsgrupp vid Universitetsbiblioteket står för gestaltning och produktion av utställningen.

Computing the fewest-turn map directions based on the connectivity of natural roads

- In this paper, we introduced a novel approach to computing the fewest-turn map directions or routes based on the concept of natural roads. Natural roads are joined road segments that perceptually constitute good continuity. This approach relies on the connectivity of natural roads rather than that of road segments for computing routes or map directions. Because of this, the derived routes posses the fewest turns. However, what we intend to achieve are the routes that not only possess the fewest turns, but are also as short as possible. This kind of map direction is more effective and favorable by people, because they bear less cognitive burden. Furthermore, the computation of the routes is more efficient, since it is based on the graph encoding the connectivity of roads, which is significantly smaller than the graph of road segments. We made experiments applied to eight urban street networks from North America and Europe in order to illustrate the above stated advantages. The experimental results indicate that the fewest-turn routes posses fewer turns and shorter distances than the simplest paths and the routes provided by Google Maps. For example, the fewest-turn-and-shortest routes are on average 15% shorter than the routes suggested by Google Maps, while the number of turns is just half as much. This approach is a key technology behind FromToMap.org - a web mapping service using openstreetmap data.

- Kalkylator för beräkning av koldioxidavtryck av filmproduktion, av Karin Lagercrantz, under överseende av Anna Björklund, som del av Lina Perssons konstnärliga forskningsprojekt KLIMATRÄTTVIST VÄRLDANDE vid Stockholms konstnärliga högskola. Finansierat av Vetenskapsrådet och NAVET.Kalkylatorn programmerades efter noggrann livscykelanalys (LCA) av Lina Perssons forskningsaktiviteter samt studenters examensfilmer vid film och mediainstitutionen. Metodrapporten finns på dokumentets sista sida.Syftet var att öka förståelsen för klimatavtrycket av filmproduktionens olika delar och ge konkreta verktyg för att transformera filmproduktioner och dess konstnärliga processer till mer hållbara. Målet är att verktygen skall användas i SKH’s undervisning och av aktörer i filmbranschen och det konstnärliga fältet.

Automatic generation of the axial lines of urban environments to capture what we perceive

- Based on the concepts of isovists and medial axes, we developed a set of algorithms that can automatically generate axial lines for representing individual linearly stretched parts of open space of an urban environment. Open space is the space between buildings, where people can freely move around. The generation of the axial lines has been a key aspect of space syntax research, conventionally relying on hand-drawn axial lines of an urban environment, often called axial map, for urban morphological analysis. Although various attempts have been made towards an automatic solution, few of them can produce the axial map that consists of the least number of longest visibility lines, and none of them really works for different urban environments. Our algorithms provide a better solution than existing ones. Throughout this paper, we have also argued and demonstrated that the axial lines constitute a true skeleton, superior to medial axes, in capturing what we perceive about the urban environment.

- The two sculptures in the exhibition encompasses, discarded materials from the Arktikum Science Centre, the HDK-Valand Academy of Art and Design workshops and the Gothenburg Opera. The sculpture ”We are taking great pains to make sure there’s not an orbital debris issue” includes images from her collaborations with the artificial intelligence bot Midjourney, based upon the Elon Musk statement which is also the title of the work [1] regarding the SpaceX expansion. In my artistic research practice I explore questions of ownership and responsibility for the (light) pollution caused by colonization, space tourism and commercial space tech companies. Led by wealthy nations and private companies, this reflects the colonization of the Earth whose negative impact on the environment and cultures we have yet to come to terms with. It is estimated that there is already more than 200 000 kg of artificial material on the Moon, and the number of large pieces of debris in space is about 20 000. The starry sky we look upon nowadays is actually scattered with artificial lights which impossible for the bare eye to tell the difference. The sculpture ”Sipping Cosmic Latte in the Milky Way, waiting for The Big Crunch” is a reference to the color of the Universe as defined by scientists Karl Glazebrook and Ivan Baldry, named Cosmic Latte for its creamy yellowish white hue. The Big Crunch is a hypothetical scenario for the ultimate fate of the universe, in which the expansion of the universe eventually reverses and the universe recollapses. - En geopark är ett område med geologi av internationell betydelse – alltså något som är unikt i världen. Inom geoparken arbetar vi aktivt för att sprida kunskap om geologi och sambanden mellan geologi, biologi och kulturhistoria till barn och unga. Platåbergens Geopark är ett samverkansprojekt mellan de nio kommunerna Trollhättan, Vänersborg, Grästorp, Lidköping, Skara, Götene, Mariestad, Skövde och Falköping. Grästorps kommun är projektägare. Under hösten 2019 lämnas en ansökan in till Unesco, om att bli en Unesco Global Geopark. Serietidningen Trollberg är ett samarbete mellan Platåbergens Geopark och projektet KASTiS – Kulturarv och spelteknologi i Skaraborg. KASTiS finansieras av Skaraborgs kommunalförbund och Högskolan i Skövde. New applications of 3D modeling in artefact analysis : three case studies in Viking Age brooches

- Three-dimensional (3D) laser scanning is a nondestructive and versatile technique that provides archaeologists with 3D models of archaeological and ethnographic objects. We have previously shown that 3D models facilitate shape analysis of archaeological bones and stone tools, due to the high measurement accuracy inherent in the latest generation of 3D laser scanners. Here, we explore the utility of 3D modeling as a tool for analyzing Viking Age metal artefacts with complex morphologies. Four highly ornate Viking Age brooches from Scandinavia and Russia were digitized with a portable laser scanner, and the resulting 3D models were used in three case studies of (a) artefact reconstruction, (b) tool mark analysis, and (c) motif documentation. The results revealed both strengths and limitations of the employed techniques. 3D modeling proved to be very well suited for artefact reconstruction and was helpful also in the stylistic and motif analysis. The tool mark analysis was only partially successful, due to the resolution limits of the laser scanner used. 3D-based motif analysis of a grandiose Scandinavian-style brooch from Yelets, Russia, identified an anthropomorphic figure with a bird-like body that previously has been overlooked. This figure may be a Rurikid coat of arms, possibly linking the object to a princely household and providing further evidence for a connection between Scandinavia and the Rurikids. As 3D technology keeps improving, we expect that additional applications for 3D modeling in archaeology will be developed, likely leading to many new findings when old objects are re-analyzed with modern techniques. However, our results indicate that 3D modeling cannot completely replace traditional artefact analysis—instead, we argue that the two approaches are best used in combination.

- En värld bestämd av ett fåtal urämnen – jord, vatten, eld och luft? Med idén om de fyra elementen förklarade antikens människa ett kosmos styrt av gudarnas nyckfullhet. En kosmologisk väv som senare separerades i sinnligt och andligt, fysiskt och metafysiskt. Hur påverkar eld och människors föreställningar om eld verkligheten idag? Från rening, passion och kärlekens låga till förstörelse, offerriter och transformation. Människors föreställningar om eld är många. I mytologin brinner Fågel Fenix upp och återföds ur egen aska, och Prometheus stjäl gudarnas eld och ger till människorna som i sin tur får kunskap och makt. Människor värmer sig och bränner sig genom historien, från att laga mat över elden till att smälta metaller till vapen, från egna eldstäder till svårsläckta bränder i klimatförändringarnas tid. Följ med på en eldexkursion från idéernas historia till vetenskapens och konstens samtid.Duo Granmo/Berg utforskar begreppet eld utifrån det musikaliska perspektivet samt diskuterar och samtalar med en inbjuden skara specialister från olika områden.

Managing knowledge sharing of extreme weather induced impacts on land transport infrastructure : Case study of the Swedish Transport Administration

- Extreme weather events and effects of climate change are threats to the transport sector’s functionality and safety. Risk management in this context implies a necessity to focus on the connection between near-term experiences and coping strategies on one hand, and long-term adaptation analyses on the other. How learning from past events and subsequent knowledge sharing can be adopted is a question that needs to be explored, discussed and tested. A systematic approach to lessons learned calls for measures of investigation, reporting, planning, implementation and evaluation. A qualitative case study approach was used in this thesis. In the first paper the practices of accident investigation in operation and maintenance were inventoried within the Swedish Transport Administration (STA). Three accident investigation methods were applied and tested on a cloudburst event, causing flooding in a railway tunnel in Sweden. In the second paper, semi-structured interviews, documents, and archival records were used as means for penetrating deeper into the attitudes and understanding of lessons learned concerning extreme weather events within a procured public-private partnership. The results of the two studies showed weak signals of feedback on lessons learned. Partly, these weak signals could be traced back to weak steering signals. Various obstacles impeded learning curves from lessons learned. The obstacles were of both hard and soft values, e.g. resources in time and equipment, systematic investigation methods, incentives for lessons learned, education and knowledge, values, norms and attitudes towards how and why identified problems should be solved. Successful knowledge sharing requires that close attention is paid to such obstacles and that an adaptive approach is adopted.
