  • Detection of trace organic compounds by Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction: application to the evolution of the organic composition of hydrothermal fluids from the Rainbow site (36°N, Mid-Atlantic Ridge) over 3 years
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The question of the abiogenic oil has been discussed and hydrothermal reactions have been suggested to abiotically generate hydrocarbons. Besides, ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal systems have been regarded as favourable environment for the emergence of life. Therefore, it is of great importance to investigate the presence of organic compounds in hydrothermal fluids. However, because of the sampling difficulties, the complexity of the matrix, the numerous interferences and the assumed trace level concentrations; it was considered a real challenge. Here we show that Stir Bar Sorptive Extraction (SBSE) coupled to Thermal Desorption – Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry (TD-GC-MS) can be successfully applied to analyses of volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds in hydrothermal fluids. The method exhibited excellent reproducibility and conditioned samples appeared to be really stable for up to 3 years. This innovative and versatile technique was used to study the fluids from the ultramafic-hosted hydrothermal field Rainbow located at 36°14’N on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). Despite relative stability for mineral composition and gas content is observed, analyses of fluids samples from 2005, 2007 and 2008 revealed more distinct organic compositions. In addition, results suggest the similarity of the organic content of the fluids regardless of the sampling location within the field, which may indicates the presence of a single reaction zone and that no further chemical reactions occur while fluids are transported to the seafloor.

  • Effects of the co-disposal of lignite fly ash and coal mine waste rocks on AMD and leachate quality
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Lignite fly ash (FA) and waste rocks (WRs) were mixed in three different ratios (1:1, 1:3 and 1:5) and studied to compare the effects of adding FA on AMD generation from coal mining WRs, leachability of elements and the potential occurrence of secondary minerals. FA mixed with WRs showed significant differences in pH levels compared to previous research. The 1:1 mixture performed best of all the three mixtures in terms of pH and leachability of elements, mainly due to the higher proportion of FA in the mixture. The pH in the 1:1 mixtures varied between 3.3 – 5.1 compared to other mixtures (2.3 – 3.5). Iron and SO42- leached considerably less from the 1:1 mixture compared to the others, indicating that the oxidation of sulphides was weaker in this mixture. Aluminium leached to a high degree from all mixtures, with concentrations varying from mg L-1–g L-1. The reason behind this increase is probably the addition of FA which, due to acidic conditions and the composition of the FA, increases the availability of Al. For the same reason, high concentrations of Mn and Zn were also measured. Geochemical modelling indicates that the 1:1 mixture performs better in terms of precipitation of Al3+ minerals, whereas Fe3+ minerals precipitated more in mixtures containing less FA. These results suggest that, with time, the pores could possibly be filled with these secondary minerals and sulphate salts (followed by a decrease in sulphide oxidation), improving the pore water pH and decreasing the leachability of elements. Since grain size plays a crucial role in the reactivity of sulphides, there is a risk that the results from the leaching tests may have been influenced by crushing and milling of the WR samples.

  • Radioisotope and metal content in a Lake Nakuru sediment core – accumulation rate and 3  inventories
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The Nakuru environment is a hot spot both for human population and for biological conservation with a large number of species protected in the well visited Lake Nakuru  National Park. Reoccurring mass die-off of the Lesser Flamingo in Lake Nakuru as well as  cases of intoxication of humans within the water catchment area have gained attention and dedicated a significant amount of research over the recent decades. The toxicological histories of natural and anthropogenic activities are reflected by accumulated compounds in the water body sediments. In this study, a sediment core obtained from the central and deepest point of Lake Nakuru was sliced with 5 mm resolution and analyzed with the 210Pb dating method. The results show a linear accumulation rate of 1.3 mm y-1 and a mass accumulation rate of 0.027 g cm-2 y-1. Further analysis resulted in core profiles of organic material decay, phosphorus concentration gradient and total content of heavy metals in the lake water and in the sediment. In addition, analysis of 226Ra, 137Cs, 239+240Pu, 228Th/232Th was performed.

  • Inputs of Mercury, Cadmium and Lead via Water and Air to the OSPAR Maritime Area
  • 2022
  • Annan publikation (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Total inputs of the heavy metals mercury, cadmium and lead have reduced since 1990. However, improved analytical procedures for mercury and cadmium since 1990 make it difficult to be certain what proportion of observed changes are due to reduced discharges and emissions.

  • Inputs of Nutrients to the OSPAR Maritime Area
  • 2022
  • Annan publikation (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Since the QSR 2010, nitrogen and phosphorus inputs to the OSPAR Maritime Area have continued to decrease. Waterborne inputs to the Arctic Waters (Region I) increased substantially however, but the nitrogen increase is masked by a larger decrease in atmospheric deposition. Substantial reductions in inputs to the North Sea have been achieved
