  • Vector-valued Eisenstein series of congruence types and their products
  • 2019
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Historically, Kohnen and Zagier connected modular forms with period polynomials, and as a consequence of this association concluded that the products of at most two Eisenstein series span all spaces of classical modular forms of level 1. Later Borisov and Gunnells among other authors extended the result to higher levels. We consider this problem for vector-valued modular forms, establish the framework of congruence types and obtain the structure of the space of vector-valued Eisenstein series using tools from representation theory. Based on this development and historic results, we show that the space of vector-valued modular forms of certain weights and any congruence type can be spanned by the invariant vectors of that type tensor at most two Eisenstein series.

  • Grafisk och algebraisk representation : Gymnasieelevers förståelse av linjära funktioner
  • 2016
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis concerns upper secondary students’ understanding of algebraic and graphic representation of linear functions. Components of the students’ concept images, so-called ‘concept elements’, were studied as a way to capture their understanding. Four aspects affect the graphical view of a linear function, namely the parameter k, the parameter m, the scale of the coordinate axes and the domain of the function. Concerning the scale of the coordinate axis, there is a need to distinguish between two kinds of slope. When the scale of x-axis is changed, the k-value of the function, the so-called analytic slope, is constant but the visual slope changes. The tasks were designed so that three aspects were held constant in each task and one was varied. The study is qualitative and consists of two sub- studies. In the first, six students worked with two tasks involving the parameters k and m in the dynamic software GeoGebra. In the second, eight students were interviewed about a task concerning functions with different domains. Both studies also involved a task concerning the aspect of slope in a non-homogeneous coordinate system (a system with different scales on the axes). The results indicate three main findings: Firstly, students displayed difficulties in distinguishing between analytic and visual slope. Secondly, the word ‘start value’ can lead to conceptual problems when there is no visible intercept between the graphical representation of the function and the y-axis. Thirdly, the students displayed almost no concept elements in relation to the domain of a function.

  • Generalized Vandermonde matrices and determinants in electromagnetic compatibility
  • 2017
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Matrices whose rows (or columns) consists of monomials of sequential powers are called Vandermonde matrices and can be used to describe several useful concepts and have properties that can be helpful for solving many kinds of problems. In this thesis we will discuss this matrix and some of its properties as well as a generalization of it and how it can be applied to curve fitting discharge current for the purpose of ensuring electromagnetic compatibility. In the first chapter the basic theory for later chapters is introduced. This includes the Vandermonde matrix and some of its properties, history, applications and generalizations, interpolation and regression problems, optimal experiment design and modelling of electrostatic discharge currents with the purpose to ensure electromagnetic compatibility. The second chapter focuses on finding the extreme points for the determinant for the Vandermonde matrix on various surfaces including spheres, ellipsoids, cylinders and tori. The extreme points are analysed in three dimensions or more. The third chapter discusses fitting a particular model called the p-peaked Analytically Extended Function (AEF) to data taken either from a standard for electromagnetic compatibility or experimental measurements. More specifically the AEF will be fitted to discharge currents from the IEC 62305-1 and IEC 61000-4-2 standards for lightning protection and electrostatic discharge immunity as well as some experimentally measured data of similar phenomena.

  • High achiever! Always a high achiever? : A comparison of student achievements on mathematical tests with different aims and goals
  • 2014
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study explored changes in relative achievement over time. It also investigated differences in how two groups of students activate mathematical competencies. The aim of the study was to investigate students’ relative achievement in mathematics over time, and how mathematical competencies can be used to explore differences between groups of students on a non-curriculum based test in mathematics. The study was divided in two parts. Study 1 compared students’ (n=568) relative achievement in two national tests in mathematics (years 3 and 6). Study 1 explored changes in relative achievement between the two national tests as well as differences in relative achievement between the national test in year 6 and the mathematical kangaroo in year 7 (age 13). The study identified, from a sample (n=264) of study 1, two groups of students with high achievements in only one of the tests, the national test in year 6 or the mathematical kangaroo. Study 2 explored how differences between those students relative achievement on the mathematical kangaroo could be explained through activation of mathematical competencies. The results in study 1 show that students undergo large changes, both increases and decreases, in relative achievement between the national tests in years 3 and 6. Study 2 shows how the two identified groups activate the mathematical competencies differently on the mathematical kangaroo. 9% of the students achieve highly in the mathematical kangaroo although they do not in the national test. The study implicates the importance of using non-curriculum bounded tests to identify strength in mathematical competencies among students that not are able to show them through the national test.

  • Mathematical Reasoning in Physics Tests : Requirements, Relations, Dependence
  • 2013
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • By analysing and expanding upon mathematical reasoning requirements in physics tests, this licentiate thesis aims to contribute to the research studying how students’ knowledge in mathematics influence their learning of physics. A sample of physics tests from the Swedish National Test Bank in Physics was used as data, together with information of upper secondary students’ scores and grades on the tests. First it was decided whether the tasks in the tests required mathematical reasoning at all and if they did, that reasoning was characterised. Further, the relation between students’ grades and mathematical reasoning requirements was examined. Another aim in this thesis is to try out if the Mantel-Haenszel procedure is an appropriate statistical method to answer questions about if there is a dependence between students’ success on different physics tasks requiring different kinds of mathematical reasoning. The results show that 75% of the tasks in the physics tests require mathematical reasoning and that it is impossible to pass six out of eight tests without mathematical reasoning. It is also revealed that it is uncommon that a student gets a higher grade than Pass without solving tasks that require the student to come up with not already familiar solutions. It is concluded that the Mantel-Haenszel procedure is sensitive to the number of students each teacher accounts for. If there are not too few students, the procedure can be used. The outcome indicates that there is a dependence between success on tasks requiring different kinds of reasoning. It is more likely that a student manages to solve a task that requires the produce of new reasoning if the student has solved a task that is familiar from before.

  • Clarkson type inequalities and geometric properties of banach spaces
  • 1999
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this thesis Clarkson's inequalities and their generalizations are the main tools. The technique that can be used to prove Clarkson type inequalities in more dimensions is shown. We also establish Clarkson type inequalities in general Banach spaces and point out the connections between Clarkson's inequalities and the concept of type and cotype. The classical results on the von Neumann-Jordan constant, closely related to Clarkson's inequalities, are shortly presented. The concepts of moduli of convexity and smoothness, which are connected with the geometry of Banach spaces, are discussed. Some equivalent ways of describing modulus of convexity and some properties of this function are formulated. The estimation of the modulus of convexity for L(p)-spaces is presented as well. Finally, several examples of moduli of convexity and smoothness for different spaces are described.

  • Exploring processes and resources for problem solving at the crossroads between chemistry and mathematics
  • 2024
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Problem solving at the crossroads between chemistry and mathematics presents significant challenges for students at all levels of education. This licentiate thesis aims to enhance our understanding of such problem solving, with a focus on how university students approach problems in the context of chemical kinetics. The thesis is based on two papers. The video data analysed in these papers were collected from problem-solving sessions where second-year chemistry students worked in pairs to solve tasks centred around a key concept in chemical kinetics. The first paper aimed to develop a framework suitable for analysing problem solving at the interface of chemistry and mathematics. Deductive and inductive analysis of the collected video data resulted in the extended mathematical modelling cycle (MMC). This empirically derived framework offers a fine-grained picture of the processes and resources at play during problem solving in chemical kinetics, suggesting that students: (1) engage in a range of (sub)processes beyond those typically outlined in the classical MMC; and (2) employ extra-mathematical resources (EMRs) in all stages of the MMC. The EMRs can be divided into chemical and other resources. While chemical resources are essential in translating chemical information into mathematical relationships, they also play a crucial role during mathematical work, offering guidance to the mathematical operations. The purpose of the second paper was to further characterise the nature and roles of other resources. Findings suggest that other resources can be divided into: implicit models of results, explicit examples from experience, and superficial procedural resources. Analysing their roles in problem solving revealed that implicit models primarily influence students’ ideas of where they are going, while explicit examples and superficial procedural resources provide a basis of strategies for how to get there.

  • Embedding Theorems for Mixed Norm Spaces and Applications
  • 2008
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis is devoted to the study of mixed norm spaces that arise in connection with embeddings of Sobolev and Besov type spaces. The work in this direction originates in a paper due to Gagliardo (1958), and was continued by Fournier (1988) and by Kolyada (2005). We consider fully anisotropic mixed norm spaces. Our main theorem states an embedding of these spaces into Lorentz spaces. Applying this result, we obtain sharp embedding theorems for anisotropic fractional Sobolev spaces and anisotropic Sobolev-Besov spaces. The methods used are based on non-increasing rearrangements and on estimates of sections of functions and sections of sets. We also study limiting relations between embeddings of spaces of different type. More exactly, mixed norm estimates enable us to get embedding constants with sharp asymptotic behaviour. This gives an extension of the results obtained for isotropic Besov spaces $B_p^\alpha$ by Bourgain, Brezis, and Mironescu, and for Besov spaces $B^{\alpha_1,\dots,\alpha_n}_p$ by Kolyada. We study also some basic properties (in particular the approximation properties) of special weak type spaces that play an important role in the construction of mixed norm spaces and in the description of Sobolev type embeddings.
