  • Brodie vs Hummers graphite oxides for preparation of multi-layered materials

    • Graphite oxides synthesized by one and two step Brodie oxidation (BGO) and Hummers (HGO) methods were analyzed by a variety of characterization methods in order to evaluate the reasons behind the difference in their properties. It is found that the Brodie method results in a higher relative amount of hydroxyl groups and a more homogeneous overall distribution of functional groups over the planar surface of the graphene oxide flakes. The higher number of carbonyl and carboxyl groups in HGO, detected by several methods, including XPS, NMR and FTIR, unavoidably results in defects of the graphene "skeleton", holes and overall disruption of the carbon-carbon bond network, stronger deviation from planar flake shape and poor ordering of the graphene oxide layers. It is also suggested that functional groups in HGO are less homogeneously distributed over the flake surface, forming some nanometer-sized graphene areas. The presence of differently oxidized areas on the GO surface results in inhomogeneous solvation and hydration of HGO and effects of inter- and intra-stratification. The proposed interpretation of the data explains the higher mechanical strength of multi-layered BGO membranes/papers, which are also less affected by humidity changes, thus providing an example of a membrane property superior to that of HGO.   • Localised modifications of anatase TiO2 thin films by a Focused Ion Beam

    • A Focused Ion Beam (FIB) has been used to implant micrometer-sized areas of polycrystalline anatase TiO2 thin films with Ga+ ions using fluencies from 10(15) to 10(17) ions/cm(2). The evolution of the surface morphology was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). In addition, the chemical modifications of the surface were followed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The implanted areas show a noticeable change in surface morphology as compared to the as-deposited surface. The surface loses its grainy morphology to gradually become a smooth surface with a RMS roughness of less than 1 nm for the highest ion fluence used. The surface recession or depth of the irradiated area increases with ion fluence, but the rate with which the depth increases changes at around 5 x 10(16) ions/cm(2). Comparison with implantation of a pre-irradiated surface indicates that the initial surface morphology may have a large effect on the surface recession rate. Detailed analysis of the XPS spectra shows that the oxidation state of Ti and O apparently does not change, whereas the implanted gallium exists in an oxidation state related to Ga2O3.

  • CLOSELY-LOCATED MIMO ANTENNAS OF TRI-BAND FOR WLAN MOBILE TERMINAL APPLICATIONS

    • A closely-located MIMO antennas of tri-band with an inter-PIFA (Planner Inverted-F Antenna) spacing of only 20mm is proposed for WLAN mobile terminal applications. Two L-shaped slots etched on each PIFA are introduced appropriately to achieve high isolation at higher frequencies and tri-band property. The MIMO antenna can operate in the bands of 2.4-2.4812 GHz, 5.07-5.4 GHz and 5.64-6.61 GHz, and the mutual couplings are less than -16.5 dB, -27 dB and -23 dB, respectively. Radiation pattern, gain and efficiency are also measured. Our designed antenna has the advantages of closely-located structure, tri-band, high isolation, small variation of gain and high efficiency.

  • Near-Complete Photon Spin Selectivity in a Metasurface of Anisotropic Plasmonic Antennas

    • Simple chiroptically active metamaterials are difficult to realize in practice but could pave the way for a range of important applications, such as sensitive optical biosensors, asymmetric catalysis, and novel polarization manipulation devices. We show that a metasurface based on a random arrangement of anisotropic but aligned gold nanoparticles can exhibit an almost perfect selectivity towards incident photon spin for evanescent excitation with visible to near-infrared light. The experimentally attained reflection contrast between left- and right-handed circularly polarized light peaks at similar to 90%, in excellent agreement with analytical theory. These results are important for the development of future photonic and plasmonic polarization-based technologies.

  • Charge transfer in alkali-metal-doped polymeric fullerenes

    • We present room-temperature Raman measurements of pressure-polymerized C60 and compare them with the spectra of RbC60 in the orthorhombic phase. Although both materials were prepared according to two completely different routes the spectra show a surprising similarity with respect to mode positions and line splitting. We concluded from this that both materials, the uncharged pressure-polymerized C60 and the rubidium-doped orthorhombic compound, have the same overall structure and the AC60 compounds can be considered as the doped species of the C60, polymerized using moderate low pressure and high temperatures. From a detailed comparison between both spectra mode shifting and line broadening as a consequence of the charge transfer was determined and electron-phonon coupling constants were estimated for the high-frequency Hg(7) and Hg(8) modes. The low values for the coupling constants compared to the ones in the K3C60 can explain the lack of superconductivity in the AC60 compounds.

    • Measurements of nuclear properties of some neutron-rich asymmetric fission isotopes at an ISOL laboratory present a severe problem when a plasma ion source is used as the primary ion-source. The problem is associated with intense multi-charged symmetric fission contaminants that cannot be mass-separated from asymmetric fission products. In this work we demonstrate how this problem can be overcome on-line by using an electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS) as a charge-breeding secondary ion-source. Mixed Ar+/Kr2+/Xe3+ radioactive beams from an plasma ion-source were injected into the PHOENIX ECRIS that currently is installed at the ISOLDE facility at CERN in order to improve the ratio of Ar to the background contaminants of Kr and Xe. The signal to noise ratio was improved by more than two orders of magnitude after charge-breeding and mass-separation of the Ar8+, Ar9+ beams. The information on the decay of the Ar-48 nucleus obtained in these tests is useful for a better understanding of the origin of the Ca-48/Ca-46 meteorite isotopic anomaly. Potential applications of the method are discussed.

  • Physical requirements for scaling up network-based biocomputation

    • The high energy consumption of electronic data processors, together with physical challenges limiting their further improvement, has triggered intensive interest in alternative computation paradigms. Here we focus on network-based biocomputation (NBC), a massively parallel approach where computational problems are encoded in planar networks implemented with nanoscale channels. These networks are explored by biological agents, such as biological molecular motor systems and bacteria, benefitting from their energy efficiency and availability in large numbers. We analyse and define the fundamental requirements that need to be fulfilled to scale up NBC computers to become a viable technology that can solve large NP-complete problem instances faster or with less energy consumption than electronic computers. Our work can serve as a guide for further efforts to contribute to elements of future NBC devices, and as the theoretical basis for a detailed NBC roadmap.

  • Determining and Optimizing the Current and Magnetic Field Dependence of Spin-Torque and Spin Hall Nano-Oscillators : Toward Next-Generation Nanoelectronic Devices and Systems

    • Spin-torque and spin Hall nano-oscillators are nanoscale devices (about 100 nm) capable of producing tunable broadband high-frequency microwave signals ranging from 0.1 GHz to over 65 GHz that several research groups trying to reach up to 200 - 300 GHz. Their development is ongoing for applications in high-frequency nanoelectronic devices and systems, such as mobile phones, wireless networks, base stations, vehicle radars, and even medical applications.This thesis covers a wide range of characterizations of spin-torque and spin Hall nano-oscillator devices that aim to investigate their current and magnetic field dependency, as well as to suggest improvements in these devices to optimize their application in spintronics and magnonics. The work is primarily based on experimental methods for characterizing these devices by building up new measurement systems, but it also includes numerical and micromagnetic simulations.Experimental techniques: In order to characterize the fabricated nanodevices in a detailed and accurate manner through their electrical and microwave responses, new measurement systems capable of full 3D control over the external magnetic fields will be described. In addition, a new method of probing an operational device using magnetic force microscopy (MFM) will be presented.Spin-torque nano-oscillators: We will describe remarkable improvements in the performance of spin-torque nano-oscillators (STNOs) that enhance their integration capability with applications in microwave systems. In nanocontact (NC-)STNOs made from a conventional spin-valve stack, though with thicker bottom electrodes, it is found the auto-oscillations can be excited with higher frequencies at lower threshold currents, and with higher output powers. We also find that this idea is useful for tuning spin-wave resonance and also controlling the thermal budget. Furthermore, a detailed study of magnetic droplet solitons and spin-wave dynamics in NC-STNOs will be described. Finally, we demonstrate ultra-high frequency tunability in low-current STNOs based on perpendicular magnetic tunnel junctions(p-MTJs).Spin Hall nano-oscillators: Characterizations of spin Hall nano-oscillator(SHNO) devices based on different structures and materials with both conventional and novel methods will be described. A detailed study of the current, temperature, and magnetic field profiles of nanogap SHNOs will be presented. In addition, we show the current and magnetic field dependence of nanoconstriction-based SHNOs.Moreover, it is shown that multiple SHNOs can be serially synchronized, thereby increasing their output power and enhancing the usage of these devices in applications such as neuromorphic computing. We show synchronization of multiple nanoconstriction SHNOs in the presence of a low in-plane magnetic field. Finally, there is a demonstration of the results of a novel method for probing an operationalSHNO using MFM.

    • A fully instrumented slice of the ATLAS detector was exposed to test beams from the SPS (Super Proton Synchrotron) at CERN in 2004. In this paper, the results of the measurements of the response of the barrel calorimeter to hadrons with energies in the range 20-350 GeV and beam impact points and angles corresponding to pseudo-rapidity values in the range 0.2-0.65 are reported. The results are compared to the predictions of a simulation program using the Geant 4 toolkit. (C) 2010 Published by Elsevier B.V.
