  • Vector-valued Eisenstein series of congruence types and their products
  • 2019
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Historically, Kohnen and Zagier connected modular forms with period polynomials, and as a consequence of this association concluded that the products of at most two Eisenstein series span all spaces of classical modular forms of level 1. Later Borisov and Gunnells among other authors extended the result to higher levels. We consider this problem for vector-valued modular forms, establish the framework of congruence types and obtain the structure of the space of vector-valued Eisenstein series using tools from representation theory. Based on this development and historic results, we show that the space of vector-valued modular forms of certain weights and any congruence type can be spanned by the invariant vectors of that type tensor at most two Eisenstein series.

  • Generalized Vandermonde matrices and determinants in electromagnetic compatibility
  • 2017
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Matrices whose rows (or columns) consists of monomials of sequential powers are called Vandermonde matrices and can be used to describe several useful concepts and have properties that can be helpful for solving many kinds of problems. In this thesis we will discuss this matrix and some of its properties as well as a generalization of it and how it can be applied to curve fitting discharge current for the purpose of ensuring electromagnetic compatibility. In the first chapter the basic theory for later chapters is introduced. This includes the Vandermonde matrix and some of its properties, history, applications and generalizations, interpolation and regression problems, optimal experiment design and modelling of electrostatic discharge currents with the purpose to ensure electromagnetic compatibility. The second chapter focuses on finding the extreme points for the determinant for the Vandermonde matrix on various surfaces including spheres, ellipsoids, cylinders and tori. The extreme points are analysed in three dimensions or more. The third chapter discusses fitting a particular model called the p-peaked Analytically Extended Function (AEF) to data taken either from a standard for electromagnetic compatibility or experimental measurements. More specifically the AEF will be fitted to discharge currents from the IEC 62305-1 and IEC 61000-4-2 standards for lightning protection and electrostatic discharge immunity as well as some experimentally measured data of similar phenomena.

  • On eigenvalues of the Schrödinger operator with a complex-valued polynomial potential
  • 2010
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this thesis, we generalize a recent result of A. Eremenko and A. Gabrielov on irreducibility of the spectral discriminant for the Schroedinger equation with quartic potentials. In the first paper, we consider the eigenvalue problem with a complex-valued polynomial potential of arbitrary degree d and show that the spectral determinant of this problem is connected and irreducible. In other words, every eigenvalue can be reached from any other by analytic continuation. We also prove connectedness of the parameter spaces of the potentials that admit eigenfunctions satisfying k > 2 boundary conditions, except for the case d is even and k = d/2. In the latter case, connected components of the parameter space are distinguished by the number of zeros of the eigenfunctions. In the second paper, we only consider even polynomial potentials, and show that the spectral determinant for the eigenvalue problem consists of two irreducible components. A similar result to that of paper I is proved for k boundary conditions.

  • Propagation of singularities for pseudo-differential operators and generalized Schrödinger propagators
  • 2010
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this thesis we discuss different types of regularity for distributions which appear in the theory of pseudo-differential operators and partial differential equations. Partial differential equations often appear in science and technology. For example the Schrödinger equation can be used to describe the change in time of quantum states of physical systems. Pseudo-differential operators can be used to solve partial differential equations.  They are also appropriate to use when modeling different types of problems within physics and engineering. For example, there is a natural connection between pseudo-differential operators and stationary and non-stationary filters in signal processing. Furthermore, the correspondence between symbols and operators when passing from classical mechanics to quantum mechanics essentially agrees with symbols and operators in the Weyl calculus of pseudo-differential operators. In this thesis we concentrate on investigating how regularity properties for solutions of partial differential equations are affected under the mapping of pseudo-differential operators, and in particular of the free time-dependent Schrödinger operators. The solution of the free time-dependent Schrödinger equation can be expressed as a pseudo-differential operator, with non-smooth symbol, acting on the initial condition. We generalize a result about non-tangential convergence, which was obtained by Sjögren and Sjölin (1989) for the free time-dependent Schrödinger equation. Another way to describe regularity for a distribution is to use wave-front sets. They do not only describe where the singularities are, but also the directions in which these singularities appear. The first types of wave-front sets (analytical wave-front sets) were introduced by Sato (1969, 1970). Later on Hörmander introduced ``classical'' wave-front sets (with respect to smoothness) and showed results in the context of pseudo-differential operators with smooth symbols, cf. Hörmander (1985). In this thesis we consider wave-front sets with respect to Fourier Banach function spaces. Roughly speaking, we take B as a Banach space, which is invariant under translations and embedded between the space of Schwartz functions and the space of temperated distributions. Then we say that the wave-front set of a distribution contains all points (x0, ξ0) such that no localization of the distribution at x0, belongs to FB in the direction ξ0. We prove that pseudo-differential operators with smooth symbols shrink the wave-front set and we obtain opposite embeddings by using sets of characteristic points of the operator symbols.

  • Game theory and applications
  • 2021
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Individual-level interactions and decisions spread though populations and change the collective-level dynamics in an intricate way. Nevertheless, game theory is well suited for the unification of these viewpoints. This thesis introduces the works The strength of diversity and Decisions and disease: a mechanism for the evolution of cooperation, which show that games have broad applications in population dynamics modeling. In The strength of diversity we calculate the equilibrium strategies of the so-called game of teams. The game of teams is an individual-level competition between teams, and a team's strategy in this context is a distribution of strength over the team members. It turns out that the equilibrium strategies are flat distributions or 'alternating' flat distributions whenever there exists equilibrium strategies. In Decisions and disease: a mechanism for the evolution of cooperation we combine the classic SIR and SIS models from epidemiology with the prisoner's dilemma game. The transmission rate is computed as the average over defecting and cooperating individuals, and the individuals are subjected to a replicator equation that takes into account the portion of infectious members of the population. We compute the steady state solutions and interpret the results.
