Swedish tribalism and Tanzanian entrepreneurship : preconditions for trust formation

- This paper sets out to explore the preconditions for trust formation using a comparative approach. It takes an empirical point of departure, in two longitudinal and ethnographically inspired studies in the differing contexts of Sweden and Tanzania. The comparison reveals many similarities between the contexts with regard to the influence of informal institutions, as well as the significance of categories in trust formation. Perhaps surprisingly, trust and co-operation are not as low as could be expected in Tanzania, given the inadequate formal institutional environment, but instead, the greater need for co-operation evoked entrepreneurial initiatives that enabled the creation of trust. While the Swedish small-business owners could afford their ‘tribalism’, Tanzanians created trust in an entrepreneurial way. The importance of interventions to understand the local institutional framework is highlighted and it is argued that arranging business training, or similar events, is a fruitful way to facilitate the trust creation process in development contexts.

Retirement Return Migration from Sweden

- This study deals with return migration among immigrants in Sweden who are between 51 and 80 years old. An important question regards the impact of retirement on return migration. Some circumstances connected to the withdrawal from the labour market suggest an increased propensity to return, such as the transition from a wage income to a pension, which weakens the link between place of residence and income. In addition, patterns of return migration at the end of working life may indicate whether or not temporary migration is a planned strategy. It is found that when reaching the age of 65, the legal retirement age in Sweden, the probability of return migration increases, in particular for men. The effect of retirement is immediate; the probability of return migration declines again beyond the age of 65, indicating a conscious plan to return to the home country when the labour market career is over. Furthermore, immigrants who receive early retirement compensation have a considerably higher probability of return migration compared to those who are not retired. These clear “retirement effects” show that return migration can be an important ingredient in the welfare optimization strategies of migrants. When it comes to income selectivity, the analysis shows that there is a positive selection, something that is expected when migrants are target savers with a temporary migration strategy.

- In this chapter Branka Likić-Brborić addresses the emerging global governance of migration. She scrutinizes the structuring of human and labour rights discourses and contingencies for their institutionalisation and implementation by discussing their prospects for the promotion of global social justice. Issues of accountability and contingencies for the implementation of labour and human rights as migrants’ rights are discussed in the wider context of the existing global governance architecture. The chapter questions assumptions that setting up a workable model for codification and institutionalisation of labour standards, human rights and migrants’ rights could be left to a currently asymmetric global governance regime or to a variety of codes of corporate social responsibility. Global and regional trade union confederations and other civil society organizations have an essential role in repositioning a rights-based approach to migration, labour standards and development onto the terrain of a just globalisation.

Under 2000-talet har social ojämlikhet och boendesegregering ökat, åtföljd av rasism och en allt mer restriktiv flyktingpolitik. Sverige är en nation i ombildning. Åtstramningspolitik och högerpopulism har fått bred förankring i partipolitiken. Samtidigt uppstår motrörelser, där civilsamhälleliga aktörer kräver en fördjupad demokrati och social rättvisa. Vi står inför ett skifte. Kommer en nyliberal ekonomisk politik att smälta samman med en auktoritär, rasistisk populism? Eller är de nya rörelserna en öppning mot ett mer inkluderande, jämlikt och rättvist samhälle, där visionen för framtiden byggs på hopp och optimism — inte rädsla och hot?

- Centrum för kommunstrategiska studier (CKS) vid Linköpings universitet är en centrumbildning vars uppgift bland annat är att främja framväxten av för kommunerna relevant forskning samt öka kontakten mellan forskarsamhället och den kommunala praktiken. Verksamheten finansieras sedan mitten av 1990-talet gemensamt av kommunerna i Östergötland samt universitetet. Under de år som verksamheten funnits har ett hundratal projekt genomförts.I samband med tillkomsten av den nya Institutionen för studier av samhällsutveckling och kultur (ISAK) togs initiativ till ett gemensamt projekt benämnt ”Östgötar- finns dom?” I detta projekt har Tema Q (Tema Kultur och samhälle), Enheten för historia, Kulturarv Östergötland, Centrum för lokalhistoria samt CKS på skilda sätt varit engagerade. Som ett viktigt inslag i projektet genomfördes under hösten 2003 en konferens med deltagande av forskare, politiker och tjänstemän. Föreliggande rapport är en dokumentation från denna konferens.Rapporten inleds med en diskussion kring vilka frågeställningar som framstår som centrala i utvecklingen av projektets fortsättning. Denna del är författad av initiativtagarna till projektet Peter Aronsson, temaansvarig vid Tema Q samt Lars Kvarnström, enhetschef vid Enheten för historia. Doktorand Helena Kåks dokumenterade seminariet och tre av forskarinläggen återfinns som bilagor till rapporten.

- So far, research on the welfare state has usually neglected children and childhood. In the rare attempts to include childhood in welfare state analysis, too much emphasis was placed on children as future adults. However, only a full recognition of children as human beings and citizens here and now are compatible with new social studies of childhood as well as children's rights discourses. Thus the conceptual integration of children and childhood in the welfare state is still an open question. This book closes the gap by offering the concept of generational order as theoretical tool to both childhood and welfare state research. In analogy to gender analysis, this concept is an adequate tool in providing visibility to the adult bias of traditional welfare state theories and practices. The book includes contributors from ten predominantly European countries, exploring issues of children's social and economic welfare, such as child poverty in a theoretical, methodological, and practical perspective. Together with the companion volume below — Flexible Childhood, also by the University Press of Southern Denmark — this book is the final result of COST Action A19, Children's Welfare, which has been supported by the European COST Framework.

- Children's spaces are widening — culturally and socially. Socially, children’s spaces are more often multilocal. Culturally, they are enlarged through mobility in the globalized and virtual spaces in the media-saturated world. Children's times are also less confined by strict borderlines. The more flexible and individualized use of time in the world of work impacts on children's lives in families, day care, and school. The chapters of this volume each present particular temporal and spatial aspects of social change in childhood. The book is directed toward considering the impact of such change on children's welfare. As former boundaries between generations begin to blur and neo-liberal forces enter all realms of people's lives, it can no longer be taken for granted — as it was in former periods of modernity — that continued efforts to realize the childhood project will automatically guarantee the "best interest of the child." Teknologistudenter och informationshantering : En studie om informationskompetens vid Linköpings Tekniska högskola influerad av grounded theory

- The main purpose with this study is to investigate and understand how technology students handle information especially when they are working with their Master's thesis. A further purpose is to examine how technology students use library resources of the Linköping University. The research method used is grounded theory, where description of the method is an integral part of the study. Twelve qualitative interviews were made with newly qualified graduates from the engineering programs of Linköping Institute of Technology. The respondents were divided into two groups, A and B, with six in each group. All of them had completed or almost completed their education and their final thesis. The six engineers in group A had not chosen any course in information seeking, whereas in group B all six engineers had chosen the optional course, TGTU 60, offered in information seeking. The results indicate that the technology students adopt their way of seeking information from their teachers and supervisors and from the study culture. The students' adoption of information management is the social process that constitutes the core category of the research. The results also show that the engineering program is traditional and that the students seldom visit the library. A high rate of study, set course literature and traditional teaching are factors that scarcely stimulate the students to use the library. But after the course in information seeking, the respondents in group B had improved their information literacy and used the library more often.
