  • A Cry for Care But not Justice : Embodied Vulnerabilities and the Moral Economy of Child Welfare
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Affilia. - : SAGE Publications. - 0886-1099 .- 1552-3020. ; 35:2, s. 231-245
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores the pivotal role of the body for political recognition and rights claims in child welfare "moral" interventions. I examine how the bodily figures in child welfare assessments, linking these manifestations to the concept of the moral economy of care. A sample of assessment reports from a Swedish municipality, all addressing violations of children's bodies or integrity, are used as empirical material. I show how the psychosomatically suffering child is being best "heard" as vulnerable. I also argue that such a moral economy of care silences children's accounts of gendered and racial injustices. Furthermore, racialized moral divides are indicated when assessments of different child bodies are considered. A concluding remark points to need for a child welfare moral economy of social justice that responds to structural intersecting injustices in childhoods, including to those of a racialized child welfare and its individualized and symptom-oriented services.

  • Är dagens arbeten attraktiva? Värderingar hos 1 440 anställda
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Arbetsmarknad & Arbetsliv. - Karlstad : Karlstads universitet. - 1400-9692 .- 2002-343X. ; 16:4, s. 31-43
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Young and Vaccinated? : Children and Young People’s Perspectives on Covid-19 Vaccinations
  • 2022
  • Konferensbidrag (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • The research project is inspired by an ongoing study showing that although children and young people are central subjects to the debates on vaccine-preventable diseases, and constitute the main target of vaccines, young people are largely absent in public debates and research about vaccination-related attitudes and decision-making processes. In the pre-pandemic time, vaccination attitudes were commonly discussed in relation to parents’ views and decision-making processes concerning preventable “child diseases”. Despite the fact that the focus has been on parents, children have been central to arguments and practices, as both positive and negative attitudes toward immunizations may be expressed as care for children. The perspectives of children and young people themselves, particularly in relation to covid-19 vaccinations, are largely unexplored. In this research project, interviews will be conducted with children and young people, from the age of 12, about their views, decision-making processes and resistances in the context of covid-19 vaccinations. Focusing particularly on children and young people in Sweden whose views differ from the views of parents, health professionals or other adults, this project aims to foreground resistances in childhoods and youth in general and expand the notion of resistance in vaccination contexts in particular. Experiences from different Swedish Regional Councils and diverse procedures concerning assessments of age and maturity will be included in order to explore how young people navigate in terrains that requires adult consent and how these procedures enable but also constrain children and young people’s vaccination-related decision-making.

  • Reflections on the hegemonic exclusion of critical realism from academic settings : alone in a room full of people
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Critical Realism. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1476-7430 .- 1572-5138. ; 17:4, s. 374-389
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, I discuss my personal experience of the issues that can arise when adopting critical realism in academic contexts dominated by irrealist (positivist, phenomenological and post-structuralist) methodological approaches. I draw inspiration for my analysis from the concept of Gramscian hegemony and the concept of ‘authenticity’. These concepts are related because hegemonic processes prevent individuals from freely expressing themselves. In my case, academic hegemony has resulted in social pressure to sacrifice my authentic critical realist self in order to achieve academic success. I also discuss groupthink dynamics, suggesting that they are a mechanism by which hegemony–and denial of individual authenticity–can be achieved. This paper is meant to be a theoretical and reflexive discussion, which could be the starting point for empirical studies investigating the situation of a critical realist in a hegemonic academic context.

  • Sami tourism in marketing material : a multimodal discourse analysis
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Acta Borealia. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0800-3831 .- 1503-111X. ; 39:2, s. 115-137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study of tourism marketing communication is an important aspect that contributes to the understanding of how destinations and locals are portrayed. Through the so-called circle of representation, images can spread from tourism marketing to other media, such as tourism photography. Marketing material in the form of 118 brochures, 3000 Instagram posts and a guidebook portraying the Sami population mostly in Swedish Lapland, but also in Finnish Lapland as well as Finnmark, Norway, have been collected and analyzed. The focus is on pictorial and textual elements and eight previously conceptualized themes have been used to guide the analysis. The focus was on the portrayal of the Sami Indigenous population. The materials were collected through a direct qualitative content analysis and analyzed through a multimodal discourse analysis. The results show that there is still a tendency to portray the Sami based on exoticism. This can spread to different media channels, but there are also discrepancies that hint at a gradual change in how Indigenous populations such as the Sami are presented. The results of this study show the potential for the use of social media channels such as Instagram for Indigenous entrepreneurs and destination management organizations to educate, attract and entice potential visitors.

  • Framtidsstudier i stora organisationers långsiktiga planering : analysmodell och fallstudier
  • 2005
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • People use a variety of means to orient themselves towards the future. A more organised approach to handling the future known as "futures studies" is often used in a variety of contexts including long-term planning within large organisations. In the effort to enhance the quality of such studies, there have been arguments for better methods (which makes sense), but methods may not be the most important aspect in the production of futures studies. Greater theoretical awareness in the substantive questions upon which the study is based is more important. To that end, the intent of this dissertation is to infuse a keener awareness of fundamental assumptions in futures studies and contribute to increasing their quality. One objective of the dissertation is to formulate a method or procedure to analyse the futures studies of large organisations, apply it to two empirical cases and thereafter analyse its strengths and weaknesses. The method I discuss and develop extensively in this work consists of an analytical framework that focuses on three aspects of each future study: its architecture, its relationship to a few of the key future issues of our time and its assumptions regarding our views on society, humanity and technology. A second objective is to systematically study future documents from two large organisations and attempt to clarify motives, orientation, methodology and distinguishing characteristics in their future processes. The cases I have chosen are the Swedish Armed Forces and the telecommunications company Ericsson, which were both in a period of transition around the mid 1990s.The dissertation shows how the method has been used to bring to the fore and clarify central ideas in futures studies, identify ambiguities and fuzzy thinking and to show and expose more covert assumptions. The analysis also illustrates that certain aspects of the model have been observed in the empirical material, other ideas are found to a lesser extent and certain perspectives are entirely absent. The paper stresses that the model developed has both strengths and weaknesses, but the overall assessment is that it was well-balanced and maintains appropriate depth in relation to desired efficiency. The study shows that the analytical method is relevant and adequate to understand and describe the direction and content of futures studies and in so doing enhance their quality.

  • Futures studies as social science : An analytic scheme and a case study
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Futures. - : Elsevier BV. - 0016-3287 .- 1873-6378. ; 40:5, s. 489-502
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Several authors in the futures studies field have in their efforts to improve quality argued that better methods must be developed, which makes sense. But the theoretical awareness in the substantive questions upon which the studies are based is probably more important. In that light, the primary objective of this article is to formulate a method of how fundamental social issues (views on society and humanity) are addressed in a future study, apply it to one empirical case (telecommunications company Ericsson) and thereafter analyze the method's strengths and weaknesses. The study shows that the method gained a satisfactory foothold in the material and it has an appropriate depth in relation to desired efficiency. This work has shown that the analytical method is relevant and adequate to understand and describe the orientation and contents of futures studies. Therewith, the study has generated greater awareness of fundamental assumptions in future studies that can contribute to enhancing their quality. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • Caregiving and volunteering among older people in Sweden - prevalences and profiles
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Aging & Social Policy. - : Haworth Press. - 0895-9420 .- 1545-0821. ; 21:4, s. 352-373
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study examines the role of older people in Swedish society by exploring the prevalence of their informal caregiving and volunteering and by analyzing the profiles of these contributors of unpaid work. Data were collected by means of telephone interviews in a Swedish representative survey conducted in 2005. Our analysis reveals three distinct profiles of people involved in unpaid activities. One of these consists of those involved both in informal helpgiving and volunteering, a group that has been labeled “super helpers” or “doers” in earlier research. It is important for social policy planners to recognize these groups of older people and better understand the dynamics of their unpaid work in order to ascertain whether they might need support as providers and to enhance their well-being. There does not seem to be any simple contradiction between the parallel existence of a universal welfare model of the Swedish kind and an extensive civil society in which older people play important roles as active citizens.

  • Home setting after stroke, facilitators and barriers: a systematic literature review
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Health and Social Care in the Community. - : Hindawi Limited. - 1365-2524 .- 0966-0410. ; 26:4, s. e451-e459
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper seeks to improve the understanding of the interaction between patients with stroke and the physical environment in their home settings. Stroke care is increasingly performed in the patient’s home. Therefore, a systematic review was conducted to identify the existing knowledge about facilitators and barriers in the physical environment of home settings for the stroke rehabilitation process. Based upon Arksey and O’Malley’s framework, a Boolean search strategy was performed in the databases; CINAHL, Medline, Web of Science and Scopus. Fifteen articles were retained from the literature search conducted between August and November 2016, and two researchers independently assessed their quality based on the Swedish Council on Health Technology Assessment guidelines. The results suggest that despite the healthcare system’s ongoing shift towards home-based rehabilitation, the role played by the physical environment of home settings is still considered a side finding. Moreover, the research appears to focus mainly on how this environment supports mobility and activities of daily living, whereas information regarding the psychosocial and emotional processes that mediate the interaction between stroke survivors and their home setting are missing. A lack of information was also found with regard to the influence of different geographic locations on the stroke rehabilitation process. Future investigations are therefore needed to advance the understanding of the role played by the physical environment of home settings in supporting stroke recovery.
