Digital Distance Education – A Longitudinal Exploration of Video Technology

- The context of this thesis is digital distance education. Distance education has developed from correspondence courses, based on letters sent by mail between student and teacher, to digital distance education with interactive video classes from anywhere, as long as a computer/tablet/smartphone and an Internet connection are available. The development of technology, particularly with the introduction of the Internet, has completely changed the possibilities for teaching, learning, interaction, and communication at a distance. Many technologies can be used in distance education, but this thesis aims to: Better understand the possibilities and limitations of video in digital distance higher education. The research has three elements of analysis: 1) video technology, 2) distance courses, and 3) distance teachers. Each allows a focus on how distance courses with video are designed and on teachers’ perspectives on the use of video in distance education. The first focus on course design is examined through two research questions. RQ1 asks, How is digital video used in distance higher education? When teachers design distance courses with digital video; a) which categories of video are used or not used? b) how much are these categories used? c) why are they used or not used? And d) how are they used? Complementing RQ1, RQ2 asks, How do course designers respond to the possibilities and limitations of video for distance higher education? Addressing the second focus of the thesis on teacher perspectives, RQ3 asks, What are the teacher’s attitudes and perceptions about the use of digital video in distance higher education? With a comprehensive literature review as a foundation, the results of this thesis include a classification system with two main categories; recorded and live video that is developed and used to orient an empirical investigation. The data for this investigation was collected through a national web-based questionnaire. Then, based on the survey, a specific higher education institution was selected for an interview study with teachers using video conferencing in distance courses in Teacher education. Interaction and communication are central concepts in this thesis, and the analytical lens combines the socio-cultural perspective and the theory of affordances. The results indicate that across types, video is mostly used as a supplement to other resources. Further, a correspondence is found concerning, on the one hand, teachers’ experience of distance education and participation in in-service training, and on the other hand, their use of video in teaching. In general, the most reported reasons why teachers do not use video are that it does not bring anything and takes too much time. Many of the constraints that teachers perceive are related to time; e.g. competition between an ambition to teach according to a student-centred approach but also a strong feeling of responsibility of delivering content to students. The technology of video has the affordances of mediating a teaching and learning environment similar to the one in the classroom, but conditions such as large groups or many students and the difficulty of perceiving non-verbal signals through video, affect the communication situation negatively and reduce possibilities of interaction. As a systematic study investigating the mainstream use of technology and media, this thesis contrasts with many other studies, which are often relatively small and local in nature, conducted by enthusiastic teachers investigating the use of one specific technology. The results show how the mainstream use of technologies such as video change conditions for distance teaching and influence how we think and interact with others and our environment.

- Aim: This review will identify, evaluate and synthesize the literature related to evidence-based design of healthcare environments and to identify impacts of the built environment on the outcomes and experiences of patients, significant others and staff. Design: A mixed-method systematic review of literature 2010–2018. Methods: Database searches for evidence in peer-reviewed journals will be conducted electronically using CINAHL, Medline, SCOPUS and Web of Science. Abstract, full-text screening and data extraction will be completed independently by the reviewers. Quality assessment will follow Swedish Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Social Services Assessment. Results: This review will offer knowledge for informed decisions about the design of the healthcare environment. The review is comprehensive, includes a large volume of literature various research designs and will highlight the knowledge gap in evidence-based design and provide a breadth of knowledge about the built environments and its impact on health and well-being.

- The Leaving of Ireland brings together an international group of scholars to reflect critically on the unfolding nature of the experience of Irish cultural identity at a time when Ireland is struggling to adjust to the shattering impacts of globalization and religious scandals of recent decades. Looking back over the last two centuries, the volume considers a range of literary and filmic works that have sought to articulate something of this experience and its multiple locations. The essays revisit crucial constituents of Irish history and self-perception at the micro-level, exploring the representation of individual experiences of migration and identification and the definition of a sense of belonging. They also examine these issues at the macro-level, looking at larger politico-historical transformations, national affiliations and changed social and geographical landscapes. The book is organized around key themes including history, mobility, memory and place and addresses the works of a wide range of authors, including Emily Lawless, Frank McCourt, Sinead Morrissey, Paul Muldoon, Joseph O’Connor, J.M. Synge and W.B. Yeats.

Commercialization of Lesbian Identities in Showtime’s The L-word

- The article discusses recent developments in media culture through one case study: The L-word, the first television series narratively centered around lesbian and bisexual characters. The business discourse surrounding the series’ production is examined together with the televised text itself and the merchandize connected to The L-word brand. The main research question is why lesbians, a target group previously deemed uninteresting by advertisers and international media conglomerates, have suddenly become demographically desirable. Media producers show increasing interest in the active audience, and encourage fans’ own creativity, for example through social web 2.0 media productions and events, and intermedia storytelling. This is made possible through the televised text’s discursive re-positioning of lesbian identities. The article argues that lesbian identity is a social construction and that it can be seen as an empty or floating signifier, which is filled with new meanings. It also analyzes the immersive online communities and various other merchandize connected to the series as an aspect of thingification, a process were the media is increasingly occupied with things and brands rather than stories and representations. The result is the branded lesbian, or the lesbian brand, which can be seen as an appropriation of lesbian identities.

Grrlziner : Populärfeminism, identitet och strategier

- Syftet med denna avhandling är att undersöka genren grrlziner på Internet, tidningar av och för unga kvinnor som anknyter till samtida feministiska strömningar. Studien har ett flertal teoretiska och metodologiska perspektiv. Den ansluter till forskningstraditionen cultural studies, och analyserar mediet ur både ett producent, text- och användarperspektiv, men med en tonvikt på medietexterna och utvalda teman som identitet, kön, sexualitet och feminism. Speciellt intresse har visats feministiska strategier, och här används bland annat Nancy Frasers diskussion om fruktbara strategier för undertryckta grupper. Grrlzinerna använder sig ofta av dekonstruktivistiska strategier, där skillnader inom grupper erkänns, och man använder sig av symboler för det feminina på ett strategiskt, ironiskt och parodiskt vis. Detta anknyter till en postmodern syn på det kvinnliga objektet och ung-feministiska strömningar som riot grrrl och annan tredje vågen-feminism. Efter en inledande textanalys av elva grrlziner studeras de svenska grrlzinerna Darling och Corky, ur både ett producent- och ett användarperspektiv, samt textanalytiskt. Fokus ligger på vilka identiteter som konstrueras av de båda tidningarna. I Darling är det Darling-tjejen, som vill vara alternativ och intresserar sig för musik och rockfestivaler. Enligt läsarna är Darling en tidning som får människor att tänka. En positiv inställning till feminism och ett problematiserande av kön är en del av denna identitet, som ses i ljuset av teorier om det posttraditionella. Det viktigaste i denna identitet är smak och åsikter. I Corky konstrueras en mer sammanhållen, lesbisk identitet. Läsarna menar att denna tidning behövs i ett samhälle där det är norm att vara heterosexuell. Speciellt damtidningarna uppmuntrar kvinnor att göra saker för män. Corky försöker dock göra den lesbiska identiteten mer modern genom att anknyta till queerfeminism, ett projekt som inte görs fullt ut då queerteorin kräver ett mer långtgående ifrågasättande av sexuella identiteter. I avhandlingen diskuteras även problemen och fördelarna med att feminism och lesbisk sexualpolitik träder in i mainstreammedierna och blir varor på en marknad. Det påpekas att Sveriges politiska klimat utmärks av ko-optering, vilket gör att undertryckta grupper ges legitimitet och syns på den politiska arenan eller i medierna, men också kan urvattna det politiska budskapet och försvåra kamp. Frågan är vilka representanter för dessa grupper det är som får synas, och på vems villkor. Detta kan också leda till exotisering av de undertryckta, och att grupper ses som väsensskilda samtidigt som man på papperet tillmäter dem lika värde.

- Boken är resultatet av ett samarbete mellan Svenska Filminstitutet och forskare inom det regionala nätverket Penta Plus. Den inleder en förlagsserie om forskning vid SFI:s arkiv i Grängesberg för icke-biografdistribuerad film. En kort redogörelse för projektets bakgrund, uformning och syfte följs av två delstudier. Uifrån begreppen kulturarv och identitet jämför den första bilder av Västmanland i filmen Salabygd (1953) med nutida länslanseringar. Den andra delstudien analyserar ett stort antal privatfilmer från 1960- 70- och 80-talen. I detta digra material studeras i synnerhet individers förhållande till kamera och motiv.
