  • Mediatization of Self-identity and Divorce : A Study of Life-style Journalism and an Internet Forum on Divorce in Sweden
  • 2017

    • Mediatization of Self-identity and DivorceA Study of Life-style Journalism and an Internet Forum onDivorce in Sweden Camilla HermanssonLuleå University of TechnologyCamilla.hermansson@ltu.se+46 735 244683  Marriage in liquid modernity with increased individualization has to a greater extent came to be the creation of individual autobiographies, instead of based on rigid conventions. (Bauman 2000, Giddens, 1991) In this environment individuals also faces risks to be exposed to divorce in close relationships. This outline for a study will examine how life-style journalism interact with discussions about divorce on an internet forum in Sweden.Giddens (1991) writes that even self-identity is at stake in late-modern societies, because the reflexive individual is considered to create his own autobiography from a greater number of options which the self must constantly make revisions in relation to. The marriage is under negotiation and is characterized as a transition to the so-called pure relationship where only the love to another should be the guiding principle. Late-modernity itself is a risk culture which challenge individuals trust mechanisms.(Beck 1986, Giddens, 1991) Individual´s are exposed to the risk that their marriage can be dissolved, and after a divorce the self faces challenges to establish trust in another human being. Giddens believes that the media plays a very significant role when self-identity is shaped, and the media also help define social reality and patterns of social interaction. Late modernity itself fundamentally change the everyday life of individuals, and personal aspects of our experience has become mediatized to a greater extent than before. Mediatization has emerged as a new research agenda within media studies, and the concept can be understood from different perspectives and at different levels in society. It is often regarded as a middle-range theory in need to be defined, and also adapted to the prevailing condition of studies on an increasing number of issues. Social institutions and cultural processes have changed character in response to the media having greater authority to define social processes. (Hjarvard 2013, Couldry & Hepp, 2017) Mediated experience is created and penetrates into individual experience, self-identity och everyday life. Late-modernity and mediatization har led to more and more media becoming a part of the individual´s everyday life, and media texts and images becomes part of the individual´s identity contruction. (Fornäs, 2015). Digitalization and Web 2.0 has given individual´s the option to discuss, for example, on internet forums and to write and get response about their life experiences and challenges. The construction of the self and the media are woven into our private lives. Virtually all of human experiences are mediated by socialization, but also in language.(Giddens, 1991) In this study on media in Sweden discussion treads about divorce on the internet forum www.familjeliv.se are to be examined together with life-style journalism in supplements to tabloids (Expressen Söndag and Aftonbladet Söndag). The aim is to try to understand how individuals communicate an eminently traumatic period in their lives where their self-identity is at stake,  and how in a wider context this becomes a discursive construction in interface with the tabloids. The study uses a critical discourse analysis (CDA) and an analysis of visual and linguistic elements in order to thematizise the material and to make close readings of texts. In the visual analysis the symbolic interaction between the observer and observed are to be studied, where photos and illustrations are of interest. Camera angles and the distance to the images are to be interpreted, as well as the demands, requests and offers that are made visible. (Björkvall, 2012) The linguistic elements found in texts on the internet forum and in the supplements to the tabloids are to be examined on a lexical level and the texts modality and evaluation is also of interest.(Fairclough, 1991)

  • Forest days as an educational method in Swedish family forestry
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Forest Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0282-7581 .- 1651-1891. ; 25:Suppl. 9, s. 25-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Swedish forest owners are a diverse group with regard to activity, education and experience of practical forestry. Urbanization and increased gender equality have also changed the composition of forest owners and their involvement in practical forestry work. Yet, many forest owners perform some kind of practical work on their property. The combination of dangerous work and untrained practitioners has led to a number of serious accidents. As a part of a larger safety campaign, a forest day for absentee forest owners living in the Stockholm area was carried out. Safety and safe working with chainsaws was a core message. To assess the immediate learning effect among different categories of forest owners, a questionnaire and a before-and-after test were used. The results show that those who knew less, female forest owners and non-chainsaw users, learned the most. The study also shows that the use of safety equipment is limited among absentee forest owners and that forest days and courses are important for their conception of safety. During the forest day, men were central experts and women appeared as servants, demonstrating the presence of a masculine hegemony. As the forest owners learned from each other it is important that professional communicators are seen to be the most reliable and trustworthy

  • Strong, aware, and unequal : women's lives in Tornedalen (northernmost borderland of Sweden)
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Equal Opportunities International. - : Emerald. - 0261-0159. ; 27:4, s. 317-336
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - The overall purpose of this paper is to study gender and equality-related issues by exploring gender functions in the northernmost borderland of Sweden (the Tornedalen area). The study focuses on women's views of their own lives and how local culture may shape their identity. Design/methodology/approach - By analysing a large number of women's narratives through approaching feminist poststructuralism, the analysis focuses on gender relations and how women have adapted their lives according to the norms of the local society. The study involves a historical perspective from the middle to the late twentieth century. This includes transitions from an almost exclusively rural to a more urbanized life (within the countryside) and from a time when almost all women were full-time housewives to a time when this has become a rarity. Findings - The traditional culture in Tornedalen still existed in the late 1990s with pressure coming from the older generations to maintain traditional gender functions. From a feminist poststructuralist perspective, competing discourses affects the identity of the Tornedalen woman. Such competing discourses lead to, for example, women being impressed by masculine men who dominate the family whilst also, seemingly, expressing concern for equality issues. Many common gender identity characteristics also exist, such as (a feeling of) being strong (to be able to live in Tornedalen) and (a feeling of) being very much aware of (and claiming) local gender inequality. Originality/value - The paper provides new knowledge as to how inequality may persist in (a) local area(s) ruled by traditional norms. It also provides insights into women's lives and how identities evolve in (a) small local society(ies).

  • Women narratives from Tornedalen, northernmost Sweden : gender and culture in perspective
  • 2008
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis concerns gender issues based on 103 interviews with women from the northernmost borderland of Sweden (Tornedalen area). The interviews become women narratives as told from their lives, including anecdotes of particular events as well as a vast amount of information related to gender and equality. Feminist poststructuralism inspired me in this thesis. I believe that approaching feminist poststructural theory and practice may help in understanding how the local culture has influenced gender relations in Tornedalen. Each and every woman is unique and shaped by various discourses throughout her life. However, when combining all unique women into a group of women we can see both differences and common characteristics in the group. By drawing on discourse and feminist poststructural analysis I have attempted to convey my understanding of the respondents' narratives. On the one hand, they are very different from each other, and express contradictory views; on the other hand, they have common characteristics that are shared by many women. I believe that it is important to consider all possibilities opened up through feminist poststructural analysis. The thesis comprises six papers which emphasizes different aspects on how women have adapted their lives according to the local culture of Tornedalen. The findings also reflect a historical perspective from the middle to the late twentieth century, including moving from a time when most women were full-time housewives to a time when most women work outside the home. The traditional culture in Tornedalen still existed in the late 1990s with pressure seemingly coming from the older generations to maintain traditional gender functions. Tornedalen women often seem to be preoccupied by imagery of what the local society expects and/or demands of them. Altogether, the knowledge of the participants in this study has produced multiple truths about gender and about women's lives. As would be expected, experiences of the women differed, as did their understandings of equality issues and ways of talking about it. Most women in Tornedalen seem to have a good knowledge of equality issues; however, in their own words, they believe equality has not changed significantly in Tornedalen from the 1950s to the late 1990s. The thesis provides new knowledge as to how inequality may persist in (a) local area(s) ruled by traditional norms. It also provides insights into women's lives and how identities evolve in (a) small local society(ies).

  • Social media for user innovation in Living Labs : a framework to support user recruitment and commitment
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the XXIV ISPIM conference. - Lappeenranta : Lappeenranta University of Technology Press. - 9789522654212
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social media are becoming an increasingly relevant channel for user involvement. However, their uptake in Living Labs environments, as a means to engage users in innovation processes, is still limited. The aim of this paper is to explore challenges and opportunities related to the usage of social media for user involvement in co-creative processes, The findings presented emerge both from the available literature and case studies, and emphasise four different dimensions influencing user engagement: facilitator, community, platform and innovation process. Based on these dimensions, the authors propose a basic framework, intended as the point of departure for taking the next step toward the construction and verification of theoretical constructs that can help inform and guide future innovation projects.

  • Rethinking rewilding
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Geoforum. - : Elsevier. - 0016-7185 .- 1872-9398. ; 65, s. 482-488
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The term 'rewilding' sounds as if it should have a straightforward meaning 'to make wild again'. But in truth the term has a complex history and a host of meanings have been ascribed to it. Rewilding as a specific scientific term has its beginnings as a reference to the Wildlands Project, which was founded in 1991 and aimed to create North American core wilderness areas without human activity that would be connected by corridors. Words, however, do not stand still they change over time and take on new meanings, while sometimes simultaneously retaining the older sense. Employing Foucault's idea of historical genealogy, this article examines how the term rewilding was historically adopted and modified in ecological scientific discourse over the last two decades. This investigation probes what and, by extension, when and where, rewilding refers to as it has moved into various geographies across the globe. It then examines how the term has moved outside of science and been adopted by environmental activists as a plastic word. Taken as a whole, rewilding discourse seeks to erase human history and involvement with the land and flora and fauna. Such an attempted split between nature and culture may prove unproductive and even harmful. A more inclusive rewilding is a preferable strategy.
