  • Citation patterns in educational research
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Assessing Quality in European Educational Research: Indicators and Approaches. - Wiesbaden : Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden. - 9783658059699 ; , s. 85-106
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this study is to investigate citation structures in educational research; and also, to study the visibility of European educational research. Bibliometric analyses are performed on data from Web of Science, the EERQI Content Base and Google Scholar, investigating both characteristics of publications through frequencies and distributions, as well as citation structures through cocitation analyses. The results show fragmented citation patterns presenting little opportunity to detect robust evidence of visibility or impact of contemporary educational research on any level of aggregation other than field level. This should be interpreted considering the diverse nature of educational research, and an organization of the field that differs from a strong norm, not the least in research evaluation programs, of research essentially being a cumulative process.

  • Storying Research : Conducting Research in New Formats and New Voices
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: iConference 2014 Proceedings. - : IDEALS/iSchools. ; , s. 1223-1226, s. 1223-1226
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The session engages with an acute tension evident in scholarly communication: We are witnessing a great deal of innovation and experimentation in relation to the way research is performed and shared. The push towards, and need for, innovation and creativity in academic research is being emphasized to an ever increasing extent. A rich set of digital tools and transdisciplinary engagements have opened the door for research conducted and reported in increasingly hybridised, dynamic and interactive ways. At the same time, academic research is increasingly being evaluated by focusing on quantitative analyses based on publications; analyses which privilege established scholarly practices and publication venues. In the session, we are interested in exploring collectively on the one hand, the voice in and position from which we report on research and - indeed - conduct research. On the other hand, how do we use documents and artefacts to tell our stories? Digital media provide new affordances through a broader selection of modes of representation to present data, results and argumentation. The session is conducted as a 'conversation café', where each café table focuses on one aspect of these opportunities.

  • Consumer Credit Behavior in the Digital Context : A Bibliometric Analysis and Literature Review
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Journal of Financial Counceling and Planning. - : Springer Publishing Company. - 1052-3073 .- 1947-7910. ; 28:1, s. 76-94
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This literature review seeks to map the state of research on the effects of digitization on personal financial behavior and management through a bibliometric analysis and a systematic literature review. The findings indicate that current knowledge is primarily based on perspectives of actors in commerce and systems development. More research is needed on how personal financial behavior change in relation to digital technology, the vulnerability of children and adolescents, and the links between changes in credit behavior and indebtedness. Financial counseling could benefit from an awareness of young adults vulnerability as digital consumers and an extended perception of financial literacy that encompasses requirements of digital society. Policymakers need to be aware of the consequences of digital measurability.

  • Following the Footnotes : A Bibliometric Analysis of Citation Patterns in Literary Studies
  • 2012
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis provides an in-depth study of the possibilities of applying bibliometric methods to the research field of literary studies. The four articles that constitute the backbone of this thesis focus on different aspects of references and citations in literary studies: from the use of references in the text to citation patterns among 34 literature journals. The analysis covers both an Anglo-Saxon context as well as research in Swedish literary studies, and the materials used include Web of Science data, references in the Swedish literature journal TFL (Tidskrift för Litteraturvetenskap) and applications to the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet). A study is also made of the influence of one single publication—Walter Benjamin’s Illuminations—and its impact in literary studies and in wider academia. The results from the four articles are elaborated upon using a theoretical framework that focuses on differences in the social and intellectual organization of research fields. According to these theories literary studies can be described as a fragmented, heterogenic, interdisciplinary and ‘rural’ field with a diverse audience. The fragmented and rural organization of the field is reflected in low citation frequencies as well as in the difficulties in discerning research specialities in co-citation mappings, while the analysis of the intellectual base (highly cited authors) is an example of the heterogenic and interdisciplinary character of the field, as it includes authors from many fields across the humanities and the social sciences. The thesis emphasizes that bibliometric studies of research fields in the humanities need to incorporate non-English and non-journal publications in order to produce valid and fair results. Moreover, bibliometric methods must be modified in accordance with the organization of research in a particular field, and differences in referencing practices and citation patterns ought to be considered. Consequently, it is advised that bibliometric measures for evaluating research in these fields should, if used at all, be applied with great caution.

  • Entrepreneurship: Exploring the knowledge base
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Research Policy. - : Elsevier BV. - 0048-7333. ; 41:7, s. 1154-1181
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Entrepreneurship research has a long tradition and since the 1980s the field has grown significantly. In this study we identify the 'knowledge producers' who have shaped the field over time and their core entrepreneurship research works. A unique database consisting of all references in twelve entrepreneurship 'handbooks' (or state-of-the-art books) has been developed. The chapters in these handbooks were written by experts within the field, and it can be assumed that the most frequently cited references represent 'core knowledge' with relevance to entrepreneurship research. From our analysis, it appears that entrepreneurship is a rather changeable field of research, closely linked to disciplines such as 'management studies' and 'economics'. Over time, the field has become more formalized with its own core knowledge, research specialities and an increasing number of 'insider works'. However, it is still based on some fairly old theoretical frameworks imported from mainstream disciplines, although during the last decade we have seen the emergence of a number of new field-specific concepts and theories. We argue that to successfully develop entrepreneurship research in the future, we need to relate new research opportunities to earlier knowledge within the field, which calls for a stronger 'knowledge-based' focus. We would also like to see greater integration between the fields of entrepreneurship and innovation studies in the future. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Innovation and Entrepreneurship Studies: One or Two Fields of Research?
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 7th European Conference on Innovation and Entrepreneurship. ; 7, s. 420-429
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Innovation and industrial dynamics have grown in importance over the last 40-50 years as we have moved towards a more knowledge intensive society. In an effort to understand these developments in society new research fields have emerged such as innovation and entrepreneurship studies. In general, these two research fields are regarded as rather closely interlinked. In this study we elaborate on the question: Should innovation and entrepreneurship be seen as one or two fields of research? We have taken a cognitive approach in which we analyze the knowledge platforms in innovation and entrepreneurship studies. We use a methodology in which we have built a unique database consisting of all references in twelve “state-of-the-art” books in entrepreneurship. The chapters in these “state-of-the-art” books are written by experts within the field, and it can be assumed that the most frequently cited references in these chapters represent “core knowledge” in entrepreneurship research. We have analyzed the references cited in these chapters in order to identify core contributors and core works within entrepreneurship research. In addition, we have compared our results with a similar study conducted by Fagerberg et al. (2012) on the knowledge basis in the field of innovation studies. The study shows that we are talking about two more or less separate fields of research. Despite common roots in Schumpeter and some interrelated works, the two fields seem to have drifted apart over the last decades. However, there seems to be some elements of overlaps, for example, in the interest in the evolutionary approaches, and in the interest in topics such as innovation management (corporate entrepreneurship) and in technology-based ventures.
