  • Key aspects of free and open source enterprise resource planning systems
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Free and Open Source Enterprise Resource Planning: Systems and Strategies. - : IGI Global. - 9781613504864 - 1613504861 - 9781613504871 ; , s. 1-17
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter introduces basic differences between Free/Open Source Enterprise Resources Planning systems (FOS-ERP) and Proprietary ERP (P-ERP), revisiting the previous work of Carvalho (2008). Taking into account that some years has passed and the economic downturn came, it updates key aspects of FOS-ERP under both vendor and adopter perspectives. Like its predecessor, this chapter contributes to broaden the discussion around FOS-ERP, showing that its differences from its proprietary counterpart go beyond the cost factor.

  • Management of Information Systems Outsourcing : Evaluation of Lessons Learned from a Boundary Spanning Perspective
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Electronic Journal of Information Systems Evaluation. - Reading, UK : Academic Publishing International. - 1566-6379. ; 15:1, s. 63-73
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Even if outsourcing is a well-researched phenomenon, it can be stated that evaluation studies on IS outsourcing relationships are scarce. From a description of two IS outsourcing relationship cases, a set of lessons learned are presented. A boundary spanning perspective is then used when evaluating these lessons learned in the client-supplier outsourcing relationships and thereby adding a “new” theoretical perspective on outsourcing relationships. The evaluation is concluded in a set of propositions that present the boundary spanning perspective of the lessons learned. The aim of these propositions is to act as both a guiding tool for how to further develop boundary spanning roles in outsourcing relationships and to act as a base for future research on outsourcing relationships.

  • Using Simulation and Digital Twins to Innovate: Are we Getting Smarter?
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - Winter Simulation Conference. - 0891-7736. ; 2021-December
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital Twins have recently emerged as a major new area of innovation. Digital Twins are often found at the core of 'smart' solutions that have also emerged as major areas of innovation. Modeling and Simulation (MS) approaches create a model of a real-world system that is linked to data sources and is used to simulate and predict the behavior of its real-world counterpart. On the face of it Digital Twins and MS appear to be similar, if not the same. Is this actually the case? Are the two fields really separate or is Digital Twin research re-inventing the 'MS wheel'? To investigate these relationships, in this panel we will explore some contemporary innovations with Digital Twins and discuss whether or not Digital Twins is a contemporary 'refresh' or 'rebranding' of MS or if there are exciting new synergies.

  • Analysing the antecedents to digital platform implementation for resilient and sustainable manufacturing supply chains - An IDEF0 modelling approach
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - 0959-6526. ; 429
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Digital platforms offer opportunities to enhance the resilience of manufacturing supply chains facing complexity, data sharing challenges, external stressors (e.g., resource scarcity, geo-political factors), emerging risks and environmental sustainability. Despite the growing importance of digital platforms for industrial value creation, limited research has focused on their practical application in this context. Furthermore, a comprehensive understanding of the holistic factors crucial for successful implementation is lacking. Through a qualitative empirical research approach involving three case companies in a manufacturing value chain, this study examines the challenges, requirements, and opportunities associated with leveraging digital platforms for resilient supply chains. Additionally, the paper demonstrates the use of a structured modelling technique, IDEF0, to identify interconnected antecedents that support the use of digital platforms in building resilience within manufacturing supply chains. The findings contribute to advancing knowledge in resilience modelling and dynamic capabilities for resilience, along with providing valuable insights for practitioners seeking to harness the potential of digital platforms for improved supply chain resilience.

  • Empowering resilient crisis response training through purposefully designed boundary objects in a simulation-gaming exercise approach : Supporting ad-hoc team interaction
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ECCE 2021. - New York, NY : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9781450387576 ; , s. 1-6
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper reports on experiences of creating resilience-empowering simulation-gaming exercises concerning disruptions in the payment system. The aim of the exercises was to utilize gaming-simulation as a training environment where teams of practitioners can learn to develop in-depth understanding of systemic interaction (i.e., cascading effects of disruptions) and learn how to develop collaborative resilience across many different critical infrastructures. Interaction between different stakeholders in the payment system, such as business owners, banks, municipality crisis managers are considered as the foundation for building collaborative resilience. Designing the exercises in such a way that they encourage and support such interactions are therefore seen as a primary design goal. This paper describes lessons learned from the process of conducting the 17 exercises in terms of creating a well-balance simulation and an immersive experience.

  • Mitigating Escalation of Cascading Effects of a Payment Disruption Across Other Critical Infrastructures : Lessons Learned in 15 Simulation-Games
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Critical Information Infrastructures Security. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030376697 - 9783030376703 ; , s. 110-121
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A disruption in one critical infrastructure can quickly lead to cascading effects in several other ones. Much research has been done to analyze dependencies between different critical infrastructures, but little is known about how to mitigate escalation and cascading effects across several critical infrastructures, i.e. how to develop collective critical infrastructure resilience. This research presents the results of 15 simulation-games where groups of 6 to 8 field experts from different sectors were challenged to collaboratively manage a disruption in the payment system that quickly affected food distribution, fuel distribution, transport, health care et cetera. Teams discussed possible strategies, which next were implemented in a computer simulation. Teams could influence the sequence of events on 4 decision points during a 10 day scenario, and play the same scenario several times to test alternative solutions. Each simulation-game session lasted a full day. Data analysis involved the recorded team discussions as well as computer simulation logs of the implemented decisions and their impacts. The results show how escalation and the severity of cascading effects largely depends on the quality of the early crisis response and not so much on the initial disruption. Also, it is shown how cross sectorial collaboration is required. Responses where groups focus too much on cascading effects in one area lead too poor overall performance for society at large. Groups tend to overbalance their mitigating strategies initially, until they arrive at a more balanced strategy that covers challenges in several different critical infrastructures from an integral perspective.

  • Towards sustainable servitization: A literature review of methods and frameworks
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Procedia CIRP. - : Elsevier BV. - 2212-8271. ; 104, s. 283-288
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Service-based business models have attracted growing interest as means to capture sustainable value. There is still unclear terminology and lack of understanding on how servitization can locate sustainability as central value. The purpose of this study is to consolidate the terminology and methods for servitization, to identify factors and elements that contribute to a sustainability perspective. The followed methodology includes a comprehensive literature review, further analyzed through a conceptual framework using an evidence-based approach. The findings of this study will clarify existing terminologies and frameworks while supporting the development of service-based business models that avoid the sustainability paradox of servitization.

  • Digital Twin for Smart Manufacturing: the Practitioner's Perspective
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition, Proceedings (IMECE). ; 2B-2020
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The manufacturing sector is experiencing a technological paradigm shift, where new information technology (IT) concepts can help digitize product design, production systems, and manufacturing processes. One of such concepts is Digital Twin and researchers have made some advancement on both its conceptual development and technological implementations. However, in practice, there are many different definitions of the digital-twin concept. These different definitions have created a lot of confusion for practitioners, especially small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Therefore, the adoption and implementation of the digital-twin concept in manufacturing have been difficult and slow. In this paper, we report our findings from a survey of companies (both large and small) regarding their understanding and acceptance of the digital-twin concept. Five supply-chain companies from discrete manufacturing and one trade organization representing suppliers in the automotive business were interviewed. Their operations have been studied to understand their current digital maturity levels and articulate their needs for digital solutions to stay competitive. This paper presents the results of the research including the viewpoints of these companies in terms of opportunities and challenges for implementing digital twins.

  • State-of-the-art on product-service systems and digital technologies
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sustainable Production, Life Cycle Engineering and Management. - Singapore : Springer Singapore. - 2194-055X .- 2194-0541. ; , s. 71-88
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Digitalization has undoubtedly revolutionized the way businesses think, plan and operate. This transition finds origin in the dramatic increase in demand of digital solutions, from those that target every day activities to highly-specific manufacturing processes. The last decades have been characterized for having both researchers and practitioners join efforts to innovate through solutions that are smarter, more productive and more efficient. This constant effort has accompanied the appearance of other impactful phenomena, often considered as a new industrial revolution. In a historically parallel line, companies made leaps towards exploring alternative ways to organize their business structure and relate to their customers. So is the case of Product-Service Systems (PSS), which have called for increased attention in the last years due to the extensive opportunities they offer. Recent literature raises the question of which and how sustainability advantages can be derived from PSS implementation. This study aims to understand the interactions of digital technologies and PSS through a state-of-the-art review. The authors have identified that academic literature encounters the challenge of finding digital technologies under a large cloud of different terminologies, which complicates systematization. Therefore, increased efforts will be applied to clarify the area of study and provide novel insights and results. This process will include the dissemination of enablers, constrains and possible effects of integrating digital technologies with PSS. The authors aim to contribute to the on-going discussion regarding the relationship between PSS and sustainability, specifically in applications that have high impacts, such as digital technologies.
