  • Swedish Advertisers’ Association and Institutional Development of Swedish Export Promotion Advertising 1955-1972
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Marketing and Social Change. - Toronto : Conference on Historical Analysis and Research in Marketing (CHARM). ; , s. 37-40
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Purpose – To analyze the Swedish Advertisers’ Association role in the institutional development ofSwedish export promotion 1955-1972.Methodology/approach – Qualitative method, business interest organization theory, advertisingconcepts related to the historical development of marketing.Findings – Thanks to bottoms-up engagement of members in the mid-1950s, leading to the formationof the knowledge-exchange committee for members of the association (the E-group), the associationbecame crucial in enabling Swedish companies getting access to marketing resources when competingon foreign markets, as well as becoming a key player in supporting the collective export promotionefforts of the Swedish government. The E-Group increased member participation and knowledgeexchange among members, supporting professionalization and legitimacy of advertising practices.Limitations/implications – While based on a national case, the study illustrates how marketingassociations act in an institutional system, while being challenged by member demands to supplythem with adequate resources, highlighting the importance of analyzing both the collectiveorganizations and the political system they are part of to understand the historical development ofmarketing.Originality/ value – The history of export promotion and export advertising is not well studied on aninstitutional level. This study furthers knowledge of this significant aspect of marketing history aswell as the history of political economy, making salient the interaction between the state andorganized business interests in a key aspect of a national economy. This should interest the fields ofmarketing history as well as, business studies, economics and political science. Keywords – Advertising history, business history, export promotion, business associationClassification – Research paper

  • Ecology and the accumulation of capital : thinking capitalism through the web of life
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Capitalism as world-ecology is an effort to move from the “environmental history of” capitalism, or modernity, or the world market, to capitalism AS environmental history. Financial crises, for instance, are not social or economic crises that make their footprint on the rest of nature; they are crises of a key moment of capitalism’s symbolic and material ordering of the relation between humans and the rest of nature. This dialectical alternative views the great movements of modern world history – industrial and agricultural revolutions, successive new imperialisms, the development of the world market – as socio-ecological projects and processes, aimed at reconfiguring nature-society relations. ‘Nature,’ no longer a passive substance upon which humanity leaves its footprint, becomes an active bundle of relations, formed and re-formed through the historically- and geographically-specific movements of humans, with the rest of nature. This entails more than a catalogue of capitalism’s biophysical depredations. It calls for new synthesis that locates the accumulation of capital, the production of nature, and pursuit of power in a singular and differentiated whole. This perspective begins from the premise that capitalism does not act upon nature so much as develop through nature-society relations. Capitalism does not have an ecological regime; it is an ecological regime.

  • Debattens vågor : När tankarna om behovet av en förbättrad personlig hygien växer fram, Sverige 1880-1920
  • 2011
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper presented on the Swedish Economic History Meeting the 26 th of august 2011 in Gothenburg is aiming to explain how the ideas of hygienism, and the ideas of a need of better personal hygiene among the Swedish people, where developed and transformed from statistical data and medical knowledge of the bacteria, to arguments understandable for everyone. By studying and analyzing published literature from the period 1880-1920 it is found that medicine doctors are taking a big part in the development of personal hygienic ideas. The formation of the ideas is passing through three stages during the period. The first period that consists of collecting hygienic data (during the 1880s), the second period consists of educating their colleagues, teachers and the Swedish people (during the 1890s). However, the state seems to have played a very small role until the 1910s, when the idea of a need of better personal hygiene has turned into politics. The study is based on 163 written books, papers, leaflets and articles from the period of 1880-1920.

  • Corporative Privileges Undermined. : The Meaning of Extra-Ordinary Taxation in Sweden in the 17th and 18th Centuries
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: La Fiscalità nell'economia europea. Secc. XIII-XVIII • Fiscal Systems in the European Economy 13th - 18th Centuries.. - 9788884537034
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The point of departure for this paper is the notion that taxation in Sweden in the 17th and 18th centuries was a special case. It was essentially direct, periodic and individual in character. Based on that, the communicative aspects of extra-ordinary taxation are considered. To do something to someone is to make a statement. The solutions to the questions of who should pay, and how much different groups and individuals should pay, can be seen as an articulation of the relationship between different groups or classes. The social distribution of taxation thus had ideological implications. In the course of the 17th century extra-ordinary taxation in Sweden was not only levied on individual peasant households, but it was also targeting specific crafts and professions, particularly civil servants and military officers. In the 18th century this became even more evident, although it was never an unproblematic or uninterrupted process. Thus, extra-ordinary taxation in Sweden tended to undermine corporative privileges, in particular noble privileges. It adhered to the principle that the rich should make a more substan¬tial contribution to the common good than those who had less. In this way, it conveyed a type of christian morality at the same time as it expressed a political program. This process can in turn be related to the pro¬cess in which royal subjects were transformed into citizens.

  • The History of Temporary Work Agencies in Sweden : - A brief overview of political argumentation and legislative processes
  • 2016
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Temporary work agencies, and private placement agencies in Sweden have been regulated in some form since the 1730s with the institution Adress-contoiret with royal privileges, where servants could register for work in Stockholm. In 1935, in coherence with the ILO convention from that time, privately run job centres charging fees from job applicants were banned, as well as work agencies acting as employers offering staffing services to their clients. A few exceptions concerning agencies for musicians and specialist consultants were allowed, but the main political values within the workers’ parties were that workers should not be considered as commodities. This regulation was active until 1993, when the government deregulated this practice. This paper will examine the process of legislation in the Swedish Riksdag concerning work mediation, placement agencies and temporary work agencies. Focus will be on the period from 1900 up to the two legislations of 1935 and 1942. During these formative years, the workers’ movement and their parties, the social democratic party and the communist party, were opposed to all forms of private agencies making profit from this practice. In parliament, motions against this practice were written by MPs from both workers’ parties. The paper is based on studies of parliamentary publications, reports from trade union archives and news paper articles. There were different kinds of temporary work agencies active during these times, both non-profit and profit. Several trade unions and social movements ran their own non-profit practices, e. g. the bakery workers’ trade union or the Fredrika-Bremer-association concerned with women’s emancipation issues. These practices were not the target of the motions in parliament. Instead they concerned agencies making profit from job mediation. Some agencies charged the job applicants a small fee for enlisting, some added a finder’s fee when the contract was written with the new employer, and some acted as employers and let out their employees as staff to their different clients. The issue at hand is that during the first part of the 20th century, the distinction between the parties concerned was between worker, mediator of work, and employer. MPs of the workers’ parties did not seem to make any legal distinction as to whether the workers were employed by the client they were offered to, or if the agency acted as the employer. They rather made a moral distinction and were more concerned with the level of exploitation of the worker than who had the legal responsibility as the employer – the temporary work agency or the agency’s client? This shows a different focus than what is prevalent today.

  • Selected urban centers of the Holy Cross Province in view of the concept of urban hibernation : Wybrane ośrodki miejskie województwa świętokrzyskiego w świetle koncepcji hibernacji miast
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 5th National Conference on Historical Geography (V Ogólnopolska Konferencja Geografii Historycznej), 22-23 June 2017, Łódź, Poland.
Problemy te Autorzy omawiają w kontekście przykładów miast z terenu obecnego województwa świętokrzyskiego – m.in.

  • Swedish Large-Scale Historical Maps as Sources for Archaeological Research : Examples from Gotlandic Maps from 1693-1705
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: The Gotland Papers. - 9789186343071 ; , s. 475-490
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Historical maps are a vital and often used source in a variety of disciplines and applications in Sweden today. For a decade or two, they have moved into the GIS-community. A large scanning project by Lantmäteriverket will make most ofthe maps in Sweden available as raster images. In this article some different applications are presented, which goes beyond the traditional use of historical maps in GIS. These brief examples involve data mining, statistics, retrogressive analysis andhypothesis testing.
