  • Why Do Some Multinational Corporations Relocate Their Headquarters Overseas?
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Strategic Management Journal. - : Wiley. - 0143-2095 .- 1097-0266. ; 27:7, s. 681-700
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the decision by a multinational corporation (MNC) to relocate its business unit and/or corporate HQ overseas. We argue that business unit HQs move overseas in response to changes in the internal configuration of their unit's activities and the demands of the product markets in which they operate, whereas corporate HQs move overseas in response to the demands of external stakeholders, in particular global financial markets and shareholders. Using data on 125 business unit HQs and 35 corporate HQs, we test and find support for these arguments. The research highlights important differences between corporate- and business-level strategy, and it suggests ways in which the theory of the MNC needs to be reconsidered.

  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Small Business Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0921-898X .- 1573-0913. ; 35:3, s. 245-254
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article describes the academic contributions of the 2010 recipient of the Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research, Professor Josh Lerner of the Harvard Business School. Lerner's empirical research on the inter-relationship between venture capital, innovation and entrepreneurship has greatly extended and improved our understanding of one of the major drivers of growth in modern economies. The first part of this article explains Lerner's contributions as regards the structure and organization of the venture capital industry. Later, his most important publications on entrepreneurship, innovation and intellectual property rights are surveyed. Several aspects of Lerner's policy-oriented work are then outlined, before the article closes with a brief conclusion.

  • The evolving domain of entrepreneurship research
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Small Business Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0921-898X .- 1573-0913. ; 41:4, s. 913-930
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Research on entrepreneurship has flourished in recent years and is evolving rapidly. This article explores the history of entrepreneurship research, how the research domain has evolved, and its current status as an academic field. The need to concretize these issues stems partly from a general interest in defining the current research domain and partly from the more specific tasks confronting the prize committee of the Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research. Entrepreneurship has developed in many sub-fields within several disciplines-primarily economics, management/business administration, sociology, psychology, economic and cultural anthropology, business history, strategy, marketing, finance, and geography-representing a variety of research traditions, perspectives, and methods. We present an analytical framework that organizes our thinking about the domain of entrepreneurship research by specifying elements, levels of analysis, and the process/context. An overview is provided of where the field stands today and how it is positioned relative to the existing disciplines and new research fields upon which it draws. Areas needed for future progress are highlighted, particularly the need for a rigorous dynamic theory of entrepreneurship that relates entrepreneurial activity to economic growth and human welfare. Moreover, applied work based on more careful design as well as on theoretical models yielding more credible and robust estimates seems also highly warranted.

  • Regulation, firm dynamics and entrepreneurship
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Law and Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0929-1261 .- 1572-9990. ; 40:1, s. 1-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Entrepreneurship can have important positive effects linked to job creation, wealth and income generation, innovation and industry competitiveness. Scholars and policy-makers around the world have turned to the regulatory environment as a mechanism through which entrepreneurship can be encouraged, grown and its economic benefits harnessed. The effect of regulatory conditions on entrepreneurship however is not well understood, and can be nuanced given the wide range of regulatory tools and possible areas of impact. This paper serves as the introduction to a special issue, which seeks to shed some light on the relationship between regulation, firm dynamics and entrepreneurship. We identify some foundational considerations relevant to this relationship and discuss key questions, followed by a brief overview of each of the papers contained in the special issue.

  • Taxes, tax administrative burdens and new firm formation
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Kyklos (Basel). - : Wiley. - 0023-5962 .- 1467-6435. ; 67:1, s. 1-11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the tax administrative burden and its effect on new firm formation. It is well recognized that entrepreneurship and new firm formation are critical factors in determining economic growth and development. New firm entry into the marketplace enhances welfare in two distinct ways: 1) by promoting innovation, productivity and economic growth and 2) by increasing competition, which lowers prices and expands output. It is also well documented that barriers to entry reduce the likelihood that new firms will enter various sectors. We argue that the burden imposed by tax codes and tax compliance constitutes a barrier to entry that has been neglected in the previous literature. We use data from the World Bank to measure the administrative burden that the complexity of tax policy imposes on new firms. Additionally, we use a measure of new firm formation - entry density. Our data cover 118 countries over a period of six years. We find that the entry rate is significantly reduced by the tax administrative burden and that this effect is unrelated to general taxes on corporate profits and is robust to the inclusion of several important control variables.

  • Philippe Aghion : recipient of the 2016 Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Small Business Economics. - : Springer. - 0921-898X .- 1573-0913. ; 48:1, s. 1-8
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Professor Philippe Aghion is the 2016 recipient of the Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research, consisting of 100,000 Euros and a statuette designed by the internationally renowned Swedish sculptor Carl Milles. He is one of the most influential researchers worldwide in economics in the last couple of decades. His research has advanced our understanding of the relationship between firm-level innovation, entry and exit on the one hand, and productivity and growth on the other. Aghion has thus accomplished to bridge theoretical macroeconomic growth models with a more complete and consistent microeconomic setting. He is one of the founding fathers of the pioneering and original contribution referred to as Schumpeterian growth theory. Philippe Aghion has not only contributed with more sophisticated theoretical models, but also provided empirical evidence regarding the importance of entrepreneurial endeavours for societal prosperity, thereby initiating a more nuanced policy discussion concerning the interdependencies between entrepreneurship, competition, wealth and growth.

  • The wealth of regions : geographic concentration , entrepreneurship and regional growth
  • 2007
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis consists of three individual essays and an introductory chapter. The essays contribute to the current vein of empirical literature on economic geography and entrepreneurship. In two of the three essays the empirical analysis is preformed using panel data cross tabulated over years, regions and industries; whereas the third essay use data distributed over years and regions. The first essay implements a measure of geographic concentration and investigates the extent of concentration in Swedish industries and the relationship to economic growth specified as labour productivity. The second essay focuses on the composition of industry concentration. Using a similar measure as in the first essay the co-location of Swedish industries are investigated as well as the relationship to economic growth. The third essay explores the connection between entrepreneurship and regional growth – measured as employment growth – in Sweden and the U.S.

  • Agglomeration, Relative Wage Costs and Foreign Direct Investment : Evidence from Swedish MNCs 1974-1998
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Journal of Industry, Competition and Trade. - USA : Springer Nature. - 1566-1679 .- 1573-7012. ; 9:3, s. 197-217
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the relationship between agglomeration economies and relative wage costs in influencing location of multinational corporations. An inflow of firms to certain regions and industries is likely to increase demand for labor. If mobility of labor is low increased costs can be expected to deter additional inflows of firms, albeit agglomeration economies may compensate for higher wages. Despite its important policy implications this relationship has to our knowledge not been exposed to empirical testing. The empirical analysis finds that foreign direct investment has become increasingly sensitive to differences in wage cost across industrialized countries, but also that agglomeration economies related to knowledge externalities positively influences higher costs. The relative strength of these two forces impacts the spatial distribution of production.
