  • Green IS : steps towards a research agenda
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Industrial informatics design, use and innovation. - Hershey : IGI Global. - 9781615206926 - 9781616923143 - 9781615206933 ; , s. 187-195
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this chapter, the authors investigate the role of ICT in dealing with environmental challenges facing contemporary industrial organizations. Green IS research can essentially be divided into two groups, focusing on technology per se or on providing tools that decreases environmental impact. Building on a planned research project the authors propose innovation of ICT-based services, and especially collaborative services, as useful strategies for providing firms with sense and respond capabilities in relation to environmental challenges. They also argue research that research relevance and multi-disciplinary competencies are key themes that IS researcher needs to acknowledge in order to contribute to practitioners efforts.

  • Orchestrating digital innovation: The case of the Swedish Center for Digital Innovation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Communications of the Association for Information Systems. - : Association for Information Systems. - 1529-3181. ; 48, s. 248-264
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is increasing interest in how digital innovation is facilitated and enacted in networks of diverse actors, i.e. heterogenous networks. However, while there is considerable evidence that firms can build key capabilities through engagement with external partners, we find a dearth of studies on how digital innovation is orchestrated in situations where an academic unit plays a facilitating role in the heterogenous network. We address this question employing a dynamic capabilities approach, and focusing on experiences from a national academic initiative, the Swedish Center for Digital Innovation (SCDI). SCDI was formed in 2013 and has adopted an engaged scholarship approach and a combination of activities designed to increase digital capabilities among partner organizations. We argue that the acquisition of new knowledge through external and internal sources stimulates firms and public sector organizations engaged in digital innovation to integrate such new knowledge with existing knowledge. Specifically, we demonstrate how SCDI’s core activities create increased integrative capabilities for the involved stakeholders, as well as offer lessons-learned and recommendations for academic units that wish to orchestrate digital innovation.

  • Organizational dimensions of e-maintenance : a multi-contextual perspective
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Systems Assurance Engineering and Management. - : Springer. - 0975-6809 .- 0976-4348. ; 1:3, s. 210-218
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A key objective for e-maintenance efforts is to align maintenance processes with business- and operational processes in order to reach organizational objectives. In the context of the process- and manufacturing industry a key objective for firms is to avoid downtime and to make sure all critical production equipment is up and running. To this end, e-maintenance has become increasingly important for the process- and manufacturing industry. Successful e-maintenance is realized by the organizational use of advanced information technology-solutions which aims at moving maintenance work from being primarily reactive (e.g. to react and respond to equipment breakdowns) to predictive (e.g. to predict when equipment are in need of maintenance before it breaks down). Building on a collaborative project with industrial organizations in the pulp and paper and the mining industry this paper explores organizational opportunities and challenges associated with the design and implementation of IT-based services for remote diagnostics of industrial equipment. We observe opportunities and challenges related to organizational innovation and learning. The paper introduces a multi-contextual perspective to better understand the opportunities and challenges associated with organizational learning and innovation. We argue that in order for e-maintenance services to be successful it must not only build on leading-edge technological solutions but also be built on an explicit model for how the maintenance work is organized and how e-maintenance efforts are aligned with overall organizational objectives.

  • Living on the edge : balancing rigor and relevance within an action research context
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Industrial informatics design use and innovation. - Hershey : IGI Global. - 9781615206926 - 9781616923143 - 9781615206933 ; , s. 102-109
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper describes the efforts in ensuring research relevance by means of an industrial PhD project. The project is aiming at strengthening the relevance of research and development by educating scientists with an insight into the practical aspects of research and development and by developing networks in which knowledge can be effectively disseminated between industry and university. The project is taking its stand with an empirical and industrial centre with a technical solution called Dynamo, which is delivered by the company Logica. Dynamo, an intelligent portal that seamlessly connects systems, user information, roles and rule sets, and its context will provide a rich and useful empirical source from which to launch the action research process. The project contains two distinct stakeholders – industry and academy – jointly guiding the project and making sure that both worlds get a result that is in line with and contributes to their business. To this end two key stakeholders that have taken on the role as gatekeepers of rigor and relevance respectively. Taking position in the middle of the action is the PhD student who, by living the life of both researcher and consultant, will take on the role of balancing rigor and relevance. The chosen research approach together with the complex implementation context together with makes it crucial to take on an open minded selection.

  • Managing unbounded digital transformation : exploring the role of tensions in a digital transformation initiative in the forestry industry
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Information Technology and People. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0959-3845 .- 1758-5813. ; 36:8, s. 43-68
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: Prior research has highlighted the pervasive importance of digital technologies in business and societal settings, but their enabling role in digital transformation, and effective forms of organization to address tensions that arise during attempts to promote it, have been insufficiently explored. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to investigate how and why tensions affect clusters established to foster digital transformation.Design/methodology/approach: Empirical data were acquired through a qualitative exploratory holistic single case study, focused on the Swedish Cluster of Forest Technology. This included interviews with informants, selected by homogeneous purposive sampling, and event observation to investigate the personal perspectives of representatives of every company engaged in the cluster, followed by a thematic analysis of their comments.Findings: The case study revealed three major tensions, between knowledge flow, collaboration and competition, but also others that were interrelated with those major tensions, related to matters such as trust and protection of intellectual property, power equality and hierarchy, and networks that must be managed in digital transformation efforts.Originality/value: The paper extends understanding of the tensions that arise, and their management, in digital transformation processes.

  • Barriers to continuance use of cloud computing : evidence from two case studies
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Information & Management. - : Elsevier. - 0378-7206 .- 1872-7530. ; 60:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Continuous use of cloud computing and cloud sourcing has received limited research attention compared to cloud adoption. There are indications that cloud sourcing benefits are not easy to reap in continuous use for companies, calling for more research on the continuance use of cloud computing. The current study is one of the first studies of the continuance use of cloud computing processes at the organizational level, contributing to the management and business research literature on cloud computing. In particular, the present study has contributed with two case studies verifying the existence of barriers and more importantly identifying an additional type of barrier: management process barriers (MP), i.e., lack of objectives and strategies for cloud sourcing and lack of organizing cloud vendor communication. Overcoming or reducing management process barriers guides the continuance use of cloud computing process in a strategic direction for the company and enables cloud-related innovation. As a contribution, our research builds on and extends extant research by providing a TOMPE framework of barriers to the continuance use of cloud computing (based and modified from the technology–organization–environment (TOE) framework, by complementing it with the identified management process barriers).

  • Organizational effects of information technology : investigating information technology use in the context of lean manufacturing
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Industrial informatics design, use and innovation. - : IGI Global. - 9781615206926 - 9781616923143 - 9781615206933 ; , s. 157-173
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this chapter is to better understand the enabling and inhibiting impacts IT has on lean manufacturing. This chapter provides a rich picture of a paper mill producing liner reels and the impact of a reel administration system on the manufacturing process. It is important that an IT tool supporting lean manufacturing reflects its organization. When it does the IT tool can act as an enabler of organizational change that in turn increase productivity and the production quality, when it fails to do so it inhibits organizational change and hampers the quality of production. The conclusion is that framing the definition of high production quality regarding product and process is important and that teambuilding would be a contribution to this end by enhancing perspective taking among the employees.
