  • Systems Thinking Benefits in Supply Change Management : An illustration of the viable systems model in a supply chain
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Intelligent Systems Technologies and Applications. - : Inderscience Publishers. - 1740-8865 .- 1740-8873. ; 6:3/4, s. 227-248
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Existing product development models are solely an organisational matter. They do not take into consideration the whole Supply chain (SC) and its different actors. In this article, we investigate how Supply Chain Management and Viable System Model (VSM) can support and create an effective use of information in product development and hence identify critical linkages in the SC. The aim is to introduce VSM as a framework that enables an analysis of companies’ SCs and visualise vital inter-organisational relationships that should be integrated in product development.

  • Being an Archivist in our Times - Trying to Manage Long-Term Digital Preservation
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Public Information Systems. - Sundsvall : Mittuniversitetet. - 1653-4360. ; 3:2, s. 47-61
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Information technology offers the possibility to produce and archive more recorded information than ever before. Thus it is has become feasible to preserve and have access to information in almost unlimited amounts. In sharp contrast, the situation today suggests that societal data has become significantly less accessible than was previously the case. This is both ironic and tragic. In this paper, we recognize that the cultural heritage is at risk, given current circumstances as revealed through observation and dialogue with an archivist. While there are many projects, cultural heritage institutions, government agencies and private enterprises involved in an ambitious research agenda, the majority of these are focussed on technical solutions. In contrast, we provide an indepth point of view of an archivist who is expected to preserve information in order to safeguard the long-term preservation of the cultural heritage. This report reveals the challenges as well as the systemic implications related to the full implementation of the Archival Information Systems guidelines, that fully involve archivists and users in systems design features and functionalities, in order to enable the advancement of longterm digital preservation.

  • Participatory Design : in Need of Angels
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Travelling Thoughtfulness. - Umeå, Sweden : Umeå University. - 9789174590944 ; , s. 115-134
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • There is a sentence by Bob Dylan – the times they are a-changin’. This is true also for participatory design (PD) – today design projects are distributed between sites and people, and extended in time. PD is now diverse and multi-directional and in need of re-thinking designer responsibility. How to change our methods in line with concerned personnel’s abilities and ways of expressing themselves? Yet, still it is needed someone that overlooks and ensure the PD process. This is especially important when a PD project results in new experiences for people. We suggest that systems designers’ shoulder the responsibility as an angel, which we use as a metaphor for a person with the overall responsibility for the PD process. As part of this we suggest that systems designers would gain by adapting the PD process in line with the PAR methodology and by the use of Soft Systems Methodology’s Rich Picture building.

  • The Bureaucracy of Social Media - An Empirical Account in Organizations
  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis examines organizational use of social media. It focuses on developing an understanding of the ways by which social media are used within formal organizational settings. From the vantage point of this thesis such an understanding can be achieved by looking at tensions and incompatibilities that might potentially exist between social media and organization because of their distinct characteristics. It is argued that the distinct characteristics of social media (e.g. openness, transparency, flexibility, etc.) and organization (e.g., hierarchy, formal relationships, standard procedures, etc.) may engender tensions and incompatibilities that affect the ways of using social media and their potential in organizations. The main premise here is that the possibilities, behaviors, and practices afforded by social media are recognizably different in nature from common and established organizational practices, behaviors, norms, and routines.Through a structurational understanding of organizational use of social media, influenced by Giddens’ theory of structuration and Orlikowski’s practice lens for studying technology use, this thesis offers the perspective of immiscibility to capture tensions and incompatibilities driven by the distinctive characteristics of social media and organization. It basically offers a way of seeing social media use in organizations as a dynamic, in- practice interplay between social media and organization characteristics. One key argument in this thesis is that the immiscible interplay of social media and organization, produces, at least in transition, ‘a bureaucracy of social media’. Social media, it is argued, are used in ways that are essentially bureaucratic, reflecting and also reinforcing established characteristics of formal organizations through the production and reproduction of structures which are driven by the immiscible interplay. The development of such an understanding was achieved through multiple research studies focusing on the use of the wiki technology for knowledge collaboration and sharing in two large, multinational organizations: CCC and IBM. A number of qualitative methods were used in these studies to collect empirical evidence from the two organizations including interviews, field visits, observations, and document analysis. The overarching contribution of this thesis centers on offering a unique way of understanding organizational use of social media by putting forward tensions and incompatibilities between social media and organization and also by providing an understanding of how such tensions and incompatibilities affect the potential for change by social media.

  • Organizing for Future Access to the Cultural Hewritage
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 31th Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia, IRIS 31. - : Mittuniversitetet. - 9789186073121
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How to organize with the aim of securing the digital cultural heritage is the main interest of this paper. We provide a description of the current situation at an authority that deals with this question, and its personnels’ view of their assignment. The objective for our analysis and discussion is to explore the suitability of the Viable System Model as organizing principle for long-term digital preservation. We have found that the model elucidates several important aspects, such as coordinating functions and information and communication channels. In addition it provides the advantage of a holistic perspective, as well as attention to the environment. These aspects are crucial for long-term digital preservation. Therefore, we find the model suitable since it clarifies necessary processes and functions if the digital cultural heritage is to prevail.

  • The information life cycle : issues in long-term digital preservation
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Arkiv, samhälle och forskning. - 0349-0505. ; :1, s. 17-29
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper a new view of the life cycle of information is described. Information never dies. The constituentes for information are: the context in which information is born and flows, internal attributes which enrich and gives better understanding of information, and the tools used for managing ditributing, dissemination, access and availability of information.
