Medicine At A Distance In Sweden: Spatiotemporal Matters In Accomplishing Working Telemedicine
2011
Ingår i: Science Studies. - 0786-3012. ; 24:2, s. 43-62
Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat) abstract
This paper examines the accomplishment of making technology work, using the discourse around telemedicine in Swedish healthcare during 1994-2003. The paper will compare four projects launched in the mid-1990s and policymakers’ visions of healthcare through telemedicine. I will employ a sociotechnical approach developed within Actor-Network Theory that understands functioning technology not as something intrinsic but as an outcome of an ongoing process of negotiations. In the paper, I will extend the sociotechnical approach of what constitutes working technology to include spatiotemporal matters. I will also approach the closely related issue of space that has become a concern of Actor-Network Theory scholars interested in the accomplishment and continued workings of technology as it travels. In this discussion, an emphasis on fixed relations (network space) has been challenged by investigations into changing relations (fluid space). This paper suggests that in order to travel well, technology must be both fixed and fluid.⁰

Towards an agile method for ITSM self-assessment : A Design Science Research Approach
2013
Ingår i: Proceedings of ICMLG 2013 The International Conference on Management, Leadership and Governance.. - : ICMLG.
Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat) abstract
IT Service Management (ITSM) is an expensive field where small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) need to become more efficient in their ITSM related work in order to cut costs and improve quality. The focus of this paper is to suggest a solution to the scarcity of process improvement methods dedicated to ITSM-processes in SMEs. The solution consists of an agile self-assessment method designed and evaluated in accordance with Design Science Research. The aim of the method is to support SMEs in their attempt to evaluate and improve their quality of ITSM processes. The findings show that the method creates opportunities for organizations to improve their ITSM processes. The method can be used to identify process gaps in comparison to standards for ITSM. It can also be used for benchmarking purposes within an organization as well as it can guide an organization’s improvement efforts. The method also depicts a standard that is easy for SMEs to understand and to use as guidance (with ITSM specific examples). Finally, the method enables SMEs to implement standards for ITSM in a resource-efficient way. Based on empirical evidence from applying the method the conclusion is that the method is useful for the intended target group and that the method agrees well with theories within the field.

Social Media Supporting Democratic Dialogue
2013
Ingår i: Ambiguous Technologies. - Lisbon : Autónoma University. ; , s. 36-43
Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat) abstract
The term of “social media” appears in newspapers and magazines everyday and the huge number of people use social media actively in daily life. Nowadays, in the highly Information and Communication Technology (ICT) developed country Japan, Japanese people enroll in social media and evolve a new way of communicating with others based on the “virtual” social distance between them. Among social media, Twitter has been focusing on its strong power as the tool for political change recent years. While Twitter has of-expressed problems as well as the “traditional” social media, it is characterized by the limited number of characters, strong propagation and optional reciprocity. Those characteristics stimulate people’s communication online and bring about opportunities for social interaction and democratic dialogue. On the other hand, in the deluge of information, we need to nurture skills to utilize critical and rational way of thinking through dialogue not only between others also between themselves internally. This study explores characteristics of social media and differences between “traditional” social media and Twitter, and how the difference affects people’s information behavior in Japan.

The digital shaping of humanities research : The emergence of Topic Modeling within historical studies
2014
Ingår i: DASTS 2014 Conference: “Enacting Futures”, Danish Association for Science and Technology Studies (DASTS), Roskilde University, 12–13 June 2014, Roskilde, Denmark. ; , s. 52-52
Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat) abstract
The epistemological affordances of technologies such as the Internet and computers are – yet again – offering promising and threatening opportunities to reshape humanistic research. The large digitization efforts within humanities has created new kinds of ‘big data’ textual source materials only a ’mouse click away’ (e.g. Google books, JSTOR or the Bodleian Digital Library). This socio-technical development presents new epistemological challenges for research within various humanities disciplines. To aid this effort, some researchers are turning to new kinds of (digital) data-mining methods to tackle this complexity. The subject of this study, topic modeling (TM) is such a digital humanities method. The presentation systematically surveys academic applications of topic modelling – an algorithm that parameterizes word concurrences – within historical research. The aim is to answer questions such as; what are the stated benefits of TM, whether there is qualitative differences between TM and traditional methods, and what new epistemological challenges TM creates for historical research? Our starting point is 2004 with the first peer-reviewed historical article and end point in 2013 with the publication of a special journal issue on applications of TM. Our preliminary results show that TM indeed affords new possibilities of innovative qualitative approaches in historical research. However, for all practical purposes TM is, as of yet, not a ‘black-boxed technology’ as many of its key variables still lack general agreed upon standards. This incorporation of TM within historical studies appears to be analogues to earlier developments in disciplines such as; human geography or psychology. These earlier introductions of quantitative tools and methodologies into previously qualitatively dominated disciplines ultimately changed the character of these disciplines. If this will occur within historical studies or humanities remains to be seen.

Social media for user innovation in Living Labs : a framework to support user recruitment and commitment
2013
Ingår i: Proceedings of the XXIV ISPIM conference. - Lappeenranta : Lappeenranta University of Technology Press. - 9789522654212
Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat) abstract
Social media are becoming an increasingly relevant channel for user involvement. However, their uptake in Living Labs environments, as a means to engage users in innovation processes, is still limited. The aim of this paper is to explore challenges and opportunities related to the usage of social media for user involvement in co-creative processes, The findings presented emerge both from the available literature and case studies, and emphasise four different dimensions influencing user engagement: facilitator, community, platform and innovation process. Based on these dimensions, the authors propose a basic framework, intended as the point of departure for taking the next step toward the construction and verification of theoretical constructs that can help inform and guide future innovation projects.

The liability of politicalness : Legitimacy and legality in piracy-proximate entrepreneurship
2014
Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1476-1297 .- 1741-8054. ; 22:4, s. 408-425
Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat) abstract
This article explores three entrepreneurial ventures that have evolved in proximity to online piracy. In reviewing the respective cases of Spotify, Skype, and The Pirate Bay, the argument outlines the radically divergent strategies with which the entrepreneurs have sought to legitimise their ventures and underlying technologies. The article concludes that: 1) the context of practices labelled ‘pirate’ are paradigmatic examples of fields in which entrepreneurs must work exceptionally hard to legitimise themselves; 2) in this context, it is crucial that the role of law is analytically isolated from the role of institutionalised legitimacy; 3) success in legitimisation is largely dependent upon the entrepreneur’s ability to demonstrate that the venture is governed by ‘the natural order’ of the economy. It is further argued that piracy-proximate ventures may contribute to the entrepreneurship field, inasmuch as they teeter on the border of being considered too disruptive, and thus suffer from a ‘liability of politicalness’.

Expanding the HCI Agenda in Healthcare
2014
Ingår i: 2014 IEEE 27th International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems. - : IEEE. - 9781479944354 ; , s. 382-385
Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat) abstract
Designing technology for use in healthcare, and its evaluation in the healthcare setting, deserves special attention because of the nature of the special context of use. Biological hazards and the risk of infection, issues of privacy and security, system response times, as well as human factors and patient safety are identified as areas deserving of special attention. We give examples and quote from clinician interviews for illustration, and we argue that increased focus from the HCI community on these areas will bring tangible benefits of health information systems to healthcare staff, and ultimately improve patient services.

Statistical Analysis of Requirements Prioritization for Transition to Web Technologies : A Case Study in an Electric Power Organization
2014
Ingår i: Software Quality. Model-Based Approaches for Advanced Software and Systems Engineering. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319036021 - 9783319036014 ; , s. 63-84
Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat) abstract
Transition from an existing IT system to modern Web technologies provides multiple benefits to an organization and its customers. Such a transition in a large organization involves various groups of stakeholders who may prioritize differently the requirements of the software under development. In our case study, the organization is a leading domestic company in the field of electricity power. The existing online system supports the customer service along with the technical activities and has more than 1,500 registered users, while simultaneous access can be reached by 300 users. The paper presents an empirical study where 51 employees in different roles prioritize 18 software requirements using hierarchical cumulative voting. The goal of this study is to test significant differences in prioritization between groups of stakeholders. Statistical methods involving data transformation, ANOVA and Discriminant Analysis were applied to data. The results showed significant differences between roles of the stakeholders in certain requirements.
