  • From Vision to Transition : Exploring the Potential for Public Information Services to Facilitate Sustainable Urban Transport
  • 2014
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: Policy initiatives to promote sustainable travel through the use of Internet based public information systems have increased during the last decade. Stockholm, in being one of the first cities in Europe to implement an Internet based service for facilitating sustainable travel is believed to be a good candidate for an analysis of key issues for developing sustainable travel planning services to the public.Aim: This thesis investigates the past development of two Stockholm based public information systems and their services in order to draw lessons on how to better provide for a public information service geared towards facilitating  environmentally sustainable travel planning through information and communications technology. The overall goal of the thesis is to contribute to an understanding on how to better design and manage current and future attempts at facilitating sustainable travel planning services based on historical case studies.Approach: The thesis draws ideas from the concept of organizational responsiveness – an organization’s ability to listen, understand and respond to demands put to it by its internal and external stakeholders – in order to depict how well or not the two public information systems and their owners have adapted to established norms and values of their surroundings. Results: Overall, the findings from the historical case studies suggest that organizations attempting to provide sustainable travel planning to the public need to design and manage their systems in such a way that it responds to shifting demands on how to provide for information. Implementing and embedding new technologies involves complex processes of change both at the micro level – for users and practitioners of the service – and at the meso level for the involved public service organizations themselves. This condition requires a contextualist framework to analyze and understand organizational, contextual and cultural issues involved in the adoption of new technologies and procedures. Conclusions: The thesis concludes with a discussion on how the findings from the historical case studies may provide lessons for both current and future attempts at providing public information systems geared towards facilitating environmentally sustainable travel planning to the public. Historical examples and issues concerning collective intelligence and peer to peer based forms of designing, producing and supervising public information services identified throughout the study are looked upon and discussed in terms of their possible role in increasing the potential for public information services to facilitate sustainable urban transport.

  • Situational Method Engineering
  • 2014
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • While previously available methodologies for software – like those published in the early days of object technology – claimed to be appropriate for every conceivable project, situational method engineering (SME) acknowledges that most projects typically have individual characteristics and situations. Thus, finding the most effective methodology for a particular project needs specific tailoring to that situation. Such a tailored software development methodology needs to take into account all the bits and pieces needed for an organization to develop software, including the software process, the input and output work products, the people involved, the languages used to describe requirements, design, code, and eventually also measures of success or failure. The authors have structured the book into three parts. Part I deals with all the basic concepts, terminology and overall ideas underpinning situational method engineering. As a summary of this part, they present a formal meta-model that enables readers to create their own quality methods and supporting tools. In Part II, they explain how to implement SME in practice, i.e., how to find method components and put them together and how to evaluate the resulting method. For illustration, they also include several industry case studies of customized or constructed processes, highlighting the impact that high-quality engineered methods can have on the success of an industrial software development. Finally, Part III summarizes some of the more recent and forward-looking ideas. This book presents the first summary of the state of the art for SME. For academics, it provides a comprehensive conceptual framework and discusses new research areas. For lecturers, thanks to its step-by-step explanations from basics to the customization and quality assessment of constructed methods, it serves as a solid basis for comprehensive courses on the topic. For industry methodologists, it offers a reference guide on features and technologies to consider when developing in-house software development methods or customising and adopting off-the-shelf ones.

  • Exploring REA and Open-edi Business Frameworks for Service Modeling
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: CEUR Workshop Proceedings. - : CEUR. ; , s. 106-119
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Contemporary business collaborations foster enterprises to make their offerings available to partners and consumers as e-services. In this setting, high-level enterprise models, such as business models, provide an economically aware perspective for elicitation of business services, and thereby, e-services. Recently, REA and Open-edi business frameworks have been jointly considered to provide the Open-edi Business Transaction Ontology (OeBTO) for exploring concepts, relationships and actors involved in business collaborations. In this study, we use these frameworks and supporting architectures to propose a service-centric business model. From a model-based development perspective, the model that we propose is intended to be transformed to a system-centric service model, and further to Web service specifications and coordinations. The purpose of this study is primarily aimed toward an explorative and business-founded identification of services. An example from the insurance business sector is used to argument the way we ground and apply our proposed method.

  • The Informed Gaze : On the Implications of ICT-Based Surveillance
  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Information and communication technologies are not value-neutral. I examine two domains, public health surveillance and sustainability, in five papers covering: (i) the design and development of a software package for computer-assisted outbreak detection; (ii) a workflow for using simulation models to provide policy advice and a list of challenges for its practice; (iii) an analysis of design documents from three smart home projects presenting intersecting visions of sustainability; (iv) an analysis of EU-financed projects dealing with sustainability and ICT; (v) an analysis of the consequences of design choices when creating surveillance technologies. My contributions include three empirical studies of surveillance discourses where I identify the forms of action that are privileged and the values that are embedded into them. In these discourses, the presence of ICT entails increased surveillance, privileging technological expertise, and prioritising centralised forms of knowledge.

  • Techno-socio-economic analysis report
  • 2011
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The main purpose of this report is to explore the socio-techno-economic key factors and activities of relevance for the development of a sustainable testbed federation in Europe. In this process there is a need of incorporating a business model framework for enabling decision making in value creation and value capturing. This study shows that the federation has great opportunities to reach a broad market via the key partners networks. In this federation a span of testbeds are involved which provides a large knowledge and resource base. By being involved in the federation, partners and customers get access to a great variety of technical competences as well as testing resources for remote tests. Through the use of the resources offered in the federation, customers can build their own virtual testbed which makes it easier and cheaper for them to perform tests before their technology enters the market.

  • An interactive video website as a mode of communication in a participatory process
  • 2014
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Globalization and technology advancements require a participative workforce in order for contemporary organizations to be competitive (Argenti 2006, Kuhn 2008, Stohl 2005, Stohl and Cheney 2001, Westenholz 2006). Scholars and practice alike acknowledge that participation processes require enhanced communication between organizational members (Stohl and Cheney 2001). In this paper, we explore the use of an interactive video website to encourage organizational member participation. This study emanates from the contentions that organizing occurs in conversation and that organization emerges in communication (Taylor 1999, Weick 1979). The work is informed by the communicative constitution of organization (CCO) approach and we apply mixed methods. The results disclose little communication or co-orientation and low overall member participation. Reasons for why the initiative did not meet expectations are discussed.
