  • Mobile Assisted Language Learning : A Literature Review
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: mLearn 2012 - Mobile and Contextual Learning. - Helsinki. ; , s. 9-16
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Mobile assisted language learning (MALL) is a subarea of the growing field of mobile learning (mLearning) research which increasingly attracts the attention of scholars. This study provides a systematic review of MALL research within the specific area of second language acquisition during the period 2007 - 2012 in terms of research approaches, methods, theories and models, as well as results in the form of linguistic knowledge and skills. The findings show that studies of mobile technology use in different aspects of language learning support the hypothesis that mobile technology can enhance learners’ second language acquisition. However, most of the reviewed studies are experimental and small-scale, conducted within a short period of time. There is also a lack of cumulative research; most theories and concepts are used only in one or a few papers. This raises the issue of the reliability of findings over time, changing technologies, and in terms of scalability. In terms of gained linguistic knowledge and skills, attention is primarily on learners’ vocabulary acquisition, listening and speaking skills and language acquisition in more general terms.

  • Mobile Video Literacy : Negotiating the Use of a New Visual Technology
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Personal and Ubiquitous Computing. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1617-4909 .- 1617-4917. ; 18:3, s. 737-752
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this article, we examine the practice of learning to produce video using a new visual technology. Drawing upon a design intervention at a science centre, where a group of teenagers tried a new prototype technology for live mobile video editing, we show how the participants struggle with both the content and the form of producing videos, i.e. what to display and how to do it in a comprehensible manner. We investigate the ways in which video literacy practices are negotiated as ongoing accomplishments, and explore the communicative and material resources relied upon by participants as they create videos. Our results show that the technology is instrumental in this achievement and that as participants begin to master the prototype, they start to focus more on the narrative aspects of communicating the storyline of a science centre exhibit. The participants are explicitly concerned with such issues as how to create a comprehensible storyline for an assumed audience, what camera angles to use, how to cut and other aspects of the production of a video. We consider these observed activities to be candidate steps in an emerging mobile video literacy trajectory that involves developing a capacity to document and argue by means of this specific medium.

  • Ubiquitous Computing in Education : A SWOT Analysis by Students and Teachers
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: QScience Proceedings. - : Hamad bin Khalifa University Press.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Learning from anywhere anytime is a contemporary phenomenon in the field of education that is thought to be flexible, time and cost saving. The phenomenon is evident in the way computer technology mediates knowledge processes among learners. Computer technology is however, in some instances, faulted. There are studies that highlight drawbacks of computer technology use in learning. In this study we aimed at conducting a SWOT analysis on ubiquitous computing and computer-mediated social interaction and their affect on education. Students and teachers were interviewed on the mentioned concepts using focus group interviews. Our contribution in this study is, identifying what teachers and students perceive to be the strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of ubiquitous computing and computer-mediated social interaction in education. We also relate the findings with literature and present a common understanding on the SWOT of these concepts. Results show positive perceptions. Respondents revealed that ubiquitous computing and computer-mediated social interaction are important in their education due to advantages such as flexibility, efficiency in terms of cost and time, ability to acquire computer skills. Nevertheless disadvantages where also mentioned for example health effects, privacy and security issues, noise in the learning environment, to mention but a few. This paper gives suggestions on how to overcome threats mentioned.

  • Project outcome classification with imprecise criteria information
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Applied Decision Sciences. - 1755-8085 .- 1755-8077. ; 6:4, s. 372-387
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A case in which managers have to make project outcome classification decisions with uncertainty in independently related criteria values is considered in this paper. A multi-criteria decision model is developed in this paper by selecting methods which delved into data analysis to help managers make informed classification decisions. Uncertainty in the criteria values is resolved using linear programming which enables managers to know the profit outcome of their projects for efficient resource allocation. The classification scheme from the linear programming process is used as predefined classification inputs for use in the Utilities Additives Discriminants(UTADIS) method, which further produces a classification model. The analysis presented a no misclassification error in the predefined classifications from the linear programming and the classifications in the UTADIS method, thus further boosting the confidence managers can entrust in the resulting classification model.

  • Cross-cultural analysis of users’ attitudes toward the use of mobile devices in second and foreign language learning in higher education : A case from China and Sweden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Computers and education. - : Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd. - 0360-1315 .- 1873-782X. ; 69, s. 169-180
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study examined the current state of students’ attitudes toward mobile technology use in and for second and foreign language learning in higher education. Moreover, the study investigated if age, gender or cultural factors affect these attitudes. A total of 345 students from two in many aspects different countries, China (Yunnan University) and Sweden (Dalarna University) participated in this study. To access learners’ perceptions toward mobile technology use, we employed Kearney’s pedagogical framework to mobile learning from a socio-cultural perspective (Kearney, Schuck, Burden, & Aubusson, 2012). Hofstede’s cultural dimensions were used to approach students’ cultural views, as these dimensions represent some values – aspects of culture – that may affect attitudes toward technology and learning individually as well as in combination. The findings show the respondents’ attitudes toward mobile learning are very positive with individualization being most positive (83%) followed by collaboration (74%), and authenticity (73%). The statistical analysis indicates that Hofstede’s factors cannot explain the differences in mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) attitudes in the chosen sample. Among the personal factors, gender is identified to be a predictor to explain the differences in students’ attitudes toward MALL. This study shows that technology itself seems to be the most important culture-shaping factor, more important than culture inherited from the physical environment, and more important than age.

  • Systematising the Field of Mobile Assisted Language Learning
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Mobile and Blended Learning. - IGI Global : IGI Global. - 1941-8647 .- 1941-8655. ; 5:4, s. 72-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    •  This study provides a systematic review of mobile assisted language (MALL) research within the specifc area of second language acquisition (SLA) during the period of 2005-2012 in terms of research approaches, theories and methods, technology, and the linguistic knowledge and skills' results. The fndings show a shift from the prevailing SMS-based language learning in 2005-2008 towards the use of more advanced multimedia and intelligent learning systems in the last years. Many highly cited studies focus on design of mobile language learning systems and experimental evaluation of their effectiveness. Studies often draw on mature pedagogic models and methods. However, descriptive and small-scale experimental studies dominate. In terms of theoretical approaches and frameworks, there is a lack of specifc reference to mobile learning conceptual and theoretical models, which makes it diffcult to distinguish any specifc mobile learning theories from other learning theories. Research has so far paid most attention to learners' vocabulary acquisition.

  • Computerized identification of motor complications in Parkinson's disease
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Movement Disorders Supplement. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0885-3185. ; , s. S187-S188
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Objective: To investigate whether spirography-based objective measures of motor dysfunctions are able to discriminate between Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients with different motor states (Off and Dyskinesia) and healthy elderly (HE) subjects. Background: Sixty-five advanced PD patients and 10 HE subjects performed repeated assessments of spirography, using a touch screen telemetry device. On each test occasion, they were asked to trace a pre-drawn Archimedes spiral using dominant hand and repeating the test three times. The clinical assessment was only performed in the patient group by animating the three spirals in a web interface, allowing a clinician (DN) to observe accelerations and spa-tial changes during the drawing process. A scale ranging from 0 (normal) to 4 (extremely severe) was used for the assessment of kinematic properties of speed, irregularity and hesitation. Finally, the momentary motor state of the patient was marked using two classes: - 1 (Off) and 1 (Dyskinesia). The HE samples were assigned a 0 (On) class and used in subsequent analysis. Methods: After time series analysis, 13 quantitative measures were calculated for representing the severity of symptoms in each individual kinematic property. Principal Component Analysis was then used to reduce their dimensions by retaining the first 4 principal components (PC). To investigate differences in mean PC scores across the three classes a one-way ANOVA test followed by Tukey multiple comparisons was used. An ordinal logistic regression model, using 10-fold cross-validation, was used to map the 4 PC to the corresponding motor state classes. Results: The agreements between computer and clinician ratings were very good with a weighted area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) coefficient of 0.91 (Table 1). The mean PC scores were different across the three classes, only at different levels (Fig 1). The Spearman’s rank correlations between the first two PC and visually assessed kinematic properties were: speed (PC1, 0.34; PC2, 0.83), irregularity (PC1, 0.17; PC2, 0.17) and hesitation (PC1, 0.27; PC2, 0.77).Conclusions: These findings suggest that spirography-based objective measures are valid measures of spatial- and time-dependent deficits in PD. The differences among the three classes imply that these measures can be used to assess changes in the motor states in response to therapeutic interventions.

  • Visualization of spirography-based objective measures in Parkinson's disease
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Movement Disorders Supplement. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0885-3185. ; , s. S187-S189
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Objective: To investigate whether advanced visualizations of spirography-based objective measures are useful in differentiating motor complications among Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients. Background: Sixty-five patients diagnosed with advanced PD have utilized a telemetry test battery, implemented on a touch screen handheld computer, in a telemedicine setting. On each test occasion, they were asked to perform repeated and time-stamped assessments of spiral drawing performance by tracing a pre-drawn Archimedes spiral. The test battery was also used by 10 healthy elderly (HE) subjects. Methods: A web-based framework was developed to visualize the performance during spirography of both patients and HE subjects to a clinician (DN). The performance was depicted by animating the spiral drawings (Fig 1). In addition, the framework displayed two time series views for representing drawing speed (blue line) and displacement from the ideal trajectory (orange line). The views are coordinated and linked i.e. user interactions in one of the views will be reflected in other views. For instance, when the user points in one of the pixels in spiral view, the circle size of the underlying pixel increases and a vertical line appears in the time series views to depict the corresponding position. Fig 1 shows single randomly selected spirals per each subject group: A) a PD patient in Dyskinesia state, B) a HE subject, and C) a PD patient in Off state. Results: The clinician recognized Dyskinesia symptoms as movements made with high speed, smooth/gradual spatial displacements, and a small amount of hesitation (Fig 1A). Similarly, Off symptoms were associated with low speed, sharp/abrupt spatial displacements, and a large amount of hesitation (Fig 1C). In contrast, the spiral drawn by a HE subject (Fig 1B) was associated with unchanging levels of kinematic features i.e. drawing speed, spatial displacements and hesitation over time. Conclusions: Visualizing spirography-based objective measures enables identification of trends and patterns of motor dysfunctions at the patient’s individual level. Dynamic access of visualized motor tests may be useful during the evaluation of therapy-related complications such as under- and over-medications. This will assist during individualized optimization of therapies, enabling patients to spend more time in the On state with a minimum of Off and dyskinetic states.

  • Usability of government websites in Uganda
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Electronic Journal of e-Government. - 1479-439X. ; 8:1, s. 1-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Government websites offer great benefits to citizens and governments. Such benefits, however, cannot be realized if websites are unusable. This study investigates usability of government websites in Uganda.Using the feature investigation method, the study evaluated four Ugandan government websites according tothree perspectives. Results show that websites are partially usable in the design layout and navigationperspectives but are rather weak in stating legal policies. Evaluation results provide the Ugandan governmentwith a clear picture of what needs to be improved according to international website design standards. Moreover, the parsimonious evaluation framework proposed in the research is useful for any country that wants to do aquick and easy evaluation of their government websites.
