  • Understanding "successful aging" : Cultural and migratory perspectives
  • 2001
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation aims to contribute to the rectification of the atheoretization that characterizes the study of aging and diversity through the formulation and preliminary empirical testing of a culturally-relevant theoretical framework for the study of successful aging. Inspired by the Kluckhohnian approach to the study of cultural variation, the framework hereby proposed posits that there is congruence between the understandings of successful aging that people uphold and the value orientations that they prefer in regards to four topics: man-nature, time, activity and relational. Moreover, through the transcultural approach employed (i.e. through the focus on immigrants' understandings as opposed to natives'), this dissertation aims to shed light on how socio-cultural contexts shape the understandings in question and how the process of migration to a culture that significantly differs from one's culture of origin can challenge the manner in which successful aging is understood. Methodologically speaking, this study departs from the adaptation and further development of the vignette-based instrument that Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck designed for the testing of the theory of cultural variation. Qualitative interviews with 30 Iranian immigrants to Sweden (16 men and 14 women between the ages of 35 and 59 who migrated from Iran to Sweden between the ages of 25 and 48) were conducted using vignettes that tap into both, value orientations and understandings of successful aging. The results suggest that congruence exists between value orientations and understandings of successful aging. In addition, other notions were brought to light besides the master- nature; future, doing and individual oriented ones that are often associated with the construct in question. The process of migration was also found to challenge those understandings of successful aging that were believed to be inappropriate for the socio-cultural context in which the respondents now live. Thus, not only are understandings of successful aging contextually determined, they are also much more processual than gerontologists seem to have originally assumed. It is therefore suggested that the culturally-relevant theoretical framework hereby proposed allows for deeper insight into individual, generational as well as cultural understandings of successful aging.

  • Identity, Old(er) Age and Migrancy : A Social Constructionist Lens
  • 2017
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • ldentity research in relation to ethnicity and migration has tended to focus an younger people whilst identity research in relation to ageing and old(er) age has not focused an migrants. This inadvertent mutual neglect has led to a lack of identity research that examines the identity categories of old(er) age and migrancy together, a lacuna that this dissertation aims to redress. This dissertation departs from a social constructionist understanding of identity as situationally accomplished in the interplay between how one defines oneself (internally) and how others define one (externally). The questions raised by this perspective and addressed in this dissertation are: When (in what situations) and in relation to whom do old(er) age and migrancy (respectively) seem to become meaningful for identification? How do the identity categories of old(er) age and migrancy seem to be negotiated? The empirical material consists of in-depth interviews with 24 older migrants (13 men, 11 women) aged between 55 and 79 who have been living in Sweden for 18 to 61 years. Interviewees come from 12 different countries that vary in perceived cultural distance from Sweden. The findings suggest that identifications with old(er) age and migrancy seem to be dynamic and flexible rather than necessarily permanently meaningful, thus gaining meaning in specific situations and in relation to particular Others. External definitions furthermore do not always seem to match with internal ones. Regardless of how old(er) age and migrancy are constructed, they seem to be negotiable. This dissertation thus contributes to identity research by studying old(er) age and migrancy together and furthermore sheds light onto how the social constructionist lens allows us to see variability where stability otherwise would be presumed.

  • Civic engagement among foreign-born and native-born older adults living in Europe : a SHARE-based analysis
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Ageing. - : SPRINGER. - 1613-9372 .- 1613-9380. ; 20:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Civic engagement is one of the cornerstones of participatory democracy and fundamental to preventing old-age social exclusion. Even though civic engagement late-in-life has received considerable attention, there is a lacuna of research on older migrants' civic engagement. This study aims therefore to examine potential predictors of civic engagement in terms of formal volunteering and participation in political organisations among foreign-born and native-born older adults in Europe. Attention is hereby given to how socio-structural resources and social capital are associated with civic engagement, and whether these associations differ between foreign-born and native-born. Data from wave 7 of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe [n = 74,150; 5710 of them are foreign-born] were used in multivariable logistic regression analyses. Results show that socio-structural and social capital variables are positively associated with volunteering and participation in political organisations, both in native-born and foreign-born older adults. The study also suggests that place of birth (in Europe vs. outside Europe) and age-upon-migration play a role in predicting civic engagement among foreign-born older adults, and are therefore features worth considering when studying older migrants' civic engagement.

  • Making sense of illness : late in life migration as point of departure for elderly Iranian immigrants´explanatory models of illness
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Journal of Immigrant Health. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1096-4045 .- 1573-3629. ; 7:3, s. 153-164
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article is based on data gathered through 60 qualitative interviews conducted within the realm of three research projects that have used "culture-appropriate lenses" to study the postmigration situation of late-in-life Iranian immigrants to Sweden. The findings gathered through these studies were interpreted against the backdrop that culturally appropriate nursing theories provide. This meant that it was, at times, these elders' backgrounds as cultural "others" that were implicitly used to make sense of the various issues that were brought to the fore by these studies. The particular issue with which this article is concerned is the "unusualness" of these elders' explanatory models of illness. Inspired by the concept definition of situation in the symbolic interactionist perspective and by the feeling that this perspective might bring about a different interpretation of the original findings regarding their understandings of illness and disease, we set out to conduct a secondary analysis of these elders explanatory models of illness. The findings presented in this article will show how the elderly Iranian immigrants interviewed in these three studies utilize the process of "late in life migration" as a point of reference for their understandings of what has caused the illnesses from which they suffered. Hereby we will suggest that the "unusualness" of their explanatory models of illness might be best understood if we focus on what they shared as immigrants (i.e., the fact that the process of late-in-life migration has made their culture obsolete) as opposed to what they shared as Iranians (i.e., their culture of origin).

  • Being, feeling and acting : A qualitative study of Swedish home-help care recipients' understandings of dependence and independence
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Journal of Aging Studies. - : Elsevier BV. - 0890-4065 .- 1879-193X. ; 24:2, s. 75-87
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article contributes to the debate on dependence and independence through a study of how a group of 29 cognitively healthy Swedish home-help care recipients between the ages of 77 and 93 perceive their situation. Two overall themes with regards to how the constructs of dependence and independence are understood were found. One of them concerns how being in need of help can be justified (i.e. the why of receiving help) and the other how the very situation of being in need of help and care can be regarded (i.e. the how of receiving help). The study reveals a clear distinction between receiving help and care and feeling dependent, as well as between receiving help and care and being able to remain an active agent. On the basis of these findings we argue for the fruitfulness of distinguishing between ‘being’, ‘feeling’ and ‘acting’ as aspects of dependence and independence.
