  • Advancing Intervention Science Through Effectiveness Research : A Global Perspective
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Child and Youth Care Forum. - : Springer Science+Business Media B.V.. - 1053-1890 .- 1573-3319. ; 41:2, s. 109-117
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Effectiveness research is maturing as a field within intervention and prevention science. Effectiveness research involves the implementation and evaluation of the effectiveness of the dissemination of evidence-based interventions in everyday circumstances (i.e., type 2 translational research). Effectiveness research is characterized by diverse types of research studies. Progress in this field has the potential to inform several debates within intervention science [e.g., fidelity versus local and cultural adaptation; identification of core components, effective dissemination systems). Objective: To provide illustrations from different countries (Ireland, Italy, South Africa, Sweden, New Zealand, and the United States) of how intervention science might raise the value of future effectiveness or type 2 translational research. Methods: Themes raised by individual articles and across articles are summarized and expanded on in this commentary. Results: Themes consist of raising awareness about the importance of effectiveness research on the cultural adaptation of evidence-based interventions and intervention support structures, as well as further development of strategies to bridge the gap between research and practice. Conclusions: Effectiveness research has an important role to play in affecting systemic change on a population level and allowing us to gain a realistic global understanding of the phenomena we hope to change through interventions. Articles in this special issue provide reports from social scientists and practitioners located in various parts of the world and offer a rich, diverse portrait of effectiveness research and theory development. The totality of the work contained in this special issue anticipates many of the changes that intervention and prevention science will undergo as we progress and develop effective dissemination strategies for evidence-based interventions that promote positive youth development and prevent youth and family problems on a global scale.

  • 'A one way ticket to the city, please!'€™ on young women leaving the Swedish peripheral region Västernorrland
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Rural Studies. - : Elsevier BV. - 0743-0167 .- 1873-1392. ; 43, s. 301-310
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most rural and peripheral regions in Sweden suffer from an outmigration of young adults and particularly young women are over-represented in this outmigration. The outmigration of young adults in general and young women in particular is headed for the major towns in southern Sweden and the capital city Stockholm. This sex-biased out-migration has been on-going for more than 40 years for some rural regions in Sweden. This paper aims at explaining the outmigration and return migration of women 18-34 to and from the peripheral region Västernorrland in Northern Sweden. A qualitative method will be used in the analysis in this study. The empirical material consists of expert interviews and interviews with young women leaving Västernorrland, returning to Västernorrland or moving in without any prior connection to the region. The conventional driving forces for out-migration of young women are connected to studies and moving to more female-friendly labour markets. The findings in this study suggest that bad infrastructure and general service are factors causing out-migration and repel women to return. Furthermore, young women with weak social networks in the region appear more willing to leave and the '€˜macho culture€™' in the region appears a push-factor.

  • Family Caregivers of Cancer Patients : Perceived Burden and Symptoms During the Early Phases of Cancer Treatment
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Social work in health care. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0098-1389 .- 1541-034X. ; 53:3, s. 289-309
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study investigated levels of symptoms, caregiver burden, and changes over time in 278 family caregivers (FC) of cancer patients. FCs experienced high levels of depressive symptoms and sleep disturbance, low levels of fatigue, and low to moderate levels of caregiver burden, yet these symptoms remained relatively stable over time. Being female and not being employed were factors associated with an increased risk of symptoms and caregiver burden. The understanding evolving from this study can enhance social- and health care professionals' awareness of FCs' challenging situation and the potential impact this has on the FCs' ability to provide care to the patient.

  • Living Close to a Person With Cancer : A Review of the International Literature and Implications for Social Work Practice
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of gerontological social work. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0163-4372 .- 1540-4048. ; 57:6-7, s. 531-555
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To help family caregivers (FCs), social workers need to understand the complexity of FC's experiences and challenges. For this systematic review, several relevant, multidisciplinary electronic databases were searched. Of 1,643 titles identified, 108 articles met the inclusion criteria and are included in this review. Various experiences, symptoms, and burden related to caregiving responsibilities are described and discussed. The understanding evolving from this study about the FC's own health risk, caregiver burden, and experiences over time can enhance a social worker's awareness of an FC's challenging situation and the potential impact this has on the FC's ability to provide care to the patient.

  • Homicide in Estonia
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Handbook of European Homicide Research. - New York : Springer. - 9781461404651 ; , s. 421-437
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Homicide is a topic of particular interest in Estonia since level of violent deaths is well above the European average. In 2006-2008 the average rate per 100000 population in Estonia was 6.6, in the EU it was second highest rate after Lithuania in these years. At the same time Estonia has experienced a rapid decrease in homicide during last 15 years – the rate of homicide used to be more than four times higher in the middle of 1990s.High rate of violent death is not something that has evolved during last decades, it has been a problem through very different state orders and social conditions, including Soviet era from 1940ies to 1980ies. In broadest sense lethal violence in Estonia should be analyzed in relation to alcohol consumption behavior and cultural traditions. Estonia shares drinking patterns with its neighbors Finland and Russia, it also has a remarkable immigrant population whose rates of homicide and violence in general have been and are still higher in comparison to Estonians. The problems that arise from heavy drinking are also visible in other areas where unnatural deaths occur: Estonia has lead EU rankings of fire deaths and deaths caused by drowning and traffic accidents.Despite high rates of homicide, it has not become a topic of special interest for public in Estonia. Although each week a person or two are being killed on average in recent years, media covers only a few exceptional cases during the year. This has probably contributed to rational criminal policy but has not drawn enough attention to social and economic policy areas such as alcohol policy.
