  • Lärosätenas organisering av samverkan och modeller för resursfördelning

    • Projektet har syftat till att kartlägga modeller för hur lärosäten premierar strategisk samverkan i sin interna resursfördelning mellan lärosätesledningen och fakulteter/verksamhetsområden och i nästa led till institutioner eller andra aktiviteter. Som bakgrund till våra analyser har vi kartlagt hur lärosätena organiserar sitt arbete med extern samverkan såväl ledningsmässigt, akademiskt som administrativt. I projektet har även analyserats principer för resursfördelning och metoder för att samla in nödvändig information. En central frågeställning har varit i vad mån förutsättningar inom olika discipliner och utbildningsinriktningar kan jämföras. Ett av resultaten visar att lärosätenas modeller för resursfördelning samtidigt är både jämförbara och unika. Det förekommer sällan tydligt riktade satsningar på samverkan. Genomgången visar samtidigt att aktörer på olika nivåer inom universiteten visar stor skicklighet och uppfinnings ‐ rikedom när det gäller att indirekt påverka den interna fördelningen av fakultetsmedel för såväl utbildning som forskning och forskarutbildning. Ett betydande gemensamt lärande kan åstadkommas genom fortsatt samarbete mellan universitetsledningar och förvaltningar men även mellan fakulteter och institutioner vid respektive lärosäte.

    • Context  Phenomenography is a qualitative approach to research which has revolutionised the way that researchers and teachers think about the processes and outcomes of learning in higher education. Phenomenography has also been used successfully in medical and health care research for the last 20 years. Phenomenography provides a lens through which to view certain types of research question. It also provides direction for how to empirically carry out the research.Methods  This paper introduces phenomenography as a viable qualitative approach for use in medical education research.Results  A phenomenographic study maps the qualitatively different ways in which people experience a phenomenon. This type of study can have an important impact on, for example, patient communication, clinical practice and health care education.Conclusion  We suggest that a phenomenographic approach can be used to explore many medical education research issues, and can facilitate more solid links between research and educational development and change.

  • Production and Products of Preschool Documentation : Entanglements of children, things, and templates

    • The objective of the present study is to produce knowledge about how children, things, documents, computers, teachers, templates and other entities take part in and produce documentation in preschool systematic quality development work. The thesis asks questions about how and what is produced as quality in preschool documentation. Through a posthumanist agential realist approach, the study engages empirically in video recordings of preschool documentation practices from one Swedish preschool, and in documentation from four other Swedish preschools.The results, presented in four articles, show that documentation practice is complex and entangled with a variety of entities, human and non-human, and spaces and time. The study shows how children’s participation in production of documentation does not depend on which documentation method is used. In the study, objects such as computers, images and coloured labels, together with teachers’ attitudes and agendas, have an impact on the way that children are involved in producing documentation. The results also show that the products of documentation, intra-acting with a local template, with past and present preschool traditions and policies, produce rather than represent certain elements of quality such as teachers’ actions, children’s interests and thematic work. The thesis produces knowledge about how the focus of preschool documentation shifts away from individual children and towards teachers’ activities, and creates possibilities for what preschool practices and quality may become.

  • Exploring the resource logic of student entrepreneurs

    • This study responds to the call in recent research for comparative studies examining whether student entrepreneurs are different to other kinds of entrepreneurs. Based on institutional theory, the specific question we ask in this study is whether student entrepreneurs who start up their firms in close relation to the university have a different resource logic compared to entrepreneurs who start their firms outside the university context. We define resource logic as the individual's set of ideas for how to secure and use resources, and we link this concept to theories of effectual reasoning and bootstrapping to develop our argument. Moreover, we identify two different viewpoints about the effects of the university milieu on the resource logic of student entrepreneurs and we develop hypotheses to test the different viewpoints. The findings give overall support for the view that student entrepreneurs have developed a resource logic that favours both effectual reasoning and the use of bootstrapping methods.

  • Shaping the female student : an analysis of Swedish beauty school recruitment texts

    • This study focuses on the recruitment of adults to the beauty industry in Sweden. It is concerned with a move in (beauty) education away from state and towards private provision in a wider context where education is becoming more heavily marketised. Drawing on a poststructural approach inspired by the work of Foucault and feminist theory, the shaping of student subjectivity in recruitment material for private beauty schools is analysed. A poststructural approach provides analytical tools that make visible the process of how power shapes subjectivities, and the use of feminist theory gives special focus to the gendered aspects of this process. The study includes a textual analysis of website homepages of beauty schools, beauty schools’ Facebook pages and web pages that provide compiled information on educational programs and courses connected to the beauty industry. The analysis shows how consumption is constituted and feminised through specific marketing strategies and thereby becomes both a starting point and a resource for the shaping of student subjectivity. Thus, a particular form of gendered entrepreneurial self is shaped in this femininised educational context, and this study therefore highlights the importance of vocational research that takes into account the shaping of student subjectivity.

    • In many countries, current research policy is dominated bymanagerialism and excellence, manifesting the aim of makinguniversities into national strategic assets in the globally competitiveknowledge economy. This article discusses these policy trends and theirmirror in recent developments in public funding for academic research,with special attention to Sweden. A review of the language in three con-secutive Swedish governmental research bills from the past 10 yearsshows a clear policy shift towards the promotion of excellence and stra-tegic priority on the level of higher education institutions. Reforms tothe funding system, especially the launch of specific strategic excellencefunding programmes, are introduced to put the policy in practice. Whilethe policy shift itself might be discursive, the changes to the fundingsystem clearly show a determination on behalf of the Swedish govern-ment to increase strategic profiling and the pursuit of excellence inresearch on behalf of universities.
