  • Mathematical reasoning and beliefs in non-routine task solving
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Current State of Research on Mathematical Beliefs XX. - Falun : Högskolan Dalarna. - 9789185941933
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper explores low performing upper secondary school students’ mathematical reasoning when solving non-routine tasks in pairs. Their solutions were analysed using a theoretical framework about mathematical reasoning and a model to study beliefs as arguments for choices. The results confirm previous research and three themes of beliefs are used by the student. These themes are safety, expectations, and motivation. The results also show a connection between beliefs and imitative reasoning as a way to solve non-routine tasks.

  • Globalization and classroom practice : insights on learning about the world in Swedish and Australian schools
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nordidactica. - Karlstad : CSD Karlstad. - 2000-9879. ; :1, s. 104-130
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Globalization and global education implies changes to practices at the classroom level to adapt to new imperatives associated with technology use and awareness, and environmental sustainability. It also implies much more. It implies that teachers apply their classroom pedagogy to take account of students’ new found global understandings of which they, and the school community, is largely unaware. This article addresses and discuses three key consequences of globalization for classrooms worldwide; an increased diversity of experience of the students within the classroom, an increased competitiveness of educational outcomes between national states and subsequently some standardisation of curriculum across nations to enable this, and an increased emphasis on teaching skills and values associated with intercultural understanding. Young children’s map knowledge and their resultant, and associated, interpretations of the world from a comparative study a from Swedish and Australian primary classrooms is used as examples of some of these implications of the impact of ‘global culture’ and ‘global issues’ on current and future classroom practice.

  • "Vi kan skriva förargument och sedan motargument" : Om deliberativa samtal i undervisning i svenska som andraspråk på högskolenivå
  • 2014
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In the light of the twofold mission of Swedish schools, that is to say enabling pupils to develop both subject knowledge and a democratic attitude, the purpose of this thesis is to investigate to what extent adult higher education students from different language and social backgrounds, studying Swedish as a second language, are able to carry out joint writing assignments with the aid of deliberative discourse, and to what extent they thereby also develop a deliberative attitude. The twofold mission of education applies to them too. While there already exists a certain amount of research into deliberative discourse relating to education in schools, the perspective of higher education didactics in this research is still lacking. The present study is to be viewed as a first contribution to this research. The theoretical starting point of this study includes previous research into deliberative discourse by further developing an existing model regarding criteria for deliberative discourse, for example that there is a striving towards agreement, although the consensus may be temporary, that diverging opinions can be set against each other, that tolerance and respect for views other than one’s own are shown, and that traditional outlooks can be questioned. This model is supplemented by designations for a number of disruptive behaviours, such as ridiculing, ignoring, interrupting people and engaging in private conversations. The thus further developed model will thereafter act as a lens in the analysis of students’ discussions when writing joint texts. Another theoretical starting point is the view of education as communication, and of the possibility of communication creating a third place, thereby developing democracy in the here and now-situation.For this study, comprising 18 hours of observation of nine students, that is to say the discussions of three groups in connection with writing texts on different occasions, various ethnographic data collection methods have been employed, for example video recordings, participant observations, field notes and interviews in conjunction with the discussions. The analysis clarifies that the three groups developed their deliberation as the discussions about the joint assignment proceeded, and that most of the nine students furthermore expressed at least an openness towards a deliberative attitude for further discussions in the future. The disruptive behaviours mentioned in connection with the analytical model that could be identified in the discussions, for example interruptions and private conversations, proved not to constitute real disturbances; on the contrary they actually contributed towards the discussions developing, enabling them to continue. On the other hand, other and not previously identified disturbances occurred, for example a focus on grades, the lack of time and lacking language ability, which all in different ways affected the students’ attitudes towards their work. For any future didactical work on deliberative discourse in Swedish as a second language within higher education, these disturbances would need to be highlighted and made aware of for both teachers and students. Keywords: higher education didactics, communication, deliberative discourse, deliberative attitude, John Dewey, Tomas Englund, heterogeneity, ethnographic data collection methods.

  • Voices of special educators in Sweden : a total-population study
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Educational research (Windsor. Print). - London : Routledge. - 0013-1881 .- 1469-5847. ; 57:3, s. 287-304
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: There are two occupational groups in Sweden that are expected to have significant impact on educational work related to children in need of special support. These two groups are special educational needs coordinators (SENCOs) and special education teachers. In this paper, we use the collective name special educators' to refer to both groups. Special educators are expected to have specific knowledge regarding the identification of, and work with, school difficulties. However, there is noticeably little research concerning these occupational groups. This study was undertaken in order to further our knowledge about special educators' work.Purpose: The overall purpose of the present paper is to provide a first overview of special educators' work. The paper investigates these special educators' perceptions of their occupational role, of their preparedness for the role and of how their role is practised. The paper also illuminates questions about SENCOs' and special education teachers' knowledge and values as well as the grounds for the occupational groups to claim special expertise related to the identification of, and work with, school difficulties.Design and method: A questionnaire was sent out in 2012 to all SENCOs and special education teachers in Sweden who received their degree from 2001 onwards and in accordance with the Swedish examination acts of 2001, 2007 and 2008 (N=4252, 75% response rate). Results: According to the results, special educators state that they are well prepared to work with some tasks, such as counselling, leading development work and teaching children/pupils individually or in groups. Concurrently, there are tasks that the groups are educated for (e.g. school-development work), which they seldom practise in their daily work. Conclusions: Primarily using reasoning concerning jurisdictional control, we discuss SENCOs' and special education teachers' authority to claim special expertise in relation to certain kinds of work, clients and knowledge and thus, their chances of gaining full jurisdictional control in the field of special education.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Participation as a pedagogy and democratic value turns out to be a critical element in students’ completion of school. Completed education is a regional development project in which a survey has been conducted in order to identify successful strategies to promote completed education in school. In an analysis, in the context of the survey, with an emphasis on school and participation as a pedagogy and democratic value, several findings are shown. It turns out that the importance of participation manifests itself through an emphasis on the societal and democratic mission of school; school ethos; the value praxis of school; pedagogical approach; and viewing the pupil as capable. It is, in more detail, shown that it is particularly crucial to understand the completion of school as a pedagogical problem; create sustainable institutional structures not bound to one person; and to make sure that students are participants in their own studies.

  • Introduction: Teaching through Stories: The Storyline Approach in Teacher Education
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Teaching through Stories. Renewing the Scottish Storyline Approach in Teacher Education. - Berlin : Waxman. - 9783830939863 ; , s. 11-30
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Globally, crucial efforts are being made to develop, change and transform education to meet the demands of the internationalised cultures and policies of the twenty-first century. As educators prepare their school children to respond to the challenges and possibilities of globalisation, mobility, environmental and social issues, and an insecure future, they also have to simultaneously interact with these entangled processes themselves. Educational policies and structures are influenced by globalised values, principles and ideals and have led to changed curricula in many countries. New curricula require new pedagogy which in turn creates new demands on teachers and learners. Educational systems, teachers and learners, need to be accustomed to the key concept of life-long learning. New skills have been for quite a while – and still are – required for new ways of managing pupils, teaching and learning situations, material and resources and school systems. Teacher education plays an essential role in transforming pedagogical approaches and methods and equipping prospective teachers with 21st century skills, but have been criticised for a lack of connection between theory and practice, evident in different parts of the world (Hennissen, Beckers, & Moerkerke, 2017; Marcondes, Leite, & Ramos, 2017; Peercy & Troyan, 2017), including the countries in Scandinavia (Hennissen et al., 2017; Häggström & Udén, 2018; Korthagen, 2010; Rönnerman & Salo, 2012). Through a theoretic discussion, this chapter aims to contribute comprehensive knowledge related to core aspects of TSA with teacher education as the context. TSA relies on the premise that stories support meaning-making processes, something that according to Mitchell and McNaughton (2016) “has been recognised by Storyline practitioners since the 1960s” (p. ix).

  • Learning About And Through Sustainability: Relational Pedagogy And Storyline As A Teaching Foundation
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Arts Humanities and Social Sciences Studies, ISSN: 2582-1601. - 2582-1601. ; 7:4, s. 45-58:4, s. 45-58
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • : This article studies how environmental sustainability is integrated in a Storyline, which include learning about and through sustainability, conducted in two primary school classes, Grade 2 (children’s age 8- 9) in Sweden. It examines the significant aspects of the Storyline approach in relation to democratic values and young pupils’ sense of agency. In addition, it examines how pupils comprehend the concept of sustainability, and the Storyline approach itself. The empirical material consists of classroom observation and individual semistructured interviews with 20 pupils and 2 teachers. Theories of relational pedagogy are used to analyze the material. The results show that Storyline work depends on a skilled, compassionate and caring teacher, who creates an open climate in the classroom. It is argued that both a pedagogical theoretical foundation, such as relational pedagogy, and a deliberate teaching and learning approach, such as Storyline, are crucial when implementing issues of sustainability in primary school education.
