    • Title: Where “the wild things” are: An author of children’s books on a visit to the suburbs Abstract:Few studies have been carried out on children’s literature from a post-colonial perspective. In this article, we look closer at four picture books recently published in Sweden with the purpose of giving children from urban areas patterns of identification. The aim of our study is to see how the ‘suburb’ is articulated as a multi-accented sign. Three themes are elaborated in our analysis, i.e. loneliness and alienation, drug abuse and misery as well as small business occurrence. We also discuss the consequences for children in early years of an encounter with a distorted or alienated view of suburban culture.

    • Uppdragsutbildning bedrivs vid många lärosäten som en lite undanskymd verksamhet vid sidan om grunduppdragen utbildning och forskning. Vid Högskolan för lärande och kommunikation, Jönköping University har uppdragsutbildning under många år fungerat som en sorts fönster ut mot de verksamheter vi utbildar våra studenter för. Lärarutbildare som håller i våra uppdragsutbildningar vittnar om möten med yrkesverksamma som stimulerar och leder till reflektioner som inte är möjliga med studenter som ännu saknar denna erfarenhet. Detta ger även en fördjupad förtrogenhet med det som våra studenter kommer möta efter sin utbildning hos oss. I den här boken delar kollegor vid högskolan med sig av de erfarenheter de fått i olika möten med yrkesverksamma. Detta är något vi tar med oss in i våra utbildningar och kan ses som en kunskapsproduktion i termer av högskolans beprövade erfarenhet och vetenskapliga grund.

  • Children’s rights and strategies for inclusion in the context of special needs education

    • “A policy of inclusion is generally understood around the world as part of a human rights agenda that demands access to, and equity in education” (Florian, 2008, p. 202). An understanding of discourses concerning inclusion in education contributes valuable information in the context of human rights and especially children’s rights in the welfare state. This paper is my contribution to discussions in circle 1 of the Nordic Summer University on “Human rights in the Nordic welfare states”. It shall also be developed into a theoretical background for my study on multi-professional cooperation in schools and the discussion of results from this study, which builds on focus groups interviews with teachers in Sweden, Germany and Japan, on which I reported early in this circle (Kreitz-Sandberg, 2010). Today’s presentation ignores both methodological questions of the empirical study, considerations on international comparisons and results from my focus group interviews. However, it takes a more extended view on possible theoretical frameworks for the study. We might consider if and in which form such a theoretical description could be part of the online anthology planned by circle 1.

    • The main aim of the study is to generate increased knowledge about young people’s leisure time sporting habits in a contextual perspective. The intention is to highlight the circumstances in which young people pursue and participate in different activities, with a particular focus on sport in terms of one’s own life circumstances. An essential point of departure of the study is regarding sport as an important pedagogic environment of norms and values.The perspective of the study is mainly cultural-sociological. In the analyses, Pierre Bourdieu’s key concepts habitus and capital have been used as research tools together with gender. The data on which the thesis is based is collected from young people from school year 9 living in four different milieus and comes from three different collections, conducted in 1996, 2002 and 2007. In each data collection about 1200-1500 pupils replied to a questionnaire.Sport occupies a central position in young people’s life on the recreational field. The results show that sport culture can best be understood in the local perspective. Young people’s sporting habit development can be said to be a result of a complex interplay between personal preferences, the home environment, local traditions, what is on offer, living conditions and the prevailing laws of gender and status.For the group of teenagers as a whole the proportion of members, as well as those who pursue personal sports, increases with higher educational capital and higher economic capital. When it comes to organised sport outside the sports club milieu no such connection can be determined.The thesis has shown that sport is not accessible for all and opportunities for participation are curtailed for large groups of young people in our society. This is especially true for sport organised in sport clubs, i.e. sport mainly supported by public funds.

    • Det finns didaktiska utmaningar och möjligheter relaterade till ett tvärdisciplinärtämnesområde som det miljövetenskapliga. En central fråga är hur miljövetenskapligutbildning kan utformas för att ge studenterna förutsättningaratt handskas med komplexa, idag möjligen okända, miljöfrågor i en kommandeyrkesverksamhet. I en svensk definition av didaktik är frågeorden Vad, Huroch Varför är centrala, vad bör en miljövetenskaplig utbildning innehålla,hur ska undervisningen genomföras och varför organiseras den som den gör?Det miljövetenskapliga ämnets framväxt har skapat läraktiviteter såsom: case,rollspel, debatt, och projekt. Alla har olika syfte vad gäller bearbetning av innehålloch färdighetsträning. Verklighetsanknuten undervisning är ett viktigt målinom det miljövetenskapliga utbildningsområdet och genom en genomtänktdesign kan studenterna få stöd för lärande inför de arbetsuppgifter de kommeratt möta i teori och i praktik.

    • This article reviews ten predictive validity studies of the Swedish Scholastic Assessment Test (SweSAT). A primary result is that the predictive validity of the SweSAT seems to be highly dependent upon the study programme being examined; that is, the predictive validity is better at some programmes than others. When compared with the upper-secondary school grade point average, the predictive validity of the SweSAT seems to be fairly good, but there are major differences between study programmes in this case as well. However, it is suggested that the validity of the results is to some extent threatened by methodological issues. A general conclusion is, therefore, that there is room for improving the test itself, as well as the way that predictive validity studies are carried out.

    • Participation as a pedagogy and democratic value turns out to be a critical element in students’ completion of school. Completed education is a regional development project in which a survey has been conducted in order to identify successful strategies to promote completed education in school. In an analysis, in the context of the survey, with an emphasis on school and participation as a pedagogy and democratic value, several findings are shown. It turns out that the importance of participation manifests itself through an emphasis on the societal and democratic mission of school; school ethos; the value praxis of school; pedagogical approach; and viewing the pupil as capable. It is, in more detail, shown that it is particularly crucial to understand the completion of school as a pedagogical problem; create sustainable institutional structures not bound to one person; and to make sure that students are participants in their own studies.
