  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nordisk Barnehageforskning. - : Nordisk Barnehageforskning. - 1890-9167. ; 6:7, s. 1-8

    • Title: Where “the wild things” are: An author of children’s books on a visit to the suburbs Abstract:Few studies have been carried out on children’s literature from a post-colonial perspective. In this article, we look closer at four picture books recently published in Sweden with the purpose of giving children from urban areas patterns of identification. The aim of our study is to see how the ‘suburb’ is articulated as a multi-accented sign. Three themes are elaborated in our analysis, i.e. loneliness and alienation, drug abuse and misery as well as small business occurrence. We also discuss the consequences for children in early years of an encounter with a distorted or alienated view of suburban culture.

  • Prediction of academic performance by means of the Swedish scholastic assessment test
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research. - : Taylor & Francis/Routledge. - 0031-3831 .- 1470-1170. ; 52:6, s. 565-581
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article reviews ten predictive validity studies of the Swedish Scholastic Assessment Test (SweSAT). A primary result is that the predictive validity of the SweSAT seems to be highly dependent upon the study programme being examined; that is, the predictive validity is better at some programmes than others. When compared with the upper-secondary school grade point average, the predictive validity of the SweSAT seems to be fairly good, but there are major differences between study programmes in this case as well. However, it is suggested that the validity of the results is to some extent threatened by methodological issues. A general conclusion is, therefore, that there is room for improving the test itself, as well as the way that predictive validity studies are carried out.

    • Participation as a pedagogy and democratic value turns out to be a critical element in students’ completion of school. Completed education is a regional development project in which a survey has been conducted in order to identify successful strategies to promote completed education in school. In an analysis, in the context of the survey, with an emphasis on school and participation as a pedagogy and democratic value, several findings are shown. It turns out that the importance of participation manifests itself through an emphasis on the societal and democratic mission of school; school ethos; the value praxis of school; pedagogical approach; and viewing the pupil as capable. It is, in more detail, shown that it is particularly crucial to understand the completion of school as a pedagogical problem; create sustainable institutional structures not bound to one person; and to make sure that students are participants in their own studies.

  • Teaching one thing at a time or several things together? : Teachers changing their way of handling the object of learning by being engaged in a theory-based professional learning community in mathematics and science
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Teachers and Teaching. - Abingdon : Routledge. - 1354-0602 .- 1470-1278. ; 22:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Twelve lower secondary schoolteachers in mathematics and science were asked to teach a topic of their choice during a lesson that was video-recorded. We were able to analyse 10 of the cases and we found that all of them were similar in one respect: concepts and principles were introduced one at a time, each one followed by examples of the concept or principle in question, apparently to highlight its essential meaning. All the teachers participated in three modified lesson studies with three cycles in four different groups during three semesters. The modified lesson studies were built on a theoretical idea supported by a large number of recent studies. The theory states that new meanings (of concepts and principles, for instance) are learned through engaging with instances of contrasting concepts and principles. The core idea is that new meanings derive from differences, not from sameness. After the three modified lesson studies, the teachers were asked to once again teach the same topic as in the recorded lessons before the lesson studies. The new lessons were also recorded and the analysis showed that there was one thing in common in all cases: all of the 10 teachers dealt with the relevant concepts and principles in relation to each other (i.e. simultaneously) and not one at a time. By thus bringing out the differences between them, their meaning was made possible to grasp for the students. The study lends support to the conjecture that the modified lesson study is a powerful tool for enabling teachers to structure the content of their teaching in accordance with a principle that is more powerful in making learning possible, even if this contradicts their taken-for-granted practice.

  • Performativity as pretence : A study of testing practices in a compulsory school in Sweden
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Ethnography and Education. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1745-7823 .- 1745-7831. ; 7:3, s. 297-309
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Our aim in this paper is to analyse the impact of the standardised test on classroom practices in grade 5 in a compulsory school in western Sweden. In our analysis, the use of the concept of pedagogic device provides a framework for understanding hos high-stakes, standardised testing regulates classroom discourse and teachers' and students' classroom behaviours. The study was conducted during 2006-2007 as part of a larger ethnographic inquiry. The results reveal how the demands of the test impact upon the daily work in the classroom. In the neo-liberal apporach to governance, stnadardised tests have become an important measure of quality. School practices run the risk of being viewed as valuable, only relative to the performance of teachers and students at the individueal level. This view shifts the focus from a discussion about a societal responsibility to ensure that all children have equitable access to education, to a debate centred on the individualäs responsibility to perform. The analysis reveals that the test was not carried out as intended. However, both teacher and the students respond to the test situation and the results as if it had been and as if the test really mattered.

  • The meaning of social climate of learning environments : some reasons why we do not care enough about it.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Learning Environments Research. - : Springer. - 1387-1579 .- 1573-1855. ; 13:2, s. 89-104
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to analyse reasons underlying the neglect of social climate in education. It discusses the relevance of the concept of social climate in learning environments: presenting evidence of its effects; its importance in special needs and inclusive education; presenting existing differences between settings; discussing the contribution of social climate to teachers’ professional autonomy. The arguments support the view that social climate is an essential factor in educational processes and make incomprehensible the scarce attention reserved to it in educational policy, research and teacher programs. Indications of neglect in the Swedish context are presented. The resistance towards the concept of social climate is related to a) dualistic and hierarchic views; b) characteristics of bureaucratic systems; c) reductionist interpretations; d) difficulties in handling and evaluating social values and goals; e) post-modern criticism of scientific knowledge and psychology. Implications for counteracting reductive interpretations and meeting resistance and criticism are discussed.

  • Educating towards civic and professional responsibility : the future of higher education?
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Utbildning och Demokrati. - Örebro : Örebro universitet. - 1102-6472 .- 2001-7316. ; 17:2, s. 5-12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This special issue of Education & Democracy – Journal of Didactics and Educational Policy (in Swedish: Utbildning & Demokrati – tidskrift för didaktik och utbildningspolitik) is dedicated to the challenges raised by current conditions in higher education when it comes to promoting civic and professional responsibility. The four articles emerged from a collaboration between research centres in Örebro and Oslo, initiated at the NERA Conference in Copenhagen in 2003, which has been followedup with seminar meetings and presentations, most recently at the NERA Conference in Copenhagen and the ISA Conference in Oslo, both in 2008. Our shared ambition has been to interrogate and critically discuss central aspects of the recent development of mass higher education, with regard to its role in educating towards engaged citizenship and professional responsibility. The cases are situated in a Scandinavian context, yet discussed in relation to the influence of European higher education policy. At a time when the dominant language

  • Kommentar till Anders Fredriksson recension av boken Utbildning som kommunikation. Deliberativa samtal som möjlighet
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Pedagogisk forskning i Sverige.

  • New trends in Swedish educational research
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research. - Oxfordshire, UK : Routledge. - 0031-3831 .- 1470-1170. ; 50:4, s. 383-396
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    •   What new tendencies can be made out in Swedish educational research in the last three decades? Briefly, the following developments are described: In the 1970s, a long-prevailing emphasis on quantitative research was challenged by a number of different qualitative methods. Traditional sociology of education, meanwhile, was challenged by the new sociology of education. During the1980s, the dominant trend was a ‘‘didacticisation’’ of educational research, and here two main strands can be discerned, based in phenomenography and curriculum theory. Didactics very soon made its presence felt in educational policy, and in a major evaluation of Swedish educational research the two largely didactics-based traditions of ‘‘teaching and learning’’ and ‘‘curriculum theory’’ were identified as internationally the most significant. In the 1990s, educational research took a ‘‘linguistic turn’’—involving a wide-ranging shift in emphasis towards language and communication—with the result that new perspectives emerged. In addition, the philosophy of education experienced a powerful renaissance, partly as a reflection of the new focus on language and communication, but also in other respects, leading to a reawakening of interest in both classical and modern philosophy (of education).
