  • 2010
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study is about police students’ and professional police officers’ experienced competence in mental preparation training. The aim with the study is to compare how police students’ in the beginning and in the end of the Basic Training Programme for Police Officers perceive their competence in mental preparation training and how a selection of these students perceive their competence after one respectively two and a half year as police officers. The aim is also to compare the formal competence required of students who have passed the Basic Training Programme for Police Officers with the competence students actually think they have, and the formal competence required within the police profession with the competence police officers with differently long time as professionals experience that they have. Moreover the study includes a comparison between the formal and experienced competence in the Basic Training Programme for Police Officers and in the police profession. The empirical data of the study is based on a web questionnaire to the different groups of students and follow-up interviews with a selection of these students. The results show that the students’ perceived competence increases during the Basic Training Programme and that the experienced competence at the end of the programme to a relatively large extent corresponds to the formal competence of the programme. The difference between the formal competence required in the police profession and the police officers’ experienced competence is relatively small. The police officers’ experience though is that their competence in mental preparation training is not requested in the profession to any larger extent. Key words: Police, competence, mental preparation training.

  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Educational investments may serve several purposes. They can be carried out in order to increase the students’ knowledge within a specific discipline, but also to increase the level of knowledge within an organization. ’Silviahemmet’ in Stockholm, which was inaugurated in the year of 1996, had as one of its objectives to become a school for education of assistant nurses working in the area of dementia care. The educational program had the aim to educate assistant nurses to become supervisors in dementia care, the assistant nurses should acquire an edge competence in the close care of patients with dementia. This educational investment has been investigated in order to study the significance an educational investment may have for a health care organization in which some of the health care personnel has participated in an education and moreover, to study how this knowledge is communicated within the organization. Thus, the overall purpose of my study is to describe and analyse the significance an educational investment is given, by the participating assistant nurses as well as by other health care personnel. The study was carried out during the year 2005 and concerned assistant nurses educated in the years between 1996 and 2001. Four different data gathering techniques were used; questionnaires, interviews, observations at two workplaces and conversations with health care personnel. The questionnaire concerned all 34 assistant nurses who had participated in specialist training in dementia care during this period. Seven persons were interviewed.Summing up my results, the knowledge that the assistant nurses have achieved from the education is theoretical and social knowledge of dementia. This constituted a platform to stand on for the assistant nurses in their work when meeting the patientAn important result of the study, concerning the importance of the assistant nurses specialist training for other categories of health care personnel, is the lack of verbal communication between personnel categories that seems to be at hand. Furthermore, dialogues or shared reflections among the personnel could not be noticed. Often it was solely one-way communication that existed on the wards. A knowledge creating dialogue was missing. Questions were asked, but only regarding about "what" and "when" a work task should be performed, not "why" something should be carried out.An obstacle regarding the communication of new knowledge appears to be the gap existing between an educational investment and the everyday reality of the health care organization. The result of the study shows the importance of adopting the theoretical knowledge to the reality that the health care personnel is facing. Other obstacles seem to be status and hierarchies. The study showed that the assistant nurses working hours did not allow for educating health care personnel in dementia. There ought to be possibilities within the organization to make space for the use and communication of new knowledge through the supervising of health care personnel caring for elderly with dementia. This in turn may lead to better health care for elderly. This supervision could take the form of a dialogue and shared reflections concerning the patients and their need of health care.

  • Små barns sociala liv på vilan : Om deltagande och ordningsskapande i förskolan
  • 2013
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis examines how very young children (1-3 years) organize participation during naptime, a recurrent activity of everyday life in preschools. Focus is on how these children practice their social and cultural understandings of the local order and thus establish various local orders as part of how they shape their peer cultures and the routines of the naptime. An ethnomethodological and conversation analytic (EM/CA) perspective is used to explore the organisation of the local orders oriented to by the children in their participation during naptime. A special interest is directed at how small children use embodied actions and various semiotic resources as they actively take part in this preschool routine. The data, collected during fieldwork with participant observations, consist of video recordings and field notes. The recordings are analysed using EM/CA methods, including detailed attention to embodied features of interaction along with spatial and material arrangements. Transcriptions of interaction comprise representations of both verbal and visual aspects, e.g. gestures, gaze and movement through the room. The study shows that naptime involves more than sleep. It is demonstrated how very young children, through interaction with each other and the pedagogues, are active agents in sustaining, creating, re-creating and challenging the local orders of naptime. Through embodied actions and the use of various semiotic resources, the children are able to create time and space for their own peer cultures within this institutional routine. Overall, the study sheds light on the sophisticated ways in which very young children use their knowledge of cultural and institutional routines – the spatial organisation of sleep mattresses, artefacts (e.g. blankets, pacifiers and soft toys) and the sequential structures of the naptime – to constitute spaces for play and joyful interaction with peers and pedagogues. In spite of their sometimes limited vocal language, these very young children are able to use a variety of semiotic resources to constitute their own social life within naptime, often through secondary adjustments to institutional and adult structured order.
