  • Problematizing parents : representations of multi-ethnic areas, youth and urban unrest
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Reimagineering the nation. - Frankfurt am Main : Peter Lang Publishing Group. - 9783631715185 - 9783631715208 - 3631715188 ; , s. 209-233
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The causes of and solutions to juvenile delinquency and social unrest amongthe youth in so-called Swedish multi-ethnic urban areas are frequently represented inpublic-institutional discourse as related to migrant parents. These are, the authors argue, consequently exposed to policies for ‘activation’, ‘responsibilisation’ and ‘normalisation’.

  • A Bibliometric Analysis of Computational Social Science in Turkish Academia
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: 2023 31st Signal Processing and Communications Applications Conference (SIU). - : IEEE conference proceedings. - 9798350343557 ; , s. 1-4
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using bibliometrics, this study explores the land-scape of social computing sciences within the Turkish academic sphere. The analysis conducted at both the country and organizational levels reveals that collaborations in the field of social computing are not solely influenced by geographical factors. Through network analysis of keyword co-occurrences, distinct thematic patterns emerge, highlighting areas such as health-related applications, the social implications of computational approaches, the intersection of computational methods with the economy and agriculture, machine learning techniques, and the utilization of big data analytics for business applications. These findings provide evidence of the multidisciplinary nature inherent in social computing research.

  • Outdoor Office Work : An Interactive Research Project Showing the Way Out
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Frontiers in Psychology. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 1664-1078. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The physical boundaries of office work have become increasingly flexible. Work is conducted at multiple locations outside the office, such as at clients' premises, at home, in cafés, or when traveling. However, the boundary between indoor and outdoor environment seems to be strong and normative regarding how office work is performed. The aim of this study was to explore how office work may be conducted outdoors, understanding how it is being experienced by office employees and identifying its contextual preconditions. Based on a two-year interactive research project, the study was conducted together with a Swedish municipality. Fifty-eight participants engaged in the collaborative learning process, including 40 half-day workshops and reflective group discussions, co-interviews, and participants' independent experimentation of bringing work activities outdoors. Data was collected via interviews, group discussions and a custom-made mobile application. The results showed that a wide range of work activities could be done outdoors, both individually and in collaboration with others. Outdoor work activities were associated with many positive experiences by contributing to a sense of well-being, recovery, autonomy, enhanced cognition, better communication, and social relations, but also with feelings of guilt and illegitimacy. Conditions of importance for outdoor office work to happen and function well were found in the physical environment, where proximity to urban greenspaces stood out as important, but also in the sociocultural and organizational domains. Of crucial importance was managers' attitudes, as well as the overall organizational culture on this idea of bringing office work outdoors. To conclude, if working life is to benefit from outdoor office work, leaders, urban planners and policymakers need to collaborate and show the way out.

  • Attitudes towards mental illness among health care students at Swedish universities : a follow-up study after completed clinical placement
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Nurse Education Today. - : Elsevier Sciencedirect. - 0260-6917 .- 1532-2793. ; 29:6, s. 660-665
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to examine the changes in attitudes towards mental illness after theorethical education and clinical placement among students from university programmes preparing for different kinds of health professions. Three different questionnaries were used, measuring the level of familaritiy with mental illness and attitudes towards mental illness in general and toward specific mental illnesses. The data were collected on two occasions, before the theorethical course and after the completed clinical placement. The result showed that the attitudes toward mental illnes in general had changed in a less stigmatising direction after the clinical placement. On the other hand, attitudes toward specific illnesses did not show any major changes.

  • Geografiska perspektiv i utbildning av lärare i samhällskunskap
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nordidactica. - Karlstad : CSD Karlstad. - 2000-9879. ; 1, s. 41-52
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Teachers in Social Studies can benefit from geographical perspectives in their teaching of Social Studies in elementary and high school. The aim is to connect geographical perspectives to various social processes and to integrate it in teaching of Social Studies. But how can the relevance of geographical perspectives in an education for teachers in Social Studies be motivated and to what benefits can it be internalized? I will try to answer that question in this article. This relevance is mainly, with basis in a literature study, focused on democracy, sustainable development and digital literacy. It is also relevant by giving teachers a broader teaching skill and thus they are able to help pupils achieve higher-order skills.

  • Global Learning for Sustainable Development : A Historical Review
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - Basel : MDPI. - 2071-1050. ; 13:6
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Despite continued efforts by educators, UN declarations and numerous international agreements, progress is still limited in handling major global challenges such as ecosystem collapse, accelerating climate change, poverty, and inequity. The capacity to collaborate globally on addressing these issues remains weak. This historical review of research on global learning for sustainable development (GLSD) aims to clarify the diverse directions that research on GLSD has taken, to present the historical development of the research area, and highlight emerging research issues. The review summarizes key findings of 53 peer-reviewed publications, published in English in the period 1994-2020 identified with the search terms "global learning" and "sustainable development", sustainability or GLSD, respectively. The review documented a gradually growing knowledge base, mostly authored by scholars located in the global North. Conclusions point to what we might achieve if we could learn from one another in new ways, moving beyond Northern-centric paradigms. It is also time to re-evaluate core assumptions that underlie education for sustainable development more generally, such as a narrow focus on formal learning institutions. The review provides a benchmark for future reviews of research on GLSD, reveals the emerging transformative structure of this transdisciplinary field, and offers reference points for further research.

  • Challenges and Learning Outcomes in a Mutual Municipal Partnership on Education for Sustainable Development from Southern African/North European Perspectives
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Book of Abstract: Vitalizing partnerships - Moving forward to a sustainable future. - : Sanord.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Two cities, Swakopmund and Malmö, in Namibia and Sweden have developed a strong mutual partnership on sustainable development. The collaboration started within The Municipal Partnership Programme at the Swedish International Centre for Local Democracy (ICLD), working with poverty reduction through local democracy development funded by SIDA. The municipal partnership aims to increase civil influence by strengthening local and regional political governance organization within certain core areas, e.g. equity/inclusion, transparency, possibility to demand accountability and/or citizen participation. During 2012-2014 the two cities collaborated on two projects; Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Eco Tourism. The aim of this study is to deepen the understanding of processes and learning outcomes of SDG 17 in a mutual municipal partnership in the ESD-project focusing experiences on challenges and solutions. Eight project team member i.e. municipal officials, teachers, museum- and marine pedagogues, as well as three senior municipal officials in the Project Steering Committee were interviewed using semi-structured questions in the second year of the ESD-project. A phenomenographic approach was applied to analyse the transcriptions of nearly six hours recorded interview material. The findings show the experience of various challenges the respondents faced, how the challenges were solved and the benefits of the learning outcomes. This were discussed also in longer terms to shed light on what South and North can learn from one another by being in a mutual partnership, focusing how work processes contribute to develop democratic governance locally in the municipalities.

  • Priority areas in municipality planning : Ecosystem services, environmental impact assessments and research areas
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: One Ecosystem. - : Pensoft Publishers. - 2367-8194. ; 1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background Several pressing issues face municipal planners including increased land use and climate change. Managing these issues requires a balance between different actions to accommodate citizen’s demands of ecosystem services (ES) and development projects. The implementation of ES as a new tool for assessments needs to be contrasted by research considering existing tools such as Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). ES has been introduced as a policy tool at the governmental level but implementation at the local and regional scale is still needed; municipalities could benefit from collaboration with the research community for state of the art methods. One obstacle for implementation of ES is that it is not always easy for laymen to understand and additionally, the ES concept may be weakly supported by science. The municipalities realize that a society on its way towards sustainability takes advantage of new knowledge and that interactions with research will put them in the forefront of new scientific questions. The municipalities ask for research that takes a citizen perspective and research that prioritizes questions other than pure environmental considerations. Priorities in municipality planning are based on local conditions and rely on EIA. Many ecological indicators are already covered in EIA and this is reflected in Swedish Comprehensive Plans (SCP) documents, yet need further analysis is needed to be a part of ES. The SCPs present concepts at a policy level and rarely provide a more detailed plan of action compatible with the ES approach. New information We found that the use of ES concepts in Swedish Comprehensive Plans and in EIA is still not common and in need of further support from research and in practice. The EIA is decisive for comprehensive planning documents in the Swedish municipalities and follows standard format over time and between municipalities. ES is focused on human needs while the EIA describes place based assessments on environmental impact rather than feedback to the society by the intervention. Municipalities of south Sweden ask for research support in many different areas, for instance how to set up proper organization for implementation of ES and environmental issues, but priorities are based on their local conditions. The results shows that collaboration between stakeholders and researchers is needed which can create incentives, so that the decisions made by individuals, communities, corporations, and governments may be able to promote widely shared values compatible with ES. Researchers and municipalities who work on an operational level face many challenges in promoting greater use of the ES approach, with some of them yet to be defined. We conclude that implementation of ES could draw from lessons learned in the use of EIA. Further, it is presented that ES has the potential for greater public and stakeholder feedback into decisions as compared to EIA.
