  • Under urban mask: On rural landscapes with different logics
  • 2014
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • As a result of natural hazards, ecological disasters, lawlessness, wars and fluctuations in economy, numerous European landscapes slowly but surely lose their ‘raison d’être’. The consequence of this is a continuous process of degradation, both in respect to infrastructure as well as the social fabric. Effectively, the changes that occur create specific landscapes that encompass elements, which, at a first glance, could be considered both urban and rural. However, these are prone to mechanisms other than the progressive blurring of the rural-urban dichotomy brought on by urbanization; they are subject to a different kind of rationale. Are they just dissonant nests of desolation or merely slumbering resources for future creative uses? How do we view them? How should we handle them? To the fore of this special session we bring analyses of rural landscapes endowed with specific urban traits whose common denominator is their dysfunctional character. The main task of this special session is to unravel the logics of these particular landscapes by means of: (1) Cognition of the factors and mechanisms that contributed to their emergence; (2) Analyses of the processes that take place in them in order to: (a) determine their course and dynamics, (b) establish potential directions of change; (c) propose methodological solutions – how to do research; (3) Generalization of the research results in search of common problems and similarities in order to: (a) formulate universal methodological assumptions, (b) marshal solutions that are useful in decision-making on administrative and institutional levels. The session has attracted 10 presentations addressing any of these issues in the context of dysfunctional rural landscapes with interesting perspectives and innovative approaches. The spectrum of this double session included: post-war rural areas in Amsterdam (J.E. Abrahamse), Zagreb’s peri-urban fringe (A. Toskić, D. Njegač & D. Orešić), rural transformation from urban influences in Olsztyn (M. Wasilewicz-Pszczółkowska, A. Szczepańska & A. Senetra), degraded urban agglomerations in Poland (R. Krzysztofik, I. Kantor-Pietraga & T. Spórna), landscapes transcending rural-urban characteristics in Gothenburg (M. Dymitrow, R. Brauer, G. Holmertz, B. Apostolovska-Toševska, F. Holmberg & L. Johansson), landscape discriminants in valorization of rural areas in Poland (A. Bocheńska-Skałecka, Z. Kuriata, I. Niedźwiecka-Filipiak, A. Podolska & L. Serafin), degraded towns in Silesia (R. Szmytkie), agri-ghettos in central Poland (J. Biegańska, E. Grzelak-Kostulska & M. Dymitrow), Bucharest's Romani ghetto (D. Teodorescu) and urban agriculture in socially deprived areas of Thessaloniki (E. Gavriilidou, D. Dedousi, E. Oureilidou & M. Ritou).

  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • GRASP (Group and Social Psychology) is an interdisciplinary conference, which aims to provide a community around social psychological issues for researchers, practitioners, and graduate students from the Nordic countries within the fields of psychology, sociology, education, behavioural sciences and social work to share, exchange, learn, and develop preliminary results, new concepts, ideas, principles, and methodologies, as well as bridging the gaps between paradigms, encouraging interdisciplinary collaborations, and advancing our understanding of groups and social psychology.GRASP 2014 was the ninth Nordic conference was held in Linköping and hosted by the Department of Behavioural Sciences and Learning at Linköping University. The theme of the conference this year was on inclusion and exclusion as social processes. Twenty-two papers were accepted and presented at the conference. Keynote speech was given by Dr Siân Jones from Oxford Brookes University and Dr Ken Mavor from University of St Andrews. In line with the main theme of the conference, Siân Jones talked about “Bullying and belonging: Experimental data, real-world data, tears, and tantrums”. Ken Mavor talked about “Encapsulating the things that matter: Exploring identities for learning, social action and wellbeing”.The topics of the individual papers at GRASP 2014 were: (a) the role of categorization in personal change through participation in collective action, (b) students’ perspectives on bullying incidents, (c) mindfulness in values education in schools, (d) team-training and the executive team’s organizational influence, (e) using discursive psychology to show how students do ‘being collaborative’ in group work, (f) operational leadership and knowledge-transfer in high risk operations, (g) communication of risk in oil and gas megaprojects, (h) verbal expressions of “compassion” in an academic context, (i) a descriptive study of work groups in the Swedish and U.S. economy, (j) challenges and panaceas, as experienced by physicians, when introducing a patient centred and team based round, (k) leadership and communication in cross-cultural teams in a study of Korean/Scandinavian collaboration, (l) conscientiousness and agreeableness among prisoners, (m) ‘dark values’ – the dark triad hiding in Schwartz’ value orientation, (n) gender and legitimacy in student project groups, (o) between Skylla and Karybdis within academia – peer leadership or management, (p) illusion of invulnerability, need for cognition and resisting persuasion, (q) the significance of management climate on the quality of elderly care, (r) benevolence towards men and women, and traditional views of upbringing – a backlash to gender equality, (s) the role of equality in the decision making process in small groups, (t) bullying and defender behaviour amongst school children – the importance of moral emotions and moral disengagement, and (u) development of learning models through social experiments considering widening recruitment of university students. These proceedings bring you seven of the 22 papers from the conference.

  • STPIS 2015: Socio-Technical Perspective in IS Development. Proceedings of the 1st International Workshop on Socio-Technical Perspective in IS Development (STPIS'15) co-located with the 27th International Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering (CAiSE 2015)
  • 2015
  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • * This workshop’s long term goal is to foster a community of Information Systems researchers and practitioners who are interested in the socio-technical perspective and see it as an important approach to improve the quality and reduce the costs of the information systems that have become an essential part of our lives in this 21st century. All communities need meeting places where they can discuss and debate existential issues. These workshop proceedings are the first attempt to set a broad platform for discussion and debate on the benefits and problems of viewing information systems as socio-technical artefacts. * In the first presentation session of the workshop, we look at education, tools and terminology. There are a number of questions asked and answered. Can we mix ethnographic educations with engineering education? What should be included in a good socio-technical analyst’s tools box? Are the terms that both practitioners and theoreticians use when discussing a socio-technical perspective correct or incorrect or are they just out of date for modern organizations and businesses? * In the second session, we have two papers that consider the socio-technical perspective as a collaborations and coordination constituent of a system. That is to say the socio-technical perspective is seen as an independent variable and the performance outcome of the work system in focus as the dependent variable. The third paper in this session views the topic from a work-system lens. * In the third session we asks more fundamental questions as to the nature of mind and organization of work. One paper questions whether the socio-technical perspective affects the mind or the mind is affected by the socio-technical perspective. * The last session of the workshop and the post session are called diverse issues and is designed to capture both the breadth and depth of socio-technical perspective. * All and all, these first workshop proceedings have hopefully set a good broad base for discussion and debate on the strength and weakness of a socio-technical perspective in the information systems research and teaching domain. * The organizers are grateful to the members of Program Committee for their excellent work of reviewing submitted papers in short time. We are also thankful to Easy-Chair for providing us with a tool to manage the workshop free of charge. Many thanks to Jeffy Mwakalinga who undertook the task of preparing and submitting the proceedings to CEUR. Stockholm June 1, 2015 STPIS’15 organizers Stewart Kowalski Peter Bednar Ilia Bider

  • Proceedings (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • At the instigation of Professor Bengt-Erik Eriksson and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Linköping University, researchers from three faculties and several disciplines gathered for a seminar in November 2004 with the commission to discuss the possibility offorming a common research p latform for studies of visualization, visuality and visual culture. The outcome of this meeting between technologists, medical researchers, social scientists and humanities scholars was the founding of a permanent seminar group that was to meet regularly in order to make an inventory of  and to present ongoing research wirhin the given field and to write applications for research grants. Visual accessibility, Visualization of dynamiccourses, Remediation and Yisualization and learning are some of the possible common projects that the group called VVV has identified over the three years of its existence.Chaired by Dr Anna Sparrman, a senior researeher at the department of Child Studies at the Tema Institute, the VVVgroup arranged a two-day Iong workshop under the heading Images, Science and Knowledge at Villa Fridhem south of Norrkö ping in October 2007.The aim of the workshop was to discuss the use of images in various scientific practices, focusing not only on the usage bur also on the different ways of defining visualization and on the various theoretical approaches to the concept image. Four key-note leetures and eight shorter presentations of current projects showed clearly the diversity of the use of images in scientific practices and need for a continuous discussion about scientific imagery and the prospeers of a common understanding of what an image really is.The invited key-note speakers were Professor W.]. T. Mitchell, university of Chicago and Dr Thomas Parathe and Dr Yvonne Eriksson, both from Mälardalen University College. White Professor Mitchells two leetures circled around the general problem of defining an image and the contemporary use of images to comment on and form political opinions instantly, Dr Parathe and Dr Eriksson had more specific approaches, pictures as tools for navigation and tactile perception and tactile understanding of images. The shorter presentations ranged from Haptic visualization of proteins to nations of visuality in a Swedish campaign against food advertising to children. All leetures and presentations of the workshop were thoroughly documented. The speakers' manuscripts, notes made during the proceedings and interviews with the key-note speakers eonstirute the basis for this publication which hopefully will function as a point of departure for further discussion. Accordingly we want to thank Anna Öst, Marcus Mattsson, Christina Lagneby and Alexandra Uhrefalk who with accuracy and zeal carried out their tasks as secretaries.Linköping, April 2008Bengt Lärkner and Gary Svensson
