  • Gender and Management : New Directionsin Research and Continuing Patternsin Practice
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Management. - Oxford : WileyBlackwell. - 1045-3172 .- 1467-8551. ; 19:Supplement s1, s. S38-S49
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Management and managing are characteristically gendered in many respects. Over the last 30 years there has been a major international growth of studies on gender relations in organizations in general and in management in particular. This applies in both empirical research and more general theoretical analyses. The area of gender, organizations and management is now recognized in at least some quarters outside of itself as a legitimate, even an important, area. This is to be seen in the current market in publications, in the activities of mainstream international publishers, in journals, in courses within degree programmes, and in research groups, networks, and conferences and conference streams. Nevertheless, the field of activity is still somewhat precarious, in some ways very precarious. The vast majority of mainstream work on organizations and management has no gender analysis whatsoever or if it has it is very simple and crude. In business schools and university departments the position of gender-explicit work is very far from established. Even critical management studies, which may be concerned with, for example, power, class, labour process, resistance, discourse, deconstruction, does not necessarily take gender into account.

  • Participatory action research on webs of caring in the digital age across four European countries
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Quality in Ageing and Older Adults. - West Yorkshire : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 2044-1827 .- 2044-1835.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The digital age requires people of all ages to communicate and organise their lives through digital technologies. The project EQualCare investigates how the growing population of older people living alone is managing this transition, how it shapes their (non-)digital social networks and what changes on a local level need to be brought about. This paper aims to give insight into the process of participatory action research (PAR) with older people in the community across four countries and reflects on experiences made by academic and co-researchers.Design/methodology/approach: Following the emancipatory underpinnings of PAR, which aims to reduce inequalities through collaboration and co-design, EQualCare involved nine teams of co-researchers across Finland, Germany, Latvia and Sweden making older people the centre of policy development. Co-researchers were involved in formulating research aims, collecting data, reflecting on data, formulating and disseminating recommendations for local policy stakeholders.Findings: Co-researchers’ motivation to invest considerable time and effort was driven by a desire to create a more equal future for older people living alone. Moreover, they were keen to involve marginalised older people and became frustrated when this proved difficult. Power dynamics played a role throughout the process but became productive as roles and responsibilities were renegotiated. Doing PAR with older people can be emotionally challenging for co-researchers when negative feelings around ageing are encountered.Originality/value: The paper advances understanding on the process of PAR in ageing research by reflecting on the social, cultural and political contexts of doing PAR with diverse sets of older people.

  • Rethinking the place of violence : The interrelations between welfare regimes, gender regimes and violence regimes
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • What happens when we focus primarily on violence as a central question – either within the gender regime approach or by making violence regime an approach in itself? The paper first interrogates gender regimes theoretically and empirically through a focus on violence, and then develops violence regimes as a fruitful approach, conceptualizing violence as inequality in its own right, and a means to deepen analysis of gender relations, gender domination, and policy.

  • What’s the problem with older people? A policy analysis of selected Finnish reports and documents on ageing, care and digitalisation
  • 2023. - 1
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This project report derives from the ‘Equal Care - Alone but connected? Digital (in)equalities in care work and generational relationships among older people living alone’ (EQualCare), that is part of the Joint Programming Initiative More Years, Better Lives (JPI MYBL) funding programme. To quote from the original project proposal:“EQualCare aims to further understanding of, and policy development on, the intersections of digitalisation with intergenerational care work and care relationships of older people living alone, and to contribute to reducing inequalities through collaboration and co-design. EQualCare interrogates inequalities by gender, cultural and socio-economic background both between and within countries, with their very different demographics and policy backgrounds.” (Equal Care - Alone but connected? …, 2020, p. 2)The background to the project concerns the recognition that digitalisation has brought significant changes to perceived and enacted care relationships in terms of distance and proximity between people. Whilst the digital age adds new cultural expectations of care, collaboration and mutuality, it also has the potential to perpetuate inequalities between generations, income groups and countries. This is due at least in part to the care resources and infrastructure that are readily available. Moreover, as people live longer, seek more autonomous living, do not tolerate unsatisfactory family or household relationships, and are obliged for various reasons to live alone, either temporarily or on a more permanent basis, living alone has become a central theme to understanding later life. Living alone raises further specific challenges to care work and on- and off-line care relationships, particularly in contexts and situations where tensions with close or immediate hands-on physical caring, as well as caring responsibilities involving younger generations, arise. Thus, the relation of (self)care and digital webs of caring work towards and from family members, friends and indeed wider circles of neighbours, acquaintances and those of similar service or mutual co-operation organisations and networks is of great empirical, policy and societal interest. (Equal Care -Alone but connected? …, 2020, p. 2)

  • The Case for Interdisciplinary Crisis Studies
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Global Discourse. - : Taylor & Francis. - 2326-9995 .- 2043-7897. ; 12:3-4, s. 465-486
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Alarming reports on crises are appearing and being published on a daily basis in different expressions from climate change, to people’s movement and displacement, to armed conflict. Claims to crisis may involve tangible displays of desperate refugees, civilian casualties or persisting, if not, permanent poverty. Moreover, crisis relates to more abstract concepts such as failing democracy, instability in the liberal world order or national and global economic inequality. Crisis, in a sense, seemingly weaves the contemporary world together (Latour 1993), and this trend is reinforced by the frequent occurrence of mediatized or media-tuned global crisis narratives, many of which are currently shaped by populist apocalyptic ideology (Judis 2016). At the same time, crisis refers to social forces that can disrupt life and frame realities in ways, which go beyond prevalent discursive narratives (Jaques 2009; Smith and Vivekananda 2009). Crisis can also serve as a turning point and an opportunity for transformational change in a system (e.g. Polanyi 1944; Walby 2015). In particular, we outline an interdisciplinary approach to crisis as both concept and event, and thus to crisis studies, that moves away from some tendencies to see crisis as ahistorical, but rather emphasises uncertainty and contingency.
