  • Navigating Innovation Spaces in Asia
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: UNU-Merit Conference, in the Nethlands on 26-28 November 2014. ; 2014:9, s. 1-33
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a conceptualization of firms navigating through innovation spaces, with a focus upon what they learn, and why, through an exploration of Asia. Asia, with its many countries, represents new sets of technological, market and innovative opportunities.

  • Fostering the Development of Emerging Knowledge Intensive Industry in China: The role of local governmnet
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Globelics conference 2015. ; 2015:404, s. 1-30
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How does the local government stimulate knowledge intensive industry, within a regional innovation system? That is the research question for this paper. We analyze the development of the nanotechnology industry in Suzhou and the electrical vehicle industry in Hangzhou. They are used as cases to analyze the role of local government, and we do so from four aspects, namely technology, human capital, market and finance. In these cases, the local government helped the emerging industry not only in stimulating technological collaboration but also in creating market demand. While the local governments stimulated all four aspects listed above, the incentive to create demand has been particularly crucial.

  • Firms navigating through innovation spaces: A conceptualization of how firms search and perceive technological, market and productive opportunities globally
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of evolutionary economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0936-9937 .- 1432-1386. ; 26:4, s. 785-802
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper focuses upon how to help explain how and why firms differential abilities to ‘navigate’ through three dimensions of innovation spaces influence their ability to recognize opportunities, and therefore, in longer run, be able to compete and generate aggregate economic growth. This paper is an initial step in developing this understanding. This paper therefore uses elements of existing theoretical and empirical understanding in a new combination, in order to propose a new synthetic conceptualisation of the innovation process in firms as the navigation of a complex space involving different types of opportunities. Empirically, these topics are increasingly important to both firms and economies, due to the globalization of all types of business activities – from research and development through production, service and customers.Globalization thus also requires a more complex theoretical understanding of how such interdependencies and interrelatedness affect firms, and the observation that firms struggle with search and opportunities on a global scale prompted this line of research to better conceptualize the processes.

  • Governance of Regional Innovation Systems: An Evolutionary Conceptual Model of How Firms Engage
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management proceedings, Vancouver, Canada. - 0065-0668. ; 2015:2364, s. 1-25
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper draws upon insights from social science, in order to propose a conceptualization of the governance of a regional innovation system. We are specifically interested in ones initiated through public policy and aiming to stimulate the competitiveness of firms through developing new technological knowledge through collaborative research involving different organizations. We are assuming firms choose whether, when and how to collaborate. This paper proposes a conceptual model, which focuses upon the governance processes at the regional level of this translation of knowledge into innovation and entrepreneurship. The underlying argumentation for the model is built from existing research. We interpret that regional innovation governance depends upon capacity building among three heterogeneous organizations – namely university-government-industry. This represents a case of a polycentric, adaptive, complex and self-organizing system, whereby collective action is supported by norms and institutions in order to develop a region resource pool. Hence, our expectation is that our conceptual model will help explain why different outcomes are possible. The concluding section discusses a future research agenda, by going further to explore how to define and analyze the attributes (mechanisms) enabling governance of a regional innovation system as well as to analyze how public policy and firms engage.

  • Ramifications for Western Firms of Navigating Through Innovation Spaces in Asia
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: McKelvey, M. and Bagchi-Sen, S. (2015). Innovation Spaces in Asia: Entrepreneurs, Multinational Enterprises and Policy. - Cheltenham, U.K. : Edward Elgar Publishers. - 9781783475674 ; , s. 333-353
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter draws upon a line of research to propose a conceptualization of innovation spaces, and focuses upon the implications for Asia. The main perspective taken in this chapter – and most of the book – is the firm perspective, requiring micro-data and a deep understanding set in a context, and this can be analyzed both through case studies and through quantitative data of macro trends and later, econometric techniques to test hypotheses.

  • The influence of collaboration on firm publications: Evidence from pharmaceutical cancer research
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management proceedings, Vancouver, Canada. Canada, 7-11 August 2015.. ; 2015:14244, s. 1-30
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Although bio-pharmaceutical companies engage intensely in collaboration as well as in scientific publications it is not well understood how and why the choice of distinct partner types affects the quality of companies’ scientific publications. We contribute to this gap in the existing literature by analyzing whether collaboration with particular types of partners and whether network embeddedness influences the quality of publications in cancer research, and specifically of the scientific publications of biotech and of pharmaceutical companies. Our empirical analysis employs two different measures for scientific quality, publication in top-tier journals and the number of forward citations. The results suggest that publication in top-tier journals may depend on different factors and collaboration patterns compared to the number of citations an article receives.

  • Understanding Innovation Spaces through Emerging Multinational Enterprises in China: An Explorative Case Study of a Chinese Wind Turbine Manufacture
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: McKelvey, M. and Bagchi-Sen, S. (2015). Innovation Spaces in Asia: Entrepreneurs, Multinational Enterprises and Policy. - Cheltenham, U.K. : Edward Elgar Publishers. - 9781783475674 ; , s. 103-123
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter firstly provides a theoretical framing to explicitly relate the entrepreneur (individual) with the venture (company) to the national innovation system in China. The proposed framework defines an innovation space as a multifaceted organism not restricted geographically; but rather seen as consisting of multiple levels, including institutional, organisational and geographical aspects. This chapter also provides empirical insights of this journey from entrepreneurial venture to multinational enterprise, by focusing upon the process of expansion and internationalization of research and development of the Chinese wind turbine manufacturer. In doing so, the chapter provides a thick case description, with many details about the development of this Chinese company in the renewable energy industry. Right from its establishment in 2006, the company has been emphasizing the importance of innovation for its activities.

  • Engaging Experts : Science-Policy Interactions and the Introduction of Congestion Charging in Stockholm
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Minerva. - : SPRINGER. - 0026-4695 .- 1573-1871 .- 1393-614X. ; 56:2, s. 183-207
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article analyzes the conditions for mobilizing the science base for development of public policy. It does so by focusing upon the science-policy interface, specifically the processes of direct interaction between scientists and scientifically trained experts, on the one hand, and agents of policymaking organizations, on the other. The article defines two dimensions - cognitive distance and expert autonomy - which are argued to influence knowledge exchange, in such a way as to shape the outcome. A case study on the implementation of congestion charges in Stockholm, Sweden, illustrates how the proposed framework pinpoints three central issues for understanding these processes: (1) Differentiating the roles of, e.g., a science-based consultancy firm and an academic environment in policy formation; (2) Examining the fit between the organizational form of the science-policy interface and the intended goals; and (3) Increasing our understanding of when policymaker agents themselves need to develop scientific competence in order to interact effectively with scientific experts.
