  • Is the Social Democracy Gone? Performing Feminisms in Times of Right-Wing Populism
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Dreaming Global Change, Doing Local Feminisms. - London : Routledge. - 9781138555990 - 9781315149820 ; , s. 81-98
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The chapter discusses feminist protests as performances in a political context where the vacuum that European social democracies have left behind has been filled by right-wing populism and their conservative supporters. This political situation places liberals and the left in an alien, disadvantageous position, while conservatives and right-wing populists appropriate the language of rebellion with renewed protests against feminism, liberalism, and social democracy. What remains is a feminist ‘we’ who want to defend freedoms and rights won after years of struggle. However, this ‘we’ is a very heterogeneous and fragmented one. While there is no recipe for feminist activism, it is instructive to examine various forms of feminist protest feminist activists/artists that have generated hope through interventions in anxious times.

  • Solidarity and Knowldege
  • 2009
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses the term solidarity in relation to knowledge, and the existing tension between a vital women’s movement on the one hand, and a feminist academic theory on the other. The raise of a highly capitalist and neoliberal notion of feminism, a sort of “free market feminism” is restricting and limiting the space for solidarity in feminist politics and theory. Jodi Dean’s term reflexive solidarity defines solidarity in terms of mutuality, responsibility and a need of recognizing common interests as the presumption for communication and relations between different communities. She shifts focus from a general and interpellated oppression to collectives that have chosen to work and fight together. This paper argues that feminist, antiracist and queer communities create new and different knowledge through collective acts and activism. Political Scientist Jane Mansbridge calls this kind of knowledge street theory in contrast to theories produced within the academy. Street theory is created in and by communities. Sometimes these ideas are picked up by academic scholarship, rearticulated, redefined and often ending up meaning something else they once meant in their street period. It is problematic that historians who chronicle political movements rarely address parallel developments in academic writing, and academic theorists are none-too-consistent about acknowledging the influence of direct-action politics on their scholarship.

  • Solidarity Lost and Found
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The Politics of Being on Stage.
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This book chapter discusses some trends in critical theory and activist aesthetics in contemporary feminist performing arts in Sweden. The 2000s have witnessed at least two “turns” in feminist theory, namely the affective turn and the social, or as it is called here, the solidarity turn. The status of poststructuralist theory has been widely debated and Marxist, class-based analyses have returned to the political and aesthetic agenda in Sweden. The focus has shifted – once again – from individual art making to collectives who have chosen to work and fight together. The backdrop of this discussion is the shift from a social democratic welfare state to a neoliberal one. In civil society the distinction between neoliberal and social democratic lies in the extent of personal freedom(s), including sexual and reproductive rights, and whether interpersonal engagements are marked by commercialisations and inequality or by mutuality and equality.

  • The 'Arab Spring' as a Milestone in Feminist Performance
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Milestones in Feminist Performance.
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter explores feminist performances in and after the so-called Arab Spring. Focusing mainly on Tunisia and Egypt, this chapter looks at the Arab Spring as a milestone which clearly marks a “before” and an “after.” It was a formative event, which provided new challenges and a new context within which feminist activists found themselves. While many had hoped that the toppling of old regimes would lead to a new, more open and free society, in many cases the opposite has happened. Feminists after the Arab Spring face even more repression, a crack-down on their organizations and many feminist groups have either had their assets frozen or been outright banned. This has led to new forms of organizing and feminist resistance. A key development explored in this chapter is the increased importance of digital platforms for feminist activism. The role of social media is often viewed as a significant factor in the (initial) successes of the Tunisian and Egyptian uprisings, and although this view has also been questioned in that it downplays the importance of human beings sacrificing their lives and bodies by taking to the streets, there is little doubt that the media landscapes of Egypt and Tunisia today are vastly different than before 2011. The uprisings played a major part (indeed a milestone) both in ushering in a new political context, but also in the lessons that was learned in terms of how to effectively use social media and other digital tools to affect change.
