  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter focuses on the relatively neglected domain of branding and the academic labour process, in particular in business schools. It is increasingly accepted that brands are not only marketing tools, they also potentially instruct and direct organizational members. In other words, branding is a means by which managers or leaders can exert control in the labour process through targeting employee subjectivities. Employer branding entails the alignment of employees, typically in service occupations, with how they profile themselves outwards to customers. Successful image management and branding tends to interact with identity. Kärreman and Rylander argues that branding activities can more fruitfully be seen as the management of meaning rather than as benign marketing tools. Professional labour in academia is both simultaneously consuming the brand and producing it. Accordingly, much of the performance of academic labour can be understood as branding work, that is, doing things to market the business school or university brand to an external audience.

  • Large firm acquisitions, spin-offs and links in the development of regional clusters of technology-intensive SMEs
  • 2000
  • Ingår i: High-technology Clusters, Networking and Collective Learning in Europe. - : Routledge. - 9781138731608 ; , s. 156-181
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter focuses on technology-related ownership changes between large and small high-technology firms. These include the spin-off of new Small and Medium Sized Enterprise (SME) from large firms, intermediate links between large and small firms, and large firm acquisition of technology-intensive SMEs. The chapter analyses patterns of large firm-small firm linkages, collaboration and ownership changes in the 10 European regions studied by the network. It argues that the entrepreneurial spin-offs concept is subdivided with respect to the latest employer: 'main incubator' or 'spin-off parent'. The chapter describes the interaction between large and small technology-intensive European firms. Empirical evidence from research by members of the Targeted Socio-Economic Research European network will be used to consider the questions. The questions are related to concepts like high-technology regions and industries; local technology-intensive SMEs; and a link between regional high-technology clusters and networks.

  • The Corporatization of the Business School : Minerva Meets the Market
  • 2017
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • With business schools becoming increasingly market-driven, questionable trends have emerged, such as the conflation of academic and corporate management, and the notion that academics and students are market players, who respond rationally to market signals.Using individual studies from leading scholars in a variety of disciplines and countries, this book identifies the global pressures behind these trends. It focuses on the debates surrounded the commercialization of business schools, and the rise of different methods of measuring their success. In their unique approach, the authors and editors discuss the impact of the confrontation between the timeless values embodied by Minerva, the Roman goddess of Wisdom, and the hard realities of competition and corporatization in modern society.

  • Organising grassroots initiatives for a more inclusive governance: constructing the city from below
  • 2019
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The project examines how grassroots organizations and networks providing urban critical services in informal settlements contribute to improve the quality of life of urban dwellers and to more inclusive forms of urban governance, constructing the city from below. The project is informed by the study of Kisumu’s informal settlements’ Resident Associations, the Water Delegated Management Model, and the Kisumu Waste Actors Network. The study adopted an action-research approach with researchers working with citizens, politicians, officers and entrepreneurs in all stages of the research process and used a combination of methods including document studies, ethnographic and participatory observations, visual ethnography, interviews, focus groups, social media analysis and stakeholder work- shops as well as participatory videotaping. The study discusses a) the institutionalization of grassroots organizations for the delivery of critical infrastructure and services and their need to gain, regain and maintain legitimacy; b) their flexible and nested structure facili- tating their resilience; c) their embeddedness in the communities’ knowledge and assets, and their role as social and institutional entrepreneurs to bridge informal settlements with city governance; d) the redefinition of the roles of the citizen, from passive into active agents, and its transformation into more autonomous and insurgent citizens; e) the blending of civic and material rationales and the construction of more fluid identities allowing citizens to draw pragmatically from a broader repertoire of roles and resources; f) and the creation of grassroots organizations as a collective process that emerge from different directions, with the ability to become gateways but also gatekeepers, or the top of the grass at their communities. It concludes with recommendations to informal settlements’ resident grass- roots organizations, public officers, NGOs, politicians, researchers and citizens in general, engaged in constructing a more inclusive city governance from below.

  • Purchasing Power and Purchasing Strategies - Insights From the Humanitarian Sector
  • 2014
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this dissertation, we discuss how buyers practice purchasing strategies in an asymmetric power situation favoring suppliers, and how their purchasing strategies practiced impact their purchasing power and buyer-supplier relationships. Organizations enter exchange relationships to access required resources not produced internally, and are exposed to uncertainty from not being able to fully control or predict flow of resources. Consequently they become dependent on their partners. Their level of dependence indicates the influence, or leverage they might have on the partner. Thus, firms that are highly dependent on their supplier base have less leverage or lower purchasing power. This situation can be seen in several industries; e.g. in the airline industry, in purchase of oil/gas, in monopoly supply markets, or in several purchases made by humanitarian organizations. There are several forms of purchasing strategy practiced in such situations of low purchasing power. In an exploratory pre-study of vaccine procurement in the humanitarian sector, we observed that some weaker buyers had managed to influence their supply market for better purchase terms. Considering the predictions of previous research on constraint absorption of powerful partners, this influence was surprising. In general, the focus of research has been mostly on the stronger partner in an exchange relationship, and thus less is known about the weaker partners. Thus, in this dissertation, we set to understand the purchasing strategies practiced by weaker buyers, to understand how they can have more influence on their supply than perceived. To do so, first the interrelation between purchasing power and purchasing strategies was conceptualized, based on the study of multiple buyers of vaccines for developing countries. Observations from the same multiple case study were also used to explain how purchasing strategies practiced by weaker partners can impact the buyer’s purchasing power. The predictions from this study were extended to a single case study where the impact of one specific purchasing strategy (cooperative purchasing) found from the multiple case study, was studies on the buyers’ purchasing power. This dissertation adds to previous literature, by introducing a more complete understanding of ‘‘purchasing power’’ and its elements, by increasing the understanding of purchasing strategies by less-powerful buyers and their consequence, and by increasing the understanding of purchasing strategies and operations in the humanitarian sector.

  • Exploring and experiencing the corporate business school
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: The Corporatization of the Business School: Minerva Meets the Market. - Abingdon, Oxon ; New York, NY : Routledge, 2017. : Routledge. - 9781315640594 - 9781317277484 - 9781138191143 ; , s. 1-19
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book addresses the real life consequences of the corporatization of universities in general and business schools in particular, and challenge the dominant paradigm which is forcing universities and business schools to 'speak' as a corporate player in a global market where esteem, student revenue, funding and spin-offs are the goods that are traded. It explores the historical evolution of the branding/competition paradigm for contemporary universities, tracing its origins to the land grant universities in the US and later transmitted into global contexts. The book examines the audit culture which has developed in business schools. It investigates the implications of neo-liberal reforms and New Public Management policies on academic freedom. The book also explores the commodification of the 'student', as articulated in a university advertising campaign.
