  • Bureaucrats or Markets in Innovation Policy? – a critique of the entrepreneurial state
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Review of Austrian Economics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0889-3047 .- 1573-7128. ; 34:1, s. 81-95
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper takes stock of recent suggestions that the state apparatus is a central and underappreciated actor in the generation, diffusion and exploitation of innovations enhancing growth and social welfare. We contrast such a view of “the entrepreneurial state” with theories and empirical evidence of the microeconomic processes of innovation in the modern economy which focus on well-functioning markets, free entry and competition among firms, and independent entrepreneurship as central mechanisms in the creation and dissemination of innovations. In doing so, we identify several deficiencies in the notion of an entrepreneurial state by showing that (i) there is weak empirical support in the many hundreds empirical studies and related meta analyses evaluating the effectiveness of active industrial and innovative policies, that (ii) these policies do not take account of the presence of information and incentive problems which together explain why attempts to address purported market failures often result in policy failures, and that (iii) the exclusive focus on knowledge creation through R&D and different forms of firm subsidies ignores the equally important mechanisms of knowledge dissemination and creation through commercial exploitation in markets. We discuss how a more theoretically well-founded focus on the state as investing in knowledge generation and securing the conditions of free and competitive markets will lead to a more innovative economy.

  • An Italian business case for an eHealth platform to provide remote monitoring and coaching services for elderly with mild cognitive impairment and mild dementia
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: ICT4AWE 2019 - Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies for Ageing Well and e-Health. - : SciTePress. - 9789897583681 ; , s. 28-37
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this study was to define a business case for an eHealth platform to provide remote monitoring and coaching services for elderly with mild cognitive impairment and mild dementia in the Italian context. 107 patients with mild cognitive impairment and mild dementia were divided into the intervention and control groups. The data was collected using standardized instruments Clinical Dementia Rating Scale (CDR) and EuroQoL-5D-5L, and tailor-made instruments, such as surveys to technology and healthcare providers, and semi-structured interviews to patients and healthcare professionals. The data that was not collected in the study, was obtained from the scientific literature. Benefit/cost ratio was calculated for three years. The study shows that a digital platform to provide remote monitoring and coaching services for elderly with mild cognitive impairment and mild dementia can be cost-effective from the first year, and can improve care without monetary loss for the healthcare provider. The key benefits show that the deterioration of the illness is postponed, and that the satisfaction of the patients and the healthcare professionals increases. Therefore, such an eHealth platform can be a worthy investment in Italy, and could be considered for wider nation-wide adoption.

  • The sharing economy in social media : Analyzing tensions between market and non-market logics
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Technological forecasting & social change. - : Elsevier. - 0040-1625 .- 1873-5509. ; 125, s. 58-65
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How is the sharing economy framed and who are the main actors driving current developments? Utilizing Social Media Analytics (SMA) for institutional analysis, we track the formation of the sharing economy in Sweden, its actors and their impact. Our findings reveal that the sharing economy in Sweden currently encompasses a wide variety of both non-market and market practices. Discussions concerning commercial exchanges, the role of profit-driven firms such as Uber and Airbnb, and the emergence of a market logic has created a state of instability. Our results point at several unresolved issues, such as taxation and regulation. Based on these findings, we suggest an expanded definition of the sharing economy which incorporates both market and non-market logics. © 2017 The Authors.

  • Enhancing theorizing in purchasing and supply management through middle-range theories
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Handbook of theories for purchasing, supply chain and management research. - Cheltenham : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 9781839104497 - 9781839104503 ; , s. 80-93
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • With this chapter we present middle-range theory (MRT) as a promising way of both specifying what theory is in the context of purchasing and supply management (PSM), and how these theories come about, that is, theorizing. MRT derives from specific practical problems and pertains to a local setting but can, due to its modifiable feature, be transferred to other industrial sectors than the one being investigated.

  • What is the “Potential” of new ICT and how are Perceptions Shaped by Experience of Use and Practice? - The Case of Building Information Modelling
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: The 27th Australasian Conference on Information Systems. - 9781741282672
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The emergence of new open ended ICT (Information and communication Technology). is often accompanied by optimistic predictions about the technologies inherent capabilities, or “potential”, to solve a wide array organizational related problems. In the building and construction industry, BIM – Building Information Modelling – is such an example. However, unrealistic expectations about a technology is also a determinant for failed implementations, but at the same time ICT-induced transformation of organizations and industries is a well-known phenomenon. This research in progress paper has two interlinked explorative aims. First, how can the “potential” of a technology be captured? Second, how does experience of practice and experience of technology use shape the perceived potential of a technology. The data is collected via a survey to practitioners, with and without BIM-experiences, in medium sized contractor companies, and last year’s bachelor students in civil engineering. The total number of respondents was 205. In order to achieve the first aim, it is needed to inquire how users and prospective users’ perception of a technology’s “potential” can be captured? It can be claimed that constructs used when adoption of open ended ICT is studied, implicitly or explicitly, emphasize a status quo, then a transformation of organizational processes and structures. The results show that one alternative for measuring perceived “potential” is to measure respondents’ perceptions about how useful different applications are in practice. However, this scale needs to be developed in order to become more applicable different industries. Based on the measurement of perceived “potential” the results indicate that experience of practice had a negative impact on the perceived “potential”, whereas experience of technology had a positive impact compared to respondents with experience of practice but no experience of technology. It is concluded that further research is needed on which factors these shape the perceived potential when experienced technology user also gain an increased experience of practice.

  • Comparing coverage of disruptive change in social and traditional media : Evidence from the sharing economy
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Technological forecasting & social change. - : Elsevier. - 0040-1625 .- 1873-5509. ; 129, s. 339-344
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How do social media differ from traditional media in their coverage of disruptive technological change? We explore how two entrants transforming the personal transportation and accommodation sectors are covered in social and traditional media. Using content analysis, we conclude that these two forms of media differ substantially. Traditional media is focused on how the two entrants affect society and their respective sectors at large, whilst social media instead function as accelerators for the entrants as they receive predominantly positive coverage. Therefore, our findings suggest that the rise of social media may accelerate the growth of disruptive innovations which can, in turn, reduce the window for response.

  • Employee flexibility in operations in the era of digitalisation: Implications for social sustainability
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: 4th International EurOMA Sustainable Operations and Supply Chain Forum: The Challenge of sustainable innovation: the role of OM and SCM.. - : International Annual EurOMA Conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper provides a perspective on why employee flexibility is critical to manufacturing in the changing industrial landscape, how this links to efforts of digitalisation and automation in operations, and what opportunities and constraints this may have for achieving social sustainability. First, employee flexibility should be regarded at both horisontal and vertical dimensions. Second, responding to digitalisation of manufacturing requires both horisontal and vertical type of employee flexibility. Third, digitalization should relate more firmly employee flexibility, and too even greater extent to social sustainability. Employee flexibility can bridge the gap between digitalisation and social responsibility.

  • Engaged Scholar(ship) in purchasing and supply management (PSM): Creative tension or squeezed in the middle?
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Purchasing and Supply Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 1478-4092 .- 1873-6505. ; 25:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purchasing and supply management research influences practice through the advancement of knowledge and theoretical principles and is positioned as an academic discipline. For the individual researcher, it calls for skills and experience that can be associated with engaged scholarship. This paper explores tensions inherent in engaged scholarship, that arise during the quest to interact closely with professionals to ensure relevance and impact while living up to research quality criteria. The paper concludes that the individual researcher in a field such as PSM is easily left with guidelines that point in multiple directions regarding personal achievement and institutional merits.

  • A systematic review of empirical studies on green manufacturing: eight propositions and a research framework for digitalized sustainable manufacturing
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Production and Manufacturing Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2169-3277. ; 10:1, s. 727-759
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Manufacturers are facing increasing pressures to adapt their operations to meet sustainability goals. Research and developments on industrial digitalization (aka Industry 4.0) present new opportunities to create and capture value in ever-more complex and connected industrial systems. However, digitalization does not always align with sustainability, and case studies combining these two topics are still scarce. To address these gaps, we adopted a bottom-up approach to (1) identify existing environmental solutions and their implementation challenges by reviewing 208 empirical studies, and (2) formulate eight propositions to guide further work so that digitalization supports environmental improvements more systematically. Finally, a framework for Digitalized Sustainable Manufacturing consisting of four research themes is proposed, pointing to future research needed to align industrial development with sustainable development goals. The propositions and framework aim to structure and focus future research by targeting specifically the challenges encountered when implementing environmental solutions in manufacturing.

  • Blueprinting construction logistics services for quality improvement
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Construction Management and Economics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1466-433X .- 0144-6193. ; 41:1, s. 60-78
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Construction logistics services can, if implemented with high quality, positively impact both efficiency and sustainability of construction projects. However, present quality management frameworks have not been developed for temporary multi-actor contexts, such as construction, which is largely lacking industrialised processes. Still, construction logistics service providers provide service offerings to temporary settings and could thus benefit from a service quality perspective. Applying this perspective, this study supports the quality improvement of construction logistics services by using a service modularity approach to identify the services to prioritise for improvement. Building on interviews, concept mapping, and a service blueprint of a construction logistics setup, a priority matrix for improvements is developed. The first step in using this matrix is to operationalise the construction logistics setup in modules based on blueprinting. Second, the matrix evaluates the modules against nine empirically derived improvement enablers such as practices and forums for learning, and data measurements enabling the comparison and followup of construction logistics services. In conclusion, the priority matrix helps focus the improvements on modules with high likelihood of successful improvements. Improvements that can become sustained over time through the reuse of standardised modules in upcoming projects.
