  • Ramifications for Western Firms of Navigating Through Innovation Spaces in Asia
  • 2015
  • In: McKelvey, M. and Bagchi-Sen, S. (2015). Innovation Spaces in Asia: Entrepreneurs, Multinational Enterprises and Policy. - Cheltenham, U.K. : Edward Elgar Publishers. - 9781783475674 ; , s. 333-353
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This chapter draws upon a line of research to propose a conceptualization of innovation spaces, and focuses upon the implications for Asia. The main perspective taken in this chapter – and most of the book – is the firm perspective, requiring micro-data and a deep understanding set in a context, and this can be analyzed both through case studies and through quantitative data of macro trends and later, econometric techniques to test hypotheses.

  • Public Policy Implications of Knowledge Intensive Entrepreneurship
  • 2015
  • In: Malerba, F.; Caloghirou, Y.; McKelvey, M. and Radosevic, S. (2015). The Dynamics of Knowledge Intensive Entrepreneurship: Business strategy and public policy. - 9781138025288 ; , s. 427-439
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This chapter addresses the public policy implications of knowledge intensive entrepreneurship. Given the difficulties of promoting growth in Europe, the sphere of public policy instruments and goals is particularly important to explain and develop, relative to the findings of this major research project AEGIS, which was financed under Framework programme 7.

  • Understanding Innovation Spaces through Emerging Multinational Enterprises in China: An Explorative Case Study of a Chinese Wind Turbine Manufacture
  • 2015
  • In: McKelvey, M. and Bagchi-Sen, S. (2015). Innovation Spaces in Asia: Entrepreneurs, Multinational Enterprises and Policy. - Cheltenham, U.K. : Edward Elgar Publishers. - 9781783475674 ; , s. 103-123
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This chapter firstly provides a theoretical framing to explicitly relate the entrepreneur (individual) with the venture (company) to the national innovation system in China. The proposed framework defines an innovation space as a multifaceted organism not restricted geographically; but rather seen as consisting of multiple levels, including institutional, organisational and geographical aspects. This chapter also provides empirical insights of this journey from entrepreneurial venture to multinational enterprise, by focusing upon the process of expansion and internationalization of research and development of the Chinese wind turbine manufacturer. In doing so, the chapter provides a thick case description, with many details about the development of this Chinese company in the renewable energy industry. Right from its establishment in 2006, the company has been emphasizing the importance of innovation for its activities.

  • Comparing industrial symbiosis in Europe : towards a conceptual framework and research methodology
  • 2015
  • In: International perspectives on industrial ecology. - Cheltenham : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 9781781003565 - 9781781003572 ; , s. 69-88
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Industrial symbiosis (IS) continues to raise the interest of researchers and practitioners alike. Individual and haphazard attempts to increase linkages among co-located firms have been complemented by concerted efforts to stimulate the development of industrial regions with intensified resource exchanges that reduce environmental impact. Additionally, there are examples of both spontaneous and facilitated linkages between two or more firms involving flows of materials/energy waste. A striking feature of IS activities is that they are found across diverse social contexts and vary considerably in form (Lombardi et al., 2012); there are substantial differences in the ways in which IS manifests itself. Equally diverse are the activities of policy makers to stimulate such linkages. Such diversity can already be found within Europe, as became apparent in a first meeting among some of the present authors in 2009 (Isenmann and Chernykh, 2009). Researchers present there decided to create a network of European researchers on IS, with the explicit aim to develop a comparative analysis. We can thus provide insight to the relationship between the style of IS and its context and thereby the potential for policy makers in different contexts to learn from each other. Policy learning can be a tempting route to IS, but is fraught with difficulties if the influence of context is not appreciated (e.g., Wang et al., Chapter 6, this volume).

  • Kryptovalutor – energiförbrukning och miljöeffekter
  • 2023
  • In: En samhällsvetenskaplig introduktion till bitcoin och kryptovalutor.
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Being branded by the business school
  • 2017
  • In: The Corporatization of the Business School: Minerva Meets the Market. - Abingdon, Oxon ; New York, NY : Routledge, 2017. : Routledge. - 9781315640594 - 9781317277484 - 9781138191143 ; , s. 128-145
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This chapter focuses on the relatively neglected domain of branding and the academic labour process, in particular in business schools. It is increasingly accepted that brands are not only marketing tools, they also potentially instruct and direct organizational members. In other words, branding is a means by which managers or leaders can exert control in the labour process through targeting employee subjectivities. Employer branding entails the alignment of employees, typically in service occupations, with how they profile themselves outwards to customers. Successful image management and branding tends to interact with identity. Kärreman and Rylander argues that branding activities can more fruitfully be seen as the management of meaning rather than as benign marketing tools. Professional labour in academia is both simultaneously consuming the brand and producing it. Accordingly, much of the performance of academic labour can be understood as branding work, that is, doing things to market the business school or university brand to an external audience.
