  • The influence of initial business models on early business performance – a study of 589 new high-tech firm
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Innovation Management. - 1363-9196. ; 25:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The initial business model of start-ups affects the performance and development of new ventures. Therefore, new technology-based firms (NTBFs) must choose a suitable initial business model to survive, perform, and grow. We propose a measurement framework comprising of nine elements described using 16 variables for NTBFs' initial business models. We test our framework by surveying 589 young manufacturing and knowledge-intensive high-tech firms established in 2013 in Sweden, Finland, and France. We identify differences between the business models across countries and measure sales growth during 2014-2016. We find significant differences between high-tech manufacturing firms and high-tech knowledge-intensive firms regarding key partners, activities, and resources, as well as value propositions and the ranking of elements. In the second part of the analysis, we apply correlation and regression tests for the nine elements regarding early business performance (sales growth) for the manufacturing and knowledge-intensive high-tech firms.

  • Developing a knowledge ecosystem for large-scale research infrastructure: Important challenges for MAX IV and European Spallation Source
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Technology Transfer. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0892-9912 .- 1573-7047. ; 48:441, s. 467-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Large-scale research infrastructures (RIs), such as MAX IV and European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, are considered critical for advancing science and addressing social challenges. These research facilities are central to research, innovation, and education; they play a key role in promoting and disseminating knowledge and technology. In this study, we develop a conceptual framework of a knowledge ecosystem for large-scale RIs. The study is explorative, with data obtained from 13 interviews with key informants from different stakeholders in academia, industry, and policy. More data were obtained from reports from national agencies that develop and operate research facilities and from industrial and regional governmental reports, internal reports, newsletters, and information from the facilities’ websites. We find that academia, industry, and policy, together with four themes, have an effect on the value proposition of these facilities, on geographical distances (nodes), catalysts, platforms, and hubs. Therefore, they will affect the structure and design of a knowledge ecosystem. Our framework explains knowledge ecosystem structure and design.

  • New technology-based firms and their survival: The importance of business networks, and entrepreneurial business behaviour and competition
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Local Economy. - : SAGE Publications. - 0269-0942 .- 1470-9325. ; 31:3, s. 393-409
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This longitudinal study identifies two core business dimensions important for New Technology-Based Firm (NTBF) survival. These business dimensions are business networks, and entrepreneurial business behaviour and competition. Data was collected from 131 small high-technology firms located in incubators initially in 2005, when most were almost three years old, and again in 2014. A factor analysis was conducted using 17 variables, and a correlation analysis was then performed. Four control variables were also included in the analysis to separate the performance that was due to the firm and the performance that was due to the incubators. Further, three latent variables were developed from the two business dimensions. The findings from this study confirm the importance of business networks and explain how the behaviour and competition of NTBFs during their initial three years may impact firm survival. The latent variables of business and patent advice also had a significant relationship with firm survival.

  • Novelty-oriented value propositions for new technology-based firms: Impact of business networks and growth orientation
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Technology Management Research. - : Elsevier BV. - 1047-8310. ; 29:2, s. 161-171
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • To perform, new technology-based firms (NTBFs) need to develop value for customers that distinguish them from others in the market. Therefore, the development of novelty-oriented value propositions are important, and may be influenced by several factors. We argue that the propensity to become more novelty-oriented can be influenced by an internal drive to grow (growth orientation) and by external contributions (business networks). Hence, the purpose of this paper is to analyse how business networks and growth orientation effects on the novelty orientation of NTBF value propositions. Based on survey data from 401 NTBFs founded between 2013 and 2015, in the nascent start-up phase novelty-oriented value propositions of NTBFs positively relate to informal (management) networks, as well as founders' attitudes towards growth. Thus, such networks and attitudes from founders should be supported in the very early phases of start-up if novelty orientation is to be preferred as a performance determinant.

  • Business planning, product development and localization - a study of 131 incubatees located on 16 incubators in Sweden
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Do We Need The Entrepreneurial University? Triple Helix Perspective. - 9789536025589 ; , s. 47-61
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The research question in this study specifically relates to the potential for performance associated with business plans and market development (as it affects the firm), product development (firm dimension) and localization (incubator dimension). The developed analytical model examines the effects of these different dimensions on small firm performance (as seen via capital resources, profit margin and level of sales). This study builds upon data collected from a survey in 2005 of 16 incubators in Sweden. The survey was sent out to the managers of the new technology-based firms (incubatees). Thus, out of the 133 answers (response rate 69%) we were able to use 131 small new technology-based firms localized at 16 incubators in the statistical analysis. Moreover, from a firm’s perspective the incubator provides an opportunity of gaining access to such as technology together with the creation of those systems important for running its business activities and improving performance. Factor analysis was used to divide the variables into the five latent variables: business plans and prognoses, product development, region and proximity, university and incubator linkage, and transportation and facilities. However, we found a very limited number of connections between firm performance (capital resources, profit margin and level of sales) and these 5 selected variables. Regarding the financing situation, we note that the only statistical connection occurs between the financial resources over the past three years and the [latent variable] business plans and prognoses. There was no overall statistical support for connections between sales level, profit margin and the five latent variables.

  • Support and development of small and new firms in rural areas : a case study of three regional initiatives
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: SN Applied Sciences. - : Springer. - 2523-3963 .- 2523-3971. ; 2:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper is based on qualitative analysis and addresses the important topic of small business entrepreneurialism in rural areas and its special conditions and needs. Our aim is to present examples of and suggestions for how to encourage firm start-ups and the continuation possibly also the development and growth of existing firms. The paper is based on three cases that illustrate (1) challenges in the support system in rural areas, (2) various forms of support that could be used in rural areas, and (3) expectations that are eligible to put upon support activities designed for rural areas. The main findings are that (1) that successful support of rural businesses requires a critical mass of regional entrepreneurs, firms, and support actors, (2) diversity is critical, and the various actors must be coordinated to carry out the desired measures effectively, (3) expectations for growth and orientation of the firms must be realistic because broad support is more important than targeted support, and (4) we were able to show that a cross-boundary collaborative work culture that avoids both thought silos and business silos and places no value on prestige should pervade all areas of business support.

  • Science parks as key players in entrepreneurial ecosystems
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: R and D Management. - Chichester, United Kingdom : Wiley. - 0033-6807 .- 1467-9310. ; 53:4, s. 603-619
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores the crucial role of modern science parks in the creation, development, and management of entrepreneurial ecosystems. Thus, it has developed a conceptual framework for analysing the role that science parks could have in developing an entrepreneurial ecosystem. We interviewed several stakeholders in the entrepreneurial ecosystem oriented towards sustainable production. The study design comprises three levels of analysis: 27 nodes, 7 themes, and 3 aggregate dimensions. While a science park can play a key role in creating, developing, and managing an entrepreneurial ecosystem, we find that its success largely depends on the level of cooperation among the key stakeholders. This study provides new insights into (i) how we can better comprehend the emergence of linkages to develop entrepreneurial ecosystems and (ii) how science park managers and regional policymakers can better examine the role of key stakeholders in envisioning, configuring, and enabling regional entrepreneurial ecosystems. When studying science parks, it is important to use a holistic approach, focusing on the key players in the entrepreneurial ecosystem - science parks and their stakeholders - and knowing how and when to intervene.

  • Empirical exploration of a cohort of new technology-based firms in Sweden: what happens to them during their early years?
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: The Dynamics of Entrepreneurial Contexts: Frontiers in European Entrepreneurship Research. - : Edward Elgar Publishing. ; , s. 166-186
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This chapter contributes to the current understanding of new technologybased firm growth. We find a surprisingly high survival rate (70 per cent) for the 2006 cohort of NTBFs at the end of 2014 and this rate is much higher than those reported in previous studies. Additionally, we find that very few firms experience high-growth during their first seven years (0.6 to 3 per cent from the cohort) and that, among the high-growth firms, employment growth and sales growth are highly correlated. To address the challenges of measuring growth for new and small firms, we show the potential usefulness of the kink-point approach. Researchers can use this approach to capture much of the growth excluded in other measures, for example, the OECD measure.

  • Capabilities for innovation in small firms - A study of 131 high-tech firms and their relation to performance
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Business Innovation and Research. - 1751-0260 .- 1751-0252. ; 6:2, s. 149-176
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Organisational capabilities have been widely discussed - most often at a conceptual level and from a large firm perspective. This paper examines the operationalisation and measurement of the capabilities for innovation in small firms and also how capabilities may be related to the firm's innovation performance. Based on a quantitative analysis of 131 small high-tech firms, this paper describes and analyses the dimensions critical for innovation with a special focus on very small high-tech firms. We propose a construct for investigation including five dimensions relating to small firm capabilities and their relation to innovation performance. We found 20 relationships between the capabilities dimensions and innovation performance, of which the performance dimension of 'patent' showed to be particularly correlated to capabilities. Our statistical analysis shows that two latent constructs have a positive effect on innovation performance: cooperation with universities and business planning and advice.

  • Firm characteristics and internal and external dimensions: Differences between incubatees and non-incubator firms in Sweden
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Handbook of Research on Business and Technology Incubation and Acceleration: A Global Perspective. - : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 9781788974776 ; , s. 496-512
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Chapter 29 examines the differences between incubatees and non-incubator outside firms in terms of business performance along four dimensions: growth orientation, external financing, partnerships, and business networks. This study uses data from a 2016 survey covering 401 Swedish NTBFs, of which 38 firms were in incubators (incubatees) and 363 firms were not (non-incubator outside firms). The differences in these dimensions can be an important factor for firms’ future business performance. An underlying assumption and the rationale is that new technology-based firms (NTBFs) in incubators regard these dimensions, more important than do NTBFs off incubators. Results on all four dimensions are supported because incubatees regard them as more important than do non-incubator firms.
