  • Sustainable Operations Management: Key Practices and Cases
  • 2023
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Sustainable Operations Management applies the issues of sustainability to all strategic decisions of operations: capacity management, supply network, process technology, and development and organisation. This book extends the existing literature of operations management that for years has been paramount in creating economic value with little consideration of environment and social dimensions. Whilst based on robust theoretical frameworks, some developed by its own authors, the book is enriched by international case studies and real-world illustrations throughout, to demonstrate how this theory translates to practice. Each chapter begins with learning objectives and ends with a summary, activity and questions for discussion. Readers will gain a comprehensive and in-depth knowledge on how to manage operations for sustainability. They will learn the ways to formulate a sustainable operations strategy and the elements involved in managing tactical and operational activities to enhance sustainability performance over time. The book covers all aspects of the new business sustainability paradigm from an operations perspective, including sustainable development goals, the circular economy, digital transformation, and organisational structures.

  • Exploring System Dynamics to Manage Technologies for Increasing Sustainability
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Hosni Y (Ed) “Science, Technology and Innovation in the Age of Economic, Political and Security Issues”, Proceedings of 23rd International Conference of the International Association for Management of Technology, IAMOT, Miami FL, USA.. ; , s. paper 1569872089-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses how system dynamics and computer modelling contribute to the debate of management of technologies in response to sustainability crises. The basic components and properties of socio-ecological systems were modelled in order to understand possible responses to resource scarcity or exceeding levels of pollutions in a given system. The computer programme was based on a toy model methodology in accordance to our commitment to simplification and focus on the relationship between ecological resources provision and human consumption and needs. The results show that computer simulation may provide interesting insights on managing the use of ecological resources when attempting to promote increased human wellbeing. The mapping of system dynamics has also proven useful to explore the nature of sustainability challenges and the appropriate responses under the expected feedback loops between the various regimes of a macro socio-ecological system such as technological and consumption regimes.

  • An introduction to product essentiality: conceptualisation and measurement
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Technology Analysis and Strategic Management. - 0953-7325 .- 1465-3990. ; In Press
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Moments of crisis such as pandemics, hyperinflation, or natural disasters cause societies, governments, companies, and individuals to reflect on their priorities and essential needs. However, there is no concept or theory that links human needs to the consumption of goods and services. With this in mind, we introduce the product essentiality concept and a method to measure the essentiality level of a group of products. We used a survey questionnaire and quantitative methodology to illustrate the concept and propose that it can be reasonably approximated by a measure of perceived essentiality. Our analysis examined the influence of location, gender, and family income on the perceived essentiality of general goods and services. For this, a sample of Business and Management students in Brazil and the UK classified 81 products as ‘essential’ or ‘superfluous’. Our findings and analyses show that applying the essentiality concept and its measurement can be consistent and useful for reflecting on what is essential and what is not. This study provides preliminary insights on product portfolio essentiality measurements suggesting it is significantly affected by location rather than gender and income. The results can help organisations to rethink their product portfolios, designs, and assist sustainable development policies.

  • The Main Criteria of Biomass Selection for Energy Generation in Brazil
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of 25th International Conference of the International Association for Management of Technology, IAMOT 2016, Orlando, United States, 15-19 May 2016. - 9780981581781 ; , s. 759-774
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The principal aim of this paper is to examine the criteria assisting in the selection of biomass for energy generation in Brazil. To reach the aim, this paper adopts case study and survey research methods to collect information from four biomass energy case companies and solicits opinions from experts. The data gathered are analysed in line with a wide range of related data, including selection criteria for biomass and its importance, energy policies in Brazil, availability of biomass feedstock in Brazil and its characteristics, as well as status quo of biomass-based energy in Brazil. The findings of the paper demonstrate that there are ten main criteria in biomass selection for energy generation in Brazil. They comprise geographical conditions, availability of biomass feedstock, demand satisfaction, feedstock costs and oil prices, energy content of biomass feedstock, business and economic growth,CO2 emissions of biomass end-products, effects on soil, water and biodiversity, job creation and local community support, as well as conversion technologies. Furthermore, the research also found that these main criteria cannot be grouped on the basis of sustainability criteria, nor ranked by their importance as there is correlation between each criterion such as a cause and effect relationship, as well as some overlapping areas. Consequently, this means thatwhen selecting biomass more comprehensive consideration is advisable.

  • Building a Competitive Advantage through Sustainable Operations Strategy
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Zawislak, P A and Hosni Y (Eds) “Science, Technology and Innovation in the Emerging Markets Economy”, Proceedings of 22nd International Conference of the International Association for Management of Technology. ; , s. Paper 1569690949-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper addresses an important gap in sustainability and technology management studies: the strategies for sustainable operations. Based on analysis of cases from automotive, textile, chemical, and food processing industries, the authors discuss the responses companies take to environmental and social pressures when aiming at increasing profitability. Our findings show that adaptations of traditional operations strategy frameworks can be useful when developing and assessing sustainability strategy for operations. Lastly, we also offer definitions for ‘sustainable operations strategy’ and ‘sustainable technology’ as those are not yet established in the literature. We consider the contribution of this article to be linked to the development and evaluation of sustainable operations strategies, which will invariably include the choice and use of technologies.

  • Green operations strategy of a luxury car manufacturer
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Technology Analysis and Strategic Management. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0953-7325 .- 1465-3990. ; 28:1, s. 24-39
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the strategic environmental decisions of a luxury car manufacturer. Through case study research, the investigation sheds light on why and how the company is adopting green technologies. Being pressured by different stakeholders to become greener, luxury car manufacturers carry significant opportunities for environmental improvement given the nature of their manufacturing processes and products. Because of their low-volume production, manufacturers may be able to increase output and still reduce overall emissions when compared to high-volume manufacturers. In the case study company this was found to be possible only because of new ideas brought by a change in ownership. Luxury manufacturers may also be a test-bed for the development and experimentation of green technologies as part of a strategic approach to environmental initiatives. This paper contributes to the fields of green technology adoption and operations strategy in automotive manufacturing groups.

  • Modelling Sustainability Performance to Achieve Absolute Reductions in Socio-Ecological Systems
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier BV. - 0959-6526. ; 132, s. 32-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As the world’s natural resources dwindle and critical levels of environmental pollution are approached, sustainability becomes a key issue for governments, organisations and individuals. With the consequences of such an issue in mind, this paper introduces a unifying approach to measure the sustainability performance ofsocio-economic systems based on the interplay between two key variables: essentiality of consumption and environmental impact. This measure attributes to every system a ‘fitness’ value i.e. a quantity that reflects its ability to remain resilient/healthy by avoiding ecological, social and economic collapse as it consumes the available resources. This new measure is tested on a system where there is a limited supply of resources and four basic consumption types. The analysis has theoretical implications as well as practical importance as it can help countries, organisations or even individuals, in finding better ways to measure sustainability performance.
