  • Shipping in the EU emissions trading system: implications for mitigation, costs and modal split
  • 2024
  • record:In_t: Climate Policy. - 1752-7457 .- 1469-3062. ; In Press
  • swepub:Mat_article_t (swepub:level_refereed_t)abstract
    • EU recently decided to include shipping, meaning all intra-European shipping and 50% of extra-European voyages, in the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) beginning in 2024. This article provides an early assessment of the impacts of the EU ETS on the shipping sector’s potential reductions in greenhouse gas emissions for different types of ships. It further examines selected mitigation measures and the impact on modals split and costs. The study employs a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative estimates (based on data from the EU monitoring, reporting and verification system) with qualitative data and information from interviews with key actors and from previous literature. This approach aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the impacts of the EU ETS. The inclusion of shipping in the EU ETS is expected to introduce significant incentives to reduce emissions. We estimate that switching to bio-methanol at an emissions allowance price of €90–100/tCO2 will be cost-effective for a minor share of shipping segments (representing about 0.5-5% of all ships), whereas at a price above €150/tCO2 it could be cost-effective for a considerable share (potentially 75%) of ships. In the short term, the costs incurred by the EU ETS will be passed on to transport customers as a surcharge. The increased cost may, unless properly addressed, drive carbon leakage. Meanwhile, a modal shift away from shipping may occur in the roll-on, roll-off (RoRo) and roll-on passenger (RoPax) segments due to direct competition with road and rail transport and the relative ease of shifting to other modes of transport.

    • Trans-ocean liner shipping companies adopt slow steaming during periods when the market is characterised by low demand, high fuel prices, low freight rates and overcapacity. The most recent instance in which this occurred was the period following the 2008/2009 global financial crises, and the speeds have not yet rebounded to the pre-crisis levels. Most of the existing research regarding slow steaming takes environmental, economic and maritime engineering perspectives, meaning that the phenomenon is studied from the viewpoint of ship owners. The purpose of this paper is to explore the effects of slow steaming from the shipper's perspective.

  • record:In_t: The 12th World Conference on Transport Research, Lisbon, 11-15 July 2010.
  • swepub:Mat_conferencepaper_t (swepub:level_scientificother_t)abstract
    • From the perspective of a transport service buyer and at the abstraction level of material flows, all transports travel directly from product supplier to product customer. In reality, how-ever, the directness of transport services depends on factors such as geography, available infrastructure, temporary conditions, shippers’ qualitative preferences, the economy of and practical possibilities for consolidation and access to return flows. This work examines detours by structuring and elaborating upon the causes of freight transport detours and briefly analysing their effect. Detours are divided into supply chain, logistics and freight transport detours respectively and most attention is paid to the last kind of detour. Freight transport detours are divided into physical, political, commercial, operational and non-planned causes for detours. The first two stipulate the system environment in which the focused actors, transport service providers, decide upon detours. Operational causes are subject to internal decision making whereas commercial and non-planned causes are both external and internal to transport service pro-viders. The work is qualitative and is presented as a work-in-progress; therefore, coherent quantitative evidence is still lacking.

  • Spatial patterns of logistics facilities in Gothenburg, Sweden

    • In recent years, the location of logistics facilities, in particular with regard to “logistics sprawl,” has emerged as a topic in the literature that is, a process of spatial decentralisation of logistics facilities in large metropolitan areas. The aim of this paper is to look at logistics sprawl patterns in the Gothenburg metropolitan area, in the south-west of Sweden. Looking at a medium-size monocentric urban region that is also a major port gateway for the country, this study provides novel elements in the study of locational patterns of freight facilities in metropolitan areas. It also provides an opportunity to identify the role of freight in planning, land use and zoning policies. A literature review is carried out on the issues of freight and logistics facilities locational patterns. A quantitative analysis is proposed, using data from Swedish statistics about the number of establishments with a NACE code related to logistics, as well as an original method providing a “cleaned” and more comprehensive dataset. We look at data at two different scales, one metropolitan and one regional, for years 2000 and 2014, as to enable a comparative and diachronical analysis. Logistics sprawl is measured by the average distance of warehouses to their common centre of gravity. Finally, interviews with transport and logistics providers as well as real estate investors and public agencies in the region, add qualitative information on the relative importance of different location factors related to logistics facilities and the issues raised. Logistics sprawl in Gothenburg occurs in specific ways, and differently at the two geographical levels of analysis.

  • Approach for handling heterogeneous goods in intermodal freight networks - revisited
  • 2013
  • record:In_t: 13th World Conference on Transport Research (WCTR), July 15-18, Rio de Janeiro.
  • swepub:Mat_conferencepaper_t (swepub:level_scientificother_t)abstract
    • At the 9th WCTR in Seoul, we outlined six approaches for coping with heterogeneous goods in freight networks and gave common real-world examples of Logistics Service Providers’ actions. This article is a follow-up that re-uses the conceptual framework created in 2001 to develop the theory further and to analyse how the approaches are used in real-world network operations in 2013. We have found indications that European transport of heterogeneous goods has become increasingly complex and certainly more complicated over the studied period, not least of all due to the growth in transport network size and scope. Some of the tricks used by Logistics Service Providers to cope with the heterogeneous goods are de-scribed, characterised, segmented, and analysed to arrive at relatively generalised knowledge. Finally, a case study shows how a Swedish Logistics Service Provider has changed its consolidation network to encompass logistically demanding pharmaceuticals in its general flow.

  • Assessment of the impact of the application of new sulphur limits to the Mediterranean and the Atlantic European Seas
  • 2010
  • swepub:Mat_report_t (swepub:level_scientificother_t)abstract
    • The impact of introducing stricter sulphur limits in the Mediterranean and the Atlantic was modelled using 12 priority corridors operating on these seas. Due to the topography of the Mediterranean coastline and the selection of studied routes, short sea shipping (SSS) was found to be dominant, holding approximately 95% of the market share on the selected routes. This share is an over estimation as rail was not included in this study. The introduction of stricter sulphur limits in 2015 & 2020 will increase SSS costs and hence reduce the SSS market share.

  • CEOs’ understanding of blockchain technology and its adoption in export-oriented companies in West Sweden: a survey
  • 2021
  • record:In_t: Journal of Global Operations and Strategic Sourcing. - 2398-5364.
  • swepub:Mat_article_t (swepub:level_refereed_t)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to study current practices in adopting blockchain technology amongst export companies in West Sweden and to capture their CEOs’ knowledge of and attitudes towards blockchains. Design/methodology/approach – Factors enabling or hindering the adoption of blockchains were identified from a comprehensive literature review and a survey of 72 chief executive officers (CEOs) of exportoriented firms in West Sweden, all with turnovers exceeding e2m, regarding their knowledge of and attitudes towards blockchains. Findings – Blockchain technology is not currently perceived to provide benefits that would outweigh the costs of introducing it into West Sweden’s export firms. Nevertheless, the findings suggest that such technology, though currently too immature to meet today’s industrial requirements, could experience more widespread use if certain key factors (i.e. lower cost, traceability, improved security or trustworthiness and new blockchain-enabled business models) are prioritised. Research limitations/implications – Answered by 72 CEOs, the survey achieved a response rate of 6%, meaning that the findings are only exploratory. Even so, they offer new insights into CEOs’ attitudes towards blockchain technology. Practical implications – The CEOs reported comparatively limited knowledge of and experience with implementing blockchains, the lack of which has hampered their large-scale implementation in multi-actor supply chains. Social implications – Negative sentiment amongst CEOs towards blockchain technology may lower onthe-job satisfaction amongst tech personnel aspiring to develop and implement blockchain applications in their firms. Originality/value – Knowledge of and attitudes towards blockchain technology amongst top-level managers, as well as about factors enabling or hindering its adoption, guide managers in crafting strategies for implementing blockchains in their organisations and maximising the benefits therein. Unlike past studies focussing on technological aspects or views of experts and middle-management, the study was designed to capture the views of CEOs.
