  • Knowledge Strategies for Organization 4.0 – A Workforce Centric Approach
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Advances in Production Management Systems. Towards Smart and Digital Manufacturing. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030579968 - 9783030579975 ; 592 IFIP, s. 31-36
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims at presenting an overview of how the manufacturing industry formulates business transformation and knowledge strategies, to find gaps in Industry 4.0 concepts’ impacts on the workforce. The results indicate that the industry is still focusing on the digital transformation era that was adopted at the end of the 20th century, and how to adopt computing technologies to work more efficiently in existing business processes. The approach of this article is to adopt a methodology of three areas; (a) Human resource processes, (b) Industry 4.0 pillars and (c) Process knowledge, where links between these three generate opportunities to address for further research. © 2020, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

  • Location as a Key Factor to Develop Strategic Resource : A Study of Space, Place and Identity
  • 2016
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Taking into account the increasing urbanization in Europe, young people prefer bigger cities and eventually small towns face the challenge of aging and immigrant populations requiring evermore social services even as tax revenues decrease. It seems a necessity for the regional enterprises/authorities to revise their strategic vision in associated with the raising of awareness among the citizens and socio-economic stakeholders in the long-term strategies/priorities. Structuring a powerful approach toward the concept of attractiveness through a location-based assertiveness will not only be supported by the local public or community initiatives, but also through the resource-based theory to stablish new opportunities of public/private partnership in the locations. The concept community values, combining with the strategic vision of the local authority scenario would idealistically cause the raising of awareness among the citizens and socio-economic stakeholders in the scenario-based implementation of resilient of the long-term strategies/priorities; this path is capable also in a public mobilization for a sustainable collective action to sharing a purpose, a common fate in the sense of the evolution of socio-economic norms which eventually integrates the cultural, social, economic and environmental values with the “location”; this could be the platform for a model that shows location-based growth orientation aspects are in a profound interaction with what we call “place identity”. The main ambition of our paper is to look at location as a structured dynamism to support the diversification strategy of owner-managed local companies through literature-based approach to examine whether location, as a strategic resource, contributes to sustainable competitive advantage for companies. So our study contributes to the discussion of the importance of “location” as a factor for creating strategic resources that can create and/or contribute to the competitive advantage of enterprises mostly based on the regionalization strategies; this will promote the mobilization of local actors to develop the competitiveness and attractiveness of their territory, while stimulating a collaborative approach between the territories to expand their capacities. In the maturity phase the resource-based view developed to be a resource-based theory that must evolve in order to extend the maturity phase. As the resource-based view assumes that resources are heterogeneously distributed among companies, various factors [external and internal] explain how profitability can be created and maintained in the long term. We have applied an interdisciplinary grounded theory method by combining the literature-based data from studies of resource based strategies and urban discussion related to space/location; The evidence from some interviews with company leaders, owners, managers and influential representatives of various community activities and entities also helped us to run an inductive reasoning approach as a hypothetical clarification of the action(s) that recurrently determines the main apprehension of the accomplices in an applicable area.

  • Differentiated Supply Chain Strategy - Building Knowledge through Case Studies
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Fourth International Railway Logistics Seminar. - Kouvola, Finland : Lappeenranta University of Technology. - 9789522146014 ; , s. 5-28, s. 5-28, s. 5-28
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Nowadays companies usually offer a wide range of products and services in various types of non-coherent business environments. It is becoming apparent that traditional ‘one-size-fits-all’ supply chain strategies does not support a wide range of products sold in a diversity of markets. Consequently, it becomes increasingly necessary to employ different manufacturing and delivery strategies concurrently in order to develop a differentiated supply chain strategy. This paper employs a descriptive multiple case study approach to illustrate how two companies has develop a differentiated supply chain strategy. Case study findings reveal that one efficient method to develop a differentiated supply chain strategy is to combine different manufacturing and delivery strategies into various supply chain solutions. By combining relatively few strategies it is possible to develop several differentiated supply chain solutions.

  • The Relationship Between the SPS-Conferences and the Six Industrial Challenge Areas Within Produktion2030
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Sustainable Production through Advanced Manufacturing, Intelligent Automation and Work Integrated Learning. - : IOS Press. - 9781643685106 - 9781643685113 ; 52, s. 490-501
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, the 206 papers published at the Swedish Production Symposium (SPS) conferences in 2018, 2020, and 2022 have been analyzed, primarily focusing their relationship to the six industrial challenges identified by Produktion2030. Based on the analysis, ten in-depth interviews with representatives from the Swedish Production Academy (SPA) and industry have been done. These interviews have reflected on the analysis of the papers from the SPS conferences as well as progress during the years of the SPS conferences. The emergence and implementation of the SPS conferences have a similar time span as the Vinnova program Produktion2030. The analysed papers indicate that the focus and development directions of the two have been similar, but not completely overlapping. The close collaboration between academia and industry in Swedish production research is clearly shown by the papers and indicated through an alignment with the industrial challenges indicated by Produktion2030. Of all the papers, 2/3 clearly state such collaboration, and the interviews indicate that the extent of the collaboration is even more extensive than that. The findings from the analysis also include the distribution of research funders involved, gender distribution among authors, and where they are from. Two findings that stand out are the need to more clearly state funding bodies for the published research and to also state more clearly in the papers how, in what way, and with whom the researchers collaborated.

  • E-procurement beyond the buyer cost perspective
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 22nd NOFOMA Conference. - Kolding : University of Southern Denmark. - 9788792471055 ; , s. 483-498
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The objective of this paper is to provide and argue for a comprehensive view of e-procurement that involves both the buyer and suppliers and that goes beyond looking at mere cost reductions on the buyer side. More specifically, the paper describes benefits and barriers of implementing e-procurement solutions for both buyers and suppliers.Design/methodology/approach: This paper reports on a literature review combined with a case study. The case is a public organization in Sweden, which prepares to implement an e-procurement solution. Interviews were also conducted with a selection of suppliers to the case organization.Findings: In e-procurement literature, drivers and barriers are often viewed only from the perspective of a buying organization. Benefits are mainly cost-related for the buying organization, while barriers often include suppliers. It is proposed that benefits and barriers should include both buyers and suppliers. The literature review and the case study findings form the basis for further investigation into this problem area.Research limitations/implications: This study focuses on a public organization in Sweden. Yet, it could have implications for many public or private organizations considering implementing e-procurement systems.Practical implications: This research suggest that organizations to a greater extent should take the supplier´s side into account when implementing e-procurement solutions.Originality/Value: The study highlights a full cycle view on e-procurement taking both buyer and supplier into account.

  • Challenges of Simulation- ased Optimization in Facility Layout Design of Production Systems
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Advances in Transdisciplinary Engineering. - Amsterdam : IOS Press BV. - 9781614994398 ; , s. 507-512, s. 507-512
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Facility layout design (FLD) is becoming more challenging than ever as manufacturing moves from a traditional emphasis on mass production to an emphasis on mass customization, which requires increased flexibility and adaptability. Of the software tools that support FLD, simulation and optimization are the most powerful - especially when combined in simulation-based optimization (SBO). The aim of this study is to identify the challenges of using SBO in FLD of production systems. To date, the challenges of SBO and FLD have been addressed in separate streams of literature. This paper also presents two novel contributions based on two case studies involving Swedish manufacturers. First, it shows that the challenges of using SBO in FLD identified in the literature are not the most important in industrial environments, where precedence must be given to the challenges of complexity, data noise, and standardization. Second, it shows that the challenges of SBO in FLD are not technological in nature but stem from the increased complexity of the factories required by modern manufacturing companies.

  • Information fusion in maintenance planning
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of Swedish Production Symposium. - Göteborg, Sweden.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Industrial production service organisations, companies maintainingproduction machines and whole processes as well as factories, are in great demand ofproductivity and profitavility improvement. Usually performance in theseorganisations arises from high utilization of personnel, superior engineeringknowledge and purchasing expertise/power. However, small and medium sizedmaintenance service providers mostly differate themselves with two first mentioneditems. In this paper we will propose information fusion cockpit to be used in theSME maintenance organisation to enhance problem solving, demand visibility andresource need estimates – hopefully this will enhance the performance of a caseorganisation. As a key input variable to manage large amount of different customerswe identify incoming calls to trigger information collection from vast number ofdifferent databases – the integration of this incoming “demand” is the first step to betaken in the use of more advanced systems. We also speculate in this paper, howagent based artificial intelligence could be used in order to take full benefit frommore advanced system.

  • Exploring conflicting dynamics in product and production development within industrialized house building
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: SPS2022: Proceedings of the 10th Swedish production symposium. - Amsterdam : IOS Press. - 9781643682686 - 9781643682693 ; , s. 807-818
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The product realisation process is one of several formalized supports for industrial actors to excel in concurrent engineering procedures. To satisfy customers today mass customization is increasingly in need, requiring delicate modular architectures, both in product designs and production. Emerging is also the digitalized co-platforming era of automating the synchronization of product and production platforms. Yet, in all these processes, humans as agents have different roles, objectives, and mental models that governs their decision-making, being the bearer of separate ideas on what to optimize from their end. In product development large sensitivity is given to customer demands and trends to design attractive products, while less attention may be placed on evaluating the increase of variation into the production flows from new products, potentially increasing the workload and complexity of assembly systems, as well as, the subsequent material logistics. In production, much effort is invested to increase standardization, increase the pace, and minimize the manufacturing cost, with the objective to minimize required changes to the current production system. Consequently, it is a hard problem to satisfy all criteria at once, and how to solve it has no clear answer. Therefore, this study has applied qualitative System Dynamics modelling, also often referred to as systems thinking, to investigate how these opposing views were represented at an industrialized house builder. The purpose was to explore and model the perspectives and mental models of two leading roles to model their conflicting objectives. As a result, an overall model of main interactions of product and production development is proposed to support interpreting the findings, visualize the identified conflicting dynamics, and work as a vehicle for analysis.

  • The Role of Consumer Insight in New Product Development and Its Impact on Supply Chain Management : A Swedish Case Study
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Innovative Process Optimization Methods in Logistics. - Berlin : Erich Schmidt Verlag. - 9783503126835 - 350312683X ; , s. 113-126
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper seeks to explore how a profound consumer understanding may influence the early stages of a new product development (NPD) process. The issue is examined through a qualitative single case study combined with a literature review. The case study shows how the NPD process is structured and executed in a Swedish furniture company as well as the role consumer insight plays in that process. Empirical data have been collected mainly from in-depth interviews with persons representing senior and middle management in the case company. The research reveals that consumer oriented, cross-functional NPD in the case company has a strong impact on internal collaboration, and aligns the goals between different departments and functions within the company. Despite inefficiencies on departmental level, effectiveness on company level is achieved. Early indications show an expected growth in contribution margins by 8 percentage.
