  • Predicting Customer Churn in Retailing
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings 21st IEEE International Conference on Machine Learning and Applications ICMLA 2022. - : IEEE. - 9781665462839 - 9781665462846 ; , s. 635-640
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Customer churn is one of the most challenging problems for digital retailers. With significantly higher costs for acquiring new customers than retaining existing ones, knowledge about which customers are likely to churn becomes essential. This paper reports a case study where a data-driven approach to churn prediction is used for predicting churners and gaining insights about the problem domain. The real-world data set used contains approximately 200 000 customers, describing each customer using more than 50 features. In the pre-processing, exploration, modeling and analysis, attributes related to recency, frequency, and monetary concepts are identified and utilized. In addition, correlations and feature importance are used to discover and understand churn indicators. One important finding is that the churn rate highly depends on the number of previous purchases. In the segment consisting of customers with only one previous purchase, more than 75% will churn, i.e., not make another purchase in the coming year. For customers with at least four previous purchases, the corresponding churn rate is around 25%. Further analysis shows that churning customers in general, and as expected, make smaller purchases and visit the online store less often. In the experimentation, three modeling techniques are evaluated, and the results show that, in particular, Gradient Boosting models can predict churners with relatively high accuracy while obtaining a good balance between precision and recall.

  • Improved Decision Support for Product Returns using Probabilistic Prediction
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings 2023 Congress in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, & Applied Computing, CSCE 2023. - : IEEE. - 9798350327601 - 9798350327595 - 9798350327588 ; , s. 1567-1573
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Product returns are not only costly for e-tailers, but the unnecessary transports also impact the environment. Consequently, online retailers have started to formulate policies to reduce the number of returns. Determining when and how to act is, however, a delicate matter, since a too harsh approach may lead to not only the order being cancelled, but also the customer leaving the business. Being able to accurately predict which orders that will lead to a return would be a strong tool, guiding which actions to be taken. This paper addresses the problem of data-driven product return prediction, by conducting a case study using a large real-world data set. The main results are that well-calibrated probabilistic predictors are essential for providing predictions with high precision and reasonable recall. This implies that utilizing calibrated models to predict some instances, while rejecting to predict others can be recommended. In practice, this would make it possible for a decision-maker to only act upon a subset of all predicted returns, where the risk of a return is very high.

  • Predicting returns in men's fashion
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Developments of Artificial Intelligence Technologies In Computation and Robotics. - Singapore : World Scientific. - 9789811223334 - 9789811223341 ; , s. 1506-1513
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While consumers value a free and easy return process, the costs to e-tailers associated with returns are substantial and increasing. Consequently, merchants are now tempted to implement stricter policies, but must balance this against the risk of losing valuable customers. With this in mind, data-driven and algorithmic approaches have been introduced to predict if a certain order is likely to result in a return. In this application paper, a novel approach, combining information about the customer and the order, is suggested and evaluated on a real-world data set from a Swedish e-tailer in men's fashion. The results show that while the predictive accuracy is rather low, a system utilizing the suggested approach could still be useful. Specifically, it is reasonable to assume that an e-tailer would only act on predicted returns where the confidence is very high, e.g., the top 1-5%. For such predictions, the obtained precision is 0.918-0.969, with an acceptable detection rate.

  • Taking industry seriously in ICT research : The case of building and construction industry
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: ICIS 2011 Proceedings. - : Association for Information Systems. - 9780615559070 ; , s. 3904-3919
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Industry has received little attention in Information systems research as a factor explaining information and communication technology (ICT) related activities in organizations. By drawing on a case study in the building and construction industry in Sweden, the aim of this paper is to contribute to an enhanced knowledge of how industry specific features shape the adoption and use of ICT. It is concluded that the adoption and deployment of ICT is shaped by the interplay among three main dimensions of the industry. These dimensions are the market and production environment (shaped by specific interaction patterns among its features), the socio-cognitive environment, and institutional actors. The outcomes of this interplay will “fit” material features of ICT, implying certain ICT applications are preferred in a specific industry. However, the interaction patterns among which features to be included in the framework will vary among industries. The suggested framework can be used as a point of departure when ICTrelated activities in an industry are analysed.

  • Commuting and the Economic Milieu : An Investigation of the Choice to Commute Related to Labor Demand, Worker Competition and Wage
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Regional Development in an International Context. - Trollhättan : University West. - 9789187531170 ; , s. 369-380
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We calculate aggregate economic-milieu variables and use them as explanatory variables to study the Swedish commuting pattern. The variables are of accessibility type (i.e. spatially discounted) and are logarithmic ratios. We start from the assumption of utility maximizing individuals. The probability to commute using a link increases with expected utility. We apply two models: the quantity model and the wage model. The explanatory power is high and the results are as expected. Labor demand is positively related to utility. Worker competition is negatively related to utility. Wage is positively related to utility. A municipality, which isnot a regional center, can strive to increase the number of jobs within the municipality. The second best, for such a municipality, is that jobs are available in the municipality that is the regional center. Otherwise, the municipality and region will economically decline.

  • Modelling International Trade : A study of the EU Common Market and Transport Economies
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Mölle 2008, The Tenth Annual SNEE European Integration Conference. - : SNEE. ; , s. 11 sidor-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, Swedish export is investigated, and data for export value and the number of firms that export is analysed. The main purpose is to compare constrained gravity models to gravity models without constraints. It is shown that constrained gravity models represent the export data in a relatively better way. The EU common market and transport economies are introduced into versions of the constrained gravity model, and the results show that the model fits the data even better.

  • Differentiated Supply Chain Strategy - Building Knowledge through Case Studies
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Fourth International Railway Logistics Seminar. - Kouvola, Finland : Lappeenranta University of Technology. - 9789522146014 ; , s. 5-28, s. 5-28, s. 5-28
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Nowadays companies usually offer a wide range of products and services in various types of non-coherent business environments. It is becoming apparent that traditional ‘one-size-fits-all’ supply chain strategies does not support a wide range of products sold in a diversity of markets. Consequently, it becomes increasingly necessary to employ different manufacturing and delivery strategies concurrently in order to develop a differentiated supply chain strategy. This paper employs a descriptive multiple case study approach to illustrate how two companies has develop a differentiated supply chain strategy. Case study findings reveal that one efficient method to develop a differentiated supply chain strategy is to combine different manufacturing and delivery strategies into various supply chain solutions. By combining relatively few strategies it is possible to develop several differentiated supply chain solutions.

  • E-procurement beyond the buyer cost perspective
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 22nd NOFOMA Conference. - Kolding : University of Southern Denmark. - 9788792471055 ; , s. 483-498
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The objective of this paper is to provide and argue for a comprehensive view of e-procurement that involves both the buyer and suppliers and that goes beyond looking at mere cost reductions on the buyer side. More specifically, the paper describes benefits and barriers of implementing e-procurement solutions for both buyers and suppliers.Design/methodology/approach: This paper reports on a literature review combined with a case study. The case is a public organization in Sweden, which prepares to implement an e-procurement solution. Interviews were also conducted with a selection of suppliers to the case organization.Findings: In e-procurement literature, drivers and barriers are often viewed only from the perspective of a buying organization. Benefits are mainly cost-related for the buying organization, while barriers often include suppliers. It is proposed that benefits and barriers should include both buyers and suppliers. The literature review and the case study findings form the basis for further investigation into this problem area.Research limitations/implications: This study focuses on a public organization in Sweden. Yet, it could have implications for many public or private organizations considering implementing e-procurement systems.Practical implications: This research suggest that organizations to a greater extent should take the supplier´s side into account when implementing e-procurement solutions.Originality/Value: The study highlights a full cycle view on e-procurement taking both buyer and supplier into account.
