  • The liability of politicalness : Legitimacy and legality in piracy-proximate entrepreneurship
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1476-1297 .- 1741-8054. ; 22:4, s. 408-425
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores three entrepreneurial ventures that have evolved in proximity to online piracy. In reviewing the respective cases of Spotify, Skype, and The Pirate Bay, the argument outlines the radically divergent strategies with which the entrepreneurs have sought to legitimise their ventures and underlying technologies. The article concludes that: 1) the context of practices labelled ‘pirate’ are paradigmatic examples of fields in which entrepreneurs must work exceptionally hard to legitimise themselves; 2) in this context, it is crucial that the role of law is analytically isolated from the role of institutionalised legitimacy; 3) success in legitimisation is largely dependent upon the entrepreneur’s ability to demonstrate that the venture is governed by ‘the natural order’ of the economy. It is further argued that piracy-proximate ventures may contribute to the entrepreneurship field, inasmuch as they teeter on the border of being considered too disruptive, and thus suffer from a ‘liability of politicalness’.

  • Fruits of Capitalism, Modernisation of Chilean Agriculture 1950-2000
  • 2004
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The so-called Chilean economic miracle during the 1980s and 1990s connotes not only high-speed economic growth but also a profound structural transformation of the Chilean economy. Most previous research ascribes growth and transformation to the liberalisation of markets and other neo-liberal policy instruments introduced after 1974. Policies, before as well as after 1974, have indeed been important for creating preconditions for growth and transformation. However, in the present study it is argued that by overemphasising the role of polices one may partly disregard the historical process by which capitalist forms of organisation have gained momentum in the productive system as new technologies worked have their way into the agricultural sector. In this study, the dynamics of the transformation of Chilean agriculture are analysed by using the methodological tools offered by the Dahménian theory of Development Blocks. Empirically the study delves into three different sub-sectors (wine, fruit and milk) with the purpose to portray the transformation of both export agriculture and traditional agriculture. The study focused technical renewal as a key part of the modernisation process. The main conclusion of the study is that the modernisation of Chilean agriculture was caused by the transformation pressure emanating from the market. However, the selective institutions that paved the way for the successful entry of capitalism in Chilean agriculture were ironically mainly created under the land reforms during the structuralist and socialist periods of the 1960s and early 1970s.

  • The populist allure of social media activism: Individualized charismatic authority
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Organization. - : SAGE Publications. - 1461-7323 .- 1350-5084. ; 27:3, s. 431-440
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article argues that the type of individualized social media activism that has been conceptualized as ‘connective action’ has affinities to populism, and may have detrimental consequences for democratic procedures and the bureaucratic structures that enable them. We trace the normative allure of individualized digital engagement to the libertarian roots of techno-utopianism and argue that this, in combination with a form of mobilization fueled by digital enthusiasm, has potentially dire democratic and organizational consequences. Digital enthusiasm generated on social media platforms entails self-infatuation, here conceptualized as a form of individualized charismatic authority in the Weberian sense. This individualized form of charismatic authority is fundamentally focused on personalized engagement, and simultaneously interconnected through the technological affordances of social media platforms. If individualized charismatic authority becomes institutionalized as a legitimate and predominant manner of organizing, it may have large-scale implications for societal organizing at large by promoting populism. In sum, we argue that digital enthusiasm not only provides democratic opportunities for protest and contention in civil society, but that the fickleness of the individualized charismatic authority it generates may also put democratic procedures and respect for bureaucratic structures at risk.

  • Small Island Societies, Livelihoods, Challenges and Opportunities duringthe Covid-19 Pandemic in Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: AGER: Journal of Depopulation and Rural Development Studies. - Zaragoza : Universidad de Zaragoza. - 1578-7168 .- 2340-4655. ; :36, s. 131-158
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Covid-19 increased the social and economic vulnerability of island societies. Swedishislands are key tourism destinations but are also home to many island residents. Previous studies have highlighted the impact of Covid-19 on core areas, but our knowledge of its impact on island communities is lacking. We use phenomenology to analyse how communities in small Swedish islands perceive the impact ofCovid-19. We use institutional theory and the concepts of social capital and accessibility in the analysis.Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and focus groups with islanders and representatives of local organizations on sampled islands. Pandemic regulations affected island communities differently.Authorities and shipping companies strove to discourage people from visiting islands. This affected tourismnegatively in some islands, whereas tourism increased in others. Informal institutions established a basis forgood community relations; enabled the mobilization of social capital, especially given action by local agentswho were endorsed by the community. Cooperation was a key to reducing negative impact. Accessibilityincreased on islands with well-developed and expanded IT-infrastructure that enabled holiday homeownersto work from their holiday islands. This helped create a sustained positive economic trend for grocery storesand the construction industry

  • Do gender norms travel within corporations? : The impact of foreign subsidiaries on the home country’s gender wage gap
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Applied Economics Letters. - : Routledge. - 1350-4851 .- 1466-4291. ; 31:17, s. 1661-1665
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this note we study how the share of workers in a corporation located in a high gender wage gap country impacts the wage gap in their home country operations. Our findings support the hypothesis that firms with strong intra-firm linkages to a high gender wage gap country also display a relatively large gender wage gap at home.

  • Collegiality and efficiency in bureaucracy
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Public Policy and Administration. - : Sage Publications. - 0952-0767 .- 1749-4192. ; 38:4, s. 492-511
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article addresses the relation between the design of regulatory agencies and efficiency, arguing that authority concentrated to a single individual outperforms more collegial decision-making when the regulated firms' interests are aligned. The tentative explanation is that concentrated leadership reduces the risk for capture. This argument is developed from an empirical case on the markets for mobile and fixed broadband. In the mobile market, the regulated firms are similarly positioned, whereas in the fixed broadband market, the firms typically have adversarial positions, with an incumbent being challenged by entrants. A statistical analysis of regulatory agencies in 33 European countries lends support to the argument that regulation of mobile broadband benefits from having a single decision-maker whereas a bureaucratic regulation with more collegiality functions as well for the fixed broadband.

  • From Mars to Venus : Alteration of trust and reputation in online shopping
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Innovation and Knowledge. - : Elsevier. - 2530-7614 .- 2444-569X. ; 6:4, s. 197-202
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How customers develop purchase intentions in online shopping has been an area of recent interest. In this study, we ask whether males and females leverage trust into and perceived reputation of online retailers differently in reporting purchase intentions. Drawing on the literature on differences in males and females in online shopping behaviors, we propose that females rely on reputation in developing purchase intentions whereas males rely on perceived trust in developing purchase intentions. In a sample of 727 respondents in Sweden, we find support for the proposed associations. Implications for online retailers are discussed.

  • Evolutionary Selection against Iteratively Weakly Dominated Strategies
  • 2017
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This paper provides sufficient conditions under which convex monotonic evolutionary dynamics (a class of imitative dynamics that includes the replicator dynamic) select against strategies that do not survive iterated elimination of weakly dominated strategies. We apply these conditions to Bertrand duopolies, first-price auctions, finitely repeated Prisoner's Dilemmas, and the p-Beauty Contests. Our conditions also imply evolutionary selection against all iteratively strictly dominated strategies.

  • Typology of practices for managing consumer returns in internet retailing
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Physical Distribution & Logistics Management. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0960-0035 .- 1758-664X. ; 49:7, s. 767-790
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore, describe and categorise practices of managing product returns empirically in internet retailing. Design/methodology/approach: A multiple case study was conducted involving 12 e-commerce firms and 4 logistics service providers. An integrative data collection approach of semi-structured interviews, documentation and observations was used to gain comprehensive managerial and operational descriptions of returns management (RM) processes. Findings: The findings show inconsistent RM processes, with a plethora of practices implemented and organised differently across firms. RM processes are ambiguous; their design is a result of incremental changes over time, lacking strategy and goals. There is a mismatch between how they are described and understood in the literature and how they are actually used. Practices in gatekeeping, avoidance and reverse logistics are defined and categorised. These serve as a typology of practices for managers to (re)consider, along with 15 propositions on how RM is practised. Research limitations/implications: The range of RM practices and the processes reflect a lack of scholarly attention and strategic view. Research is needed to develop clear goals on how the RM process can be better aligned with business strategies. Practical implications: The typology of practices is a benchmark for internet retailers in their design of efficient RM processes. Originality/value: Systematic and empirical research on RM is scarce compared to forward management. The study bridges this gap as one of the first to describe RM practices in depth, define service as a key activity, and identify a mismatch between theory and practice.
